We want you to imagine, as you look through the following pages, that you are seeing our school through the medium of television. Besides her regular duties as history teacher and librarian, she has further served us in the capacity of faculty advisor for our annual. We wish to thank Miss Schuringa for the valuable aid and time she has given us; we sincerely hope that she may be granted future blessings and happiness at Uliana in her chosen profession. Van Beek: A.B., M.A. twelve TO THE GRADUATES Among the many charges leveled at present-day Americans is the accusation that we are obsessed with the idea of security, and that we are generally more concerned about personal welfare and comfortable retirement than about the contribution (or lack of it) we are making to the pattern of life round-about us. The extent to which this charge is true may be difficult to determine, but that a generation which has seen two world wars and has passed through one of the worst depressions of history should be preoccupied with the problem of security is not surprising. And if we bear in mind the breath-taking rapidity with which one invention or innovation supplants another, we can understand a little of why, as a recent writer put it the world is living with its fingers crossed. That you as graduates are entering a world of confusion and uncertainty, distorted by greed and hatred, sharply divided by conflicting ideologies is a fact so obvious that you have become aware of it long before your high school days were over. The extent to which your teachers at Uliana have during the past four years helped to condition you for the rugged demands such a world will make upon you is a fair test of their success. No one can at present speak with any great degree of certainty as to the success of their labors; your lives will have to make their own testimony. Although a mind well-stocked with information and sharpened on the grindstone of intellectual endeavor is a valuable asset, it must function in a setting of emotional stability and spiritual discipline if it is to realize its maximum usefulness. Only if we have attained a truly Christian perspective can we meet confidently the perplexities of life and the complexities of living. When the pressures of the present and the uncer¬ tainties of the future distress, you will find no surer basis for confident living than the words, I am Jehovah; I change not. As your teachers, we rejoice with you in your youth; your natural optimism and en¬ thusiasm are a great blessing. We humbly pray that we may have been instrumental in forming channels of thought and ambition that will guide the flow of youthful ardor into the broad fields of purposeful Christian living. C. Article I We, the seniors, bequeath to the arrogant juniors a liberal portion of our self control. To the sophomores we bequeath a handbook on How to Win Grades and Influence Teachers. To the freshmen we bequeath a large economy size jar of vanishing cream to remove that green exterior. Article II To Miss Schuringa we leave a long ruler to help her to write straight on me blackboard. To Mr. DeYoung we leave a non-acid-spilling chemistry class. To Miss Huitsing we leave a private secretary to keep her papers in order. To Miss Janssen we leave a class that likes English literature. To Rev. Van Schouwen we leave a complete set of maps. To Mr. Schipper we leave money for all the debts incurred in the past year for typing paper, pencils, rulers, etc. To Mr. Vanden Hoek we leave a big box of chalk so that he may replace all those he breaks. No natural waves? forty-two CLASSES ACTIVITIES Studies and activities fill our day; This includes both work and play. Classes, sports, and chapel too, Each of these we televise for you. forty-three No, it isn ' t a gas attack. It ' s just our future scientists working out a few new formulas under the direction of Mr. C. DeYoung. This i3 one class where talking in class is encouraged. But, of course, we must learn how and when to talk. forty-four Everything in the history of our country from the discovery to the present day is studied in U. S. history. Panel discussions and current events on today ' s problems give variation to the class. Desks cleared ? Everyone ready ? O.K. here we go—30 words a minute. ' Dear Sir: Thank you for your order. ioi+y-tive Everyday at 9:55 the entire student body assembles in the auditorium for a half hour of devotions. Students, teachers, and outside talents are enjoyed. The Student Council planned these inspirational services. Re¬ presentatives from each class have arranged chapel for a week. fcrty-six The Rev. Mr. Greenfield leading devotions with Mr. Zafros, our song leader, and Dorothy Kamstra, the chairman. A junior trio favoring us with special music. forty-seven This is a freshman science class where the student does no experimenting but is given demonstrations. Mr. VandenHoek is here making a cloud in a flask by reducing the air pressure. This is one class where the word homework is unknown. Efficient typists are being trained under the direction of Mr. Schipper. forty-eight Volley ball provides good exercise and enjoyment when the weather permits. Another activity which supplies pleasure and physical educa tion is tumbling. forty-nine The junior class made a great success of their canteen this year. During lunch hour they sold snacks and school supplies. That case of pop was a welcome sight when lunch time rolled around. fifty ORGANIZATIONS Extra curriculars fill our day And keep us busy in every way. Zairos This energetic group of freshmen boys are working hard in preparation for entrance into the band. fifty-four This year our band has made two appearances. The first was a joint concert with the choir and the second at the Museum of Science and Industry on Dutch Day. Out of the entire group quartets and duos have been formed. This is an event which is anticipated by almost everyone. Arranging to have students, teach¬ ers, and outside speakers and talent take part in our daily chapel was also the task of student council. fifty-seven £cA Editor, Gertrude De Maar; Assistant editor, Lois Van Zuidam; Faculty Advisor, Miss G. Huitsing. Journalism has been taken over by the juniors this year with the exception of the editor who is a senior. This club puts out an Echo every three weeks for the interest of fellow students and friends. Before each paper is put out, it must be carefully copyread; { and a dummy must be set up. fifty-eight The Echo has a number of subscribers outside of school. Ah! finished at last. Zafros Do you know who provides those interesting films for assemb¬ lies? Yes, it ' s the Visual Education Club under the direction of Mr. Zafros. They raised money for equipment and films by sponsoring a scrap drive. Schuringa The Seniorettes added sparkle to school activities by selling hot dogs and sponsoring interesting assemblies. Among the high lights were the fashion show, amateur hour, and the Truth or Consequences program. Their social events were the Christmas party and the box social. — SewCaietteA sixty m« The Sophomore Glee Club is the stepping stone to the choir. Although his first love is science, Mr. VandenHoek, founder of the Photography Club, is deeply interested in his hobby—developing pictures. Although equipment is scant and materials expensive, those who work diligently in this project will be well rewarded by the mem¬ ories this hobby produces. We have tried to make this annual better than its predecessors and hope you will enjoy it. cixty-six The typists and literary staff worked together with the assis¬ tance of Miss Janssen. The photography staff, editor, and his assistant played an important part in assembling the pictures. Mr. VandenHoek devoted much of his time and effort to make our annual a success by his photography work. This included both taking and developing the pictures. sixty-seven Could we find a bettor janitor? He keeps our school immaculately clean and is a friendly advisor to all. Hurrah! School ' s out!
