Hashim, Our Foreign Student Our Student Council made it possible for Mohammed Hashim Mekkawi to be the fourth Foreign Exchange Student to attend llion High School. Hashim, as he was known to us came from the maior Saudi port, Jedda, where he worked at the city's ultra modern airport. In Saudi Arabia were his father, mother, seven brothers and a cat. At school this year Hashim con- tended with English Literature, American history, English com- position, Speech, chemistry, alge- bra, and typing. He reported for the Quill in his bi-weekly Mek- kawi's Musings, where he told us much about life in Saudi Arabia and his impressions of America. Many of us soon learned to be- ware of Hashim's photographic abilities. He could often be seen running through the halls, camera in hand, snapping many pictures for the Quill and Mirror, Hashim was also a member of the Student Council and Phi Delta Epsilon Fraternity. Besides photography, Hashim en- joyed American folk music, par- ticularly Peter, Paul and Mary, and Ian and Sylvia. After the first few dances, Hashim began trying all the modern steps and soon be- came as expert as the rest of us. From the first time many of us met him at Barb Wardle's open house last August, Hashim has been a most welcome addition to the Senior Class. We will always remember him for his ever-pre- sent and irresistible smile, his prac- tical jokes and constant use of American slang. 57
