May our whole life reflect the Christian training we have received at Uliana. Through this Spire of ‘52’, we hope that you will also enjoy these experiences at our Christian school as you go through this annual with us. Uliana has 200 students and a faculty of ten. Zealously devoted to his work, no task is too great for him to undertake. The Illiana team is now a member of the Church Basketball League of Lansing. Once a month they have sung over station W.J.O.B. During the holiday season they made an appearance on television and portrayed a Holland Christmas Day Church Service at the Museum o Science and Industry in Chicago. It’s annual concert with the band was rendered in January, and the y participated in the Annual Spring Music Festival at the Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Row 4 S. Holleman, B. All the members have gained experience and knowledge in taking and de¬ veloping photos. SCRIBBLERS Our future Echo Staff members have formed a club to learn the fundamentals of journalism. The sophomore girls have again continued to carry on SEWING the Sewing Club. Their presentations of one-act plays have added variation to our assemblies. In this club the under-classmen are given the opportunity to develop their dramatic talents. Page Thirty-four There were many “firsts” in October; the first skating party of the year. Bow Day was introduced, Rev. Brink spoke at the first program in our vocational guidance series. Our assemblies were made more interesting both by outside talent and student participants. JANUARY 1952 began with inspiring chapel services, the Juniors selecting their class rings, and several senior girls going to neighboring schools to observe teaching methods. APRIL P 9« Forty-two The Easter Vesper Service and Calvin Choir were among the more serious happenings in April, while the idea of Leap Year and preparing for the end of school were among the lighter things. He has de¬ voted much time and effort to im¬ prove the spiritual and educational standards of our school. We as stu¬ dents. sincerely appreciate his wise and kind instruction and guidance. Dear Graduates: Graduation implies congratulations; for the fact that you receive a diploma signifies that you have, though with widely varying degrees of ex¬ cellence, completed the requirements prescribed by your school. All of you no doubt are thrilled by the prospect of graduation, although possibly not for the same reasons. To some of you graduation means the “Open Sesame” to new halls of learning and the opening of avenues to other fields of endeavor. To others it is a joyous occasion because it means release from a formal program of training called school. Now jov in this release is not a discredit, provided it does not mean to you release from further intellectual growth and developing in¬ terests; that would mean stagnation and would be tragic indeed. High school graduation is intimately associated with adolescence, and adolescence is the opening of the door to the possibilities of full mature living. With our congratulations we join our prayer that the instruction and guidance provided here by your teachers may in no small measure help you to attain to an ever-growing, ever-developing maturity that constantly reflects the riches of the Grace of God in Christ Jesus. Their main job consists in managing the finances, hiring the teachers, and regulating the policies of the school. Much of the success of the school can be attributed to the hard work of the board. IN MEMORIAM We the students of Illiana have again been brought to the realization of the very shortness and uncertainty of life. On March 15 word was received that DON VAN TIL was killed on the Korean battlefield. Don, a graduate of Illiana in 1948. is the first of our alumni to give his life for his country. A chapel service was held in memory of Don, in which many of his class¬ mates took part. Eugene Vander Wall, the president of Don’s class, told us of his acquaintance with Don a nd gave us a short history of his life. Audrey Koedyker and Helene Talen sang a duet. Rev. Visser, Don’s pastor, gave the message in which he pointed out to us the challenge which Christ gives - that we be prepared at all times, lor He comes as a thief in the night to call us from this life.
