That is what some thought of it, but to many it was a place where we could go for help in choosing courses, selecting a college, and seeking out our own goals and responsibili¬ ties. Mathematics is a universal language that uses numbers and symbols to solve problems. But even more important than the problems themselves, the students learn to use a logical ap¬ proach to solve any type of problem they encounter in life. lti 4 Mathematics: language of science The thrill of math. Expressing ourselves in the best way possible, saying what we mean, and meaning what we say — communicating. These we accomplish through the English language — our key to communication. Foreign languages open up to students parts of the world that they might never have contact with other¬ wise. In addition to learning the languages of other peoples, students are exposed to different customs and ways of life. Studying different cultures leads to a deeper appreciation of our own heritage and an in¬ creased understanding of the brotherhood of man. Only through repeti¬ tion and drilling can these methods be absorbed quickly and efficiently. Preparing for the business world One of the basic principles of typing is not to look at the keys. Phys. Every Tuesday afternoon a bus¬ load of Share tutors travel to the Urban Center in South Chicago. They work with underprivileged children in first to sixth grade. The tutor’s purposes are to discov¬ er their tutee’s weaknesses and to help them to overcome the problems. Sharing ideas, studying books, play¬ ing games and developing personali¬ ty. SHARE is learning experience for both student and teacher. Workmen raise the 100 ft. radio tower. Two Illiana students, Joe and Howie Zeldenrust, have been able to contact nearly 300 countries with their short wave set, but their old antenna didn’t always have good reception and power. This spring, a 110 foot high steel tower was raised. Many companies donated time and machines to help with the installation of the tower. Broadcasting under the call letters WA9SGP, Joe has talked to people all over the world. One of the most exciting con¬ tacts was made with King Hussein of Jor¬ dan. Joe was able to give information to a midwestem family about their wounded GI son who was recuperating on the island of Guam. Twice a week, he contacts Rev. Steginga, a missionary in Mexico, and enables Rev. Steginga to talk to his par¬ ents by connecting his radio to a telephone. The new tower stretches its arms out to the world. This year’s basketball team finished the season with a disap¬ pointing 4-8 P.S.L. record, 9-17 overall. Major causes for their poor showing were injuries, the most damaging one was a broken ankle suffered by scoring leader Mark Nymeyer. The team rose to the occasion several times, however, with exciting wins over TFS, Luther North, and St. Joseph Seminary. The Vikings also turned in fine performances against Timothy, Walter Lutheran, and Washington, but fell short of victory.
