Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Therefore, by their fruits you shall know them. Matthew 7:19 20 IN MEMORIAM Ronald Murray August 26, 1955 — November 17, 1971 We fade and die like flowers that grow in beauty, Like tender grass that soon will disappear; But evermore the Love of God is changeless, Still shown to those who look to Him in fear. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION. 12 STUDENTS. 38 ORGANIZATIONS . 78 ATHLETICS. 106 ACTIVITIES. 132 ADS . 160 SPIRE STAFF Sponsor Mr. VandenHoek Editors Rog Klootwyk Jana Boss Photographers Arlene Stienstra Kathy Van Kuiken Jana Boss Layout Roland Madany Judi Gross Business Managers Bev Warner Pat Kamstra Artist Clndi Porter Literary Kathy Van Kuiken Jeneane Klooster Typists Bev Huizenga Linda Lolkema DEDICATION Dedication is a big word. It includes such things as patience, involvement, interest, and love. We want to dedicate our yearbook to a person who has shown to us these qualities. A person who has shown concern for each of us as individuals, someone who has respected each of us for what we are. A person who could laugh at our jokes, but yet could help us buckle down and work. A person who showed deep dedication to stu¬ dents and hard work, but an even greater dedication to God. For friendship, guidance, help, but most of all dedication, we give this yearbook to you, Mr. VandenHoek. 4 We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the heart joy kindness sympathy understanding forgiveness tolerance love We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the mind plans ideals projects poetry inventions principles purposes dreams ideas We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the Spirit faith vision beauty aspiration prayer peace We give of ourselves when we give the gift of words guidance encouragement inspiration There are different kinds of gifts There are different ways of serving Remember this .. . ■ . the man who plants few seeds will have a small crop; the one who plants many seeds will have a large crop. Each one of us then should give, not with regret or out of a sense of duty, for God loves the one who gives gladly. Our love should not be just words and talk. It must be true love which shows itself in action ... 10 PRINCIPAL MR. BYKER VICE PRINCIPAL — MR. OTTE ASS’T PRINCIPAL IN CHARGE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS — MR. VANDEN BOSCH 15 GUIDANCE The Guidance Office — — a place we could go when we had ques- tions, or needed advice and counseling. a place where we looked through col¬ lege catalogs and wondered about our futures. a place where we thought of and talked about our goals, ambitions, dreams, and purposes. a place where we knew there would be someone who would listen to us. f a place we could rely on for Christian guidance. LADIES AUXILIARY Nineteen seventy two marks the 25th year of service by our ladies auxiliary. Mothers and other inter¬ ested women have offered their time to raise money for janitori¬ al and office timesavers, the new gym floor, Fine Arts, the remodel¬ ing of the auditorium, and other school projects. Through the sale of barbecues, catered dinners, and hostess suppers, Uliana and its students have profited for many years. 19 ART WILLIAM WESTERHOF Art The Art course at Uliana has become more and more popular. Taught by Mr. Westerhof, the students express themselves uniquely through their art work. An opportunity is giv¬ en for the school’s artists to display their work in the library. Judy Templeman receives materials and instructions for her project. SCIENCE ALAN DE LANGE Physics Mechanical Drawing General Science JAMES GROEN General Science Biology As amateur scientists, we were fascinated and per¬ plexed by microscopes, cells, atoms, laws, and theo¬ ries. Through lab experimentation we rediscovered and proved basic laws and formulas, and tried to comprehend the complexities and intricacies of the world and its Creator. Caryl Talen measures out MCI for her lab. 23 Chemistry Geometry RAYMOND GEERDES Sociology Christian Marriage Personal Living SOCIAL STUDIES War, motives, frames of reference, government. We struggled to understand the emergence of world pow¬ ers, the motives for war, the effects of society on man. Our studies of the past were keys to our understanding of the world today. We learned to understand ourselves and our relations to others. 24 Mist Schuringa listens to a student’s opinion. Mr. Harms points out the issues. MATHEMATICS 26 ’’Who ha$ the answer to number 24? Square roots, the ASA theorem, parabolas, and sine waves are part of the maze of math. We scratched our heads and bit our pencils in discouragement over seem¬ ingly unsolvable problems. Our experiences in math trained our minds to think logically. RONALD OOSTING Algebra II Senior Math PHIL VAN NOORD Geometry Algebra II Mr. Van Noord uses a plastic model to explain pyramids. 27 HOWARD COLE English I Speech ENGLISH The Scarlet Letter, Syntax, Macbeth, and descriptive paragraphs stimulated our minds and challenged us to learn the art of expressing ourselves. We tried to parallel experiences learned through stories and poetry to our own experiences. The study of English writ¬ ing and literature gave us an apprecia¬ tion of our language. These are only a few of the questions we grappled with in Bible. We learned to search the Word of God for answers. Again and again, we were impressed by the infinite power and majesty of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 35 FOREIGN LANGUAGES Fraulein Vander Velde tells the class about a German Christmas calendar. WILMA SCHURINGA Spanish I, II, III Wo ist Monika?” and Ole Isabel! Como estas?” introduced us to our studies in for¬ eign languages. In German and Spanish we played the guessing game der, die, Oder das?” and el, la, los, o las?” Our studies in foreign languages were not merely a memo¬ rization of words and rules — we became acquainted with traditions and customs of different cultures. 36 DAVID BUURSMA Choir Director LEONARD ALLMAN Band Director MUSIC Bach, Beethoven, Con¬ certos, Baroque — all these terms have important places in the music classes as the students studied the history and formation of music as we know it today. 37 JAN ALDERDEN LORI AUWERDA BILL BAKKER — who could ask for more? SOPHOMORE TEA MOTHERS — PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE GRADUATION 72 Lord, you have said, I AM THE WAY — not that we shall never be confused. You have said, I AM THE TRUTH — not that we shall have all the answers. And, I AM THE LIFE — not that we shall never die. Teach me to know you here on earth — In its tangled maze of pathways, to know you as THE WAY; In its unanswerable mysteries, to know you as THE TRUTH, In the face of suffering and death to know you as THE LIFE. Thank-you, Lord, for not offering us a method, saying, THIS IS THE WAY. Thank-you for not granting us a set of propositions, saying THIS IS THE TRUTH. Thank-you for not delivering us from being human, saying THIS IS THE LIFE. Thank you, Lord, for saying instead, I AM, and thus giving us yourself. — Elizabeth Elliot SENIOR CREDITS Spire-Spire; Fine Arts Committee FAC; Chess Club-Chess; Mixed Chorus-Mix Aw Banq; German Club-Ger; Ssenisub-Sen; Library-Lib; Drama Club-Dra; Chorus; A Cappella-A Cap Choir; Chorus-Chorus; Concert Band-Con B; Fu Class Officer-CI Of; Sophomore Tea Committee-Soph T Com; Sophomore ture Nurses-Fut Nur; Future Teachers-Fut Teach; Student Council-St. Coun; Tea Chairman-Soph T Chair; National Honor Society-Nat Hon Soc; Share- Student Activity Committee-SAC; Chapel Committee-Chapel Com; TracK-Tr; Share; Forensics-For; Science Fair Winner-Sci Win; Ski Club-Ski; Conserva- Cheerleader-Cheer; Basketball B Ball: Girls’ Class Team Basketball-GCTB; tion-Conser; Ecology Club-ECO; Letterman’s Club-Letter; Pep Band-Pep B; Baseball-Base B; Cross Country-CC; Golf-Golf; Soccer-Soc; Tennis-Ten; Intramurals Board-lntra B; Intramurals-lntra; Christian Service Club-Chr Wrestling-Wrest, Bowling-Bowl; Student Manager of a Sport-St. Man; Stage Ser C; Echo-Echo; Chamber Singers-Cham Sing; Office Help-Office Band-SB; Badmitton-Bad; FAF participant-FAF Part; Jr.-Sr. Banquet Com- Pep Club-Pep C; Drill Team-Drill;Career Committee-Car Com; Science mittee-Jr-Sr. Com; Jr.-Sr. Banquet Chairman-Jr.-Sr. Chair; Awards Banquet- Club-Sci C.
