We cannot progress as well in Christian maturity with poor study hall facilities and a limited library. We ore looking forward to doing a better job with the propx sed facilities. He began teaching at Uliana the year we entered as Freshmen, and has been our chief advisor through these past four years. His Christian influence in the classroom will always be remembered by us. He has rendered immeasurable assistance in helping us plan our Junior All-School Party and in arranging our senior banquet and also directing our senior play. Besides this he has helped straighten out the many details of the senior class trip to Washington and also put in many hours as literary advisor of the SPIRE. From this fund the school meets such expenses as buying athletic equipment and paying for part of each student ' s annual. Page Sixteen ASSEMBIKS Each Friday, in distinction from chapel service, the Seniorettes and Visual Education Club present assemblies. The Seniorettes present various types of entertainment with students and outside talent participating. The Visual Education Club shows different types of films. 1. Visitors lend variety to the program CHicuoiyy PSIC FESTIVAL In February, 1954, the idea was bom that the Chicagolond area should join together to present an annual massed music festival. The first festival took place at Thornton Township High School on November 19, 1954, before an audience of approximately 3,000 people. A band of 75 plus a chorus of 450 students participated in the program. Among the schools pxiriicipating were Uliana, Chicago, and Timothy High Schools, Englewood, Roseland, Evergreen Park, and Lansing Junior High Schools. Page Eighteen [[ m CHom m ByU CD CEBT An annual event that brings Uliana closer to the community. Got to get this polished. ' SENIOR On the afternoon of May 11 the seniors left for the nation ' s Capitol, Washington, D. C. aboard a train from Chicago. They arrived the morning of May 12 and began their sight-seeing tour of this beautiful city. Some of the important points of interest they visited were the White House, Capitol, Smithsonian Institute, and the Mint where they sow money made. It was an opportunity for all to see Congress in action and each student to personally meet his state representative. The most impressive scene was the changing of guards before the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington Cemetery. Following this they visited Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, and took a moonlight cruise on the Potomac River. On the evening of May 13 they boarded the train for home. This trip was planned by Don Boender, Beverly Van Kley, Faye Van Oyen, Jim Molenaor, and Mr. Oppewal, class sponsor. Mr. and Mrs. Oppewal and Mr. and Mrs. Landhuis accompanied the group as chaperones. Page Twenty On April 13 the Juniors presented the annual all school party at Roosevelt School in South Holland. They selected as their theme, ' The Old Frontier . They carried out this theme with a beautiful painting of the West for scenery. Their dress was that of the Old West, the girls with long, old-fashioned dresses, the boys as cowboys. Rich De Vries did a good job as master of ceremonies. With plenty of good food, entertainment, and laughter, a good time was had by all. Watch that waisl-lina, girls! Home on the Range. Belles of the Ball. Howdy, Folks! The Last Round up. . . . In his heart he wanted to leave it all . ULL-SCHIIOl PARTI Page Twenty-one OKAIOlilML The Oralorical contest is held each year to encourage and to develop the art of persuasive and good speaking. Students study a moral and social problem and try to bring out possible solutions to these problems. Winners in the eliminalion contest compete against other schools in the Mid-West Oratorical Contest. ' If ye abide in my word then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. John 8: 31-32. CUAPd Our chapel service is an inspiring moment in our day. It is a program that is completely planned by the students. Outside speakers and teachers ore called upon to speak, but often we have one of our own students. It gives us a chance to express ourselves in our religious beliefs. The chapel service is one of our student projects. Besides our speakers we have sp ecial music almost every day. This talent comes almost completely from our student body. Page Twenty-three Larry Arends as the Yankee ' SENIOR CLASS PlAl The Senior Class play this year was Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur ' s Court , based on Mark Twain ' s novel of the same name. In the play the audience saw that, through the comic situations and the quaint dialogue, such things as superstition, the struggle for power, and the quaint formality of the times were being ridiculed. Through the combination of the comic and the dramatic, this play effectively captured the spirit of Twain ' s belief that people could be laughed out of their follies. SENIIIK RUgUEI The Senior Banquet is undoubtedly one of the most eagerly owaited-for events in the life of a Senior and is intended to be a gala evening of feast and enlerlainmenL This year our banquet was held at Vogel ' s Reslaurant on April 27. The entertainment was presented by certain members of the Senior class and also by the cartoon chalk-artist, Mr. Hendrick¬ son. from Chicago. The excellent program combined with the delicious chicken served to the class certainly made the Seniors wish that they could hove more than one banquet during the school year. Pige Twenty-five IIUI! AHUM AKUIV[$ Finally, after months of waiting, the Annual arrives. The underclassmen flock to the Seniors to get their books autographed. REV RIDDER . . , At the lime ot the Reformation. In Bible we study, not general revelation, but God ' s special revelation. In certain Bible courses we learn lo develop a Christian personality through studying the Bible. Thus we grow in learning how to better reflect the image of God. In the study of doctrine we learn to understand what God is like through the creeds and systems which man has formulated from the Bible. Learning to knov what He is, helps us to understand what we should be. m Page Thirty [NGLISH In English studies there are two divisions in which God ' s general revelation can be seen. In the study of literature, more knowledge and understanding of God can be gained by observing the ideas and actions of the creatures which He had made in His own image. We study the stories and poems of gifted men who help us to see this. When studying grammar, we leom not only the rules of good usage but also the logic and pattern of language itself. This is on evidence of the system which God has put everywhere in the world, and through it we grow in knowledge of Him. No! enjoyment and no! sorrow is our Now, the subject o! this sentence is . . destined end or way. Just as in other subjects or fields of study, so too in the business world, we study the general revelation of God. Just as in mathematics we hove mathematical laws, so in the business field we have economic lows. These laws are reflected in the business principles which we study and the business practices which we learn in such subjects as general business and bookkeeping. umm 1 Lai ' s see where yoar mistake is ' Two heads are always better than one HHTHEHHTICS God gave us minds with which to reason. The field of mathematics is not only to teach us how to use figures and digits, but it also teaches us to reason clearly. It is God ' s will for man to develop his mind as much as possible. If we are to be a more perfect image of God, we must learn to reason. Also the field of mathematics is a system. By studying it we leom more about Gkxl ' s p erfect system of upholding the existence of our universe, and we see that in this subject too, we are studying God ' s general revelation of Himself. Page Thirty-three ' I hope everything goes all right. What a shocking even ! SCIENCES In the sciences we grow to understand the physical world in which we live. By searching the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms, it becomes obvious that God has a definite system that He works out through His general revelation. Seeing the ever¬ lasting, unchanging laws of action always producing the same reactions, we find the unchanging God supporting and upholding the world. Page Thirty-tour Also through the social studies man is enabled to learn more about God by the things that people do. More sp)ecifically, we gain in this kind of knowledge in the fields of history and civil government. The civil laws of our government ore merely reflections of the moral low of God. In history we see the results of Man ' s reactions to this moral low. And so in these ways the social studies help to make our knowledge of God somewhat clearer. Several of these were presenting assemblies, holding pie, barbecue, and hot dog sales, sponsoring Bow Day and Western Day and rendering vesper services. The purpose of all their sales was to raise money for their class treasury and school. Another of their projects was the scrap iron drive to meet the expense of renting films. They sponsor such school activities as Student Activity Day. roller skating parties, and All Games Nite. The Chapel Committee again has had a busy year planning our daily chapel services. The committee consists of volunteer representatives from each of the four classes. They ore divided into four committees, chairman, special music, speakers, and special days. They try to present different types of services with students and outside talent participating. (HAPd tllMUITIEE it Bringing to Uliana students the latest news, reviews, and views is the school newspaper, the Echo. This, the official organ of Uliana, gives its readers the chance to be in the know about all that is going on at Uliana. Thought provoking editorials ore a feature of every issue. Sports column, record reviews, and student contributions from English classes ore also some of the Echo features. It also tries to lend its support to all worthwhile causes. Ano!her job taken on by the paper is to elevate the level of Uliana life by showing the good and not so good parts in the many programs sponsored by or seen by Uliana students. Its prime aim is the elevation and guidance of all of the students. We have tried to pcrjroy Uliana not only as a school where people attend classes but also as an institution which trains its students in the Christian faith. The job. although not always easy, was usually fun. The work started out easily, but the tempo increased to a fast and feverish pace the last few weeks. This year was the first time in Uliana ' s history that the Freshmen had a team. It was under the able coaching of Mr. De Ruiter. For most of the boys it was their first chance to play on an organized team and fu rthermore, for many it was the first time they ever handled a basketball. This fact could easily be seen in the play of the boys at the beginning of the year. This sport ottered many girls a chance for physical exercise and a good time. The girls worked hard at practices under the able tutelage of Mrs. De Ruiter. They are looking forward to an even better season next year. We got a t-e-a-m. ' This was the first time in the history of the Green and White that we had cheerleaders. Practicing hard was their life and never conceding defeat was the mental attitude of this fine group. Their presence at the games was a great morale booster to the students and the team alike. Marlene Vandar Gaast vusiTt BmniiAiL For the first time since Uliana was organized we had a team that was actively engaged in basketball with other high schools. The ' ' green and white even acquired a nickname as other schools do. The title chosen by the students themselves was Qippers. Mr. De Ruiter worked long and hard with the boys in order to fashion a quintet that could carry forth Uliana ' s name. With no gym regularly available, the team was forced to practice at all hours at gyms in the surrounding towns, and out of doors. By the middle of next year it is hoped that this problem will no longer be among us; for the only way to develop a team is by steady, organized practice. We feel that in the coming years, with the already good student support and high morale, that the Clippers will become a team to be feared. This will take some time but if the student support remains as it is now, the result of a great team is inevitable. Coach De Ruiter Long Arms Come in Handy.
