SECTION III CHAMPIO S Ilion Central's hoopers culminated a fantastic season on March 23 when they completed the first undefeated season in Ilion's fifty year history. The Bombers began the season with a four game winning streak after having won Ilion's first Section III basketball championship in late March 1962. They proceeded to mow down all competition by scores ranging from a 51 point victory to a four point victory in two overtimes. in two overtimes. The Gold and Brown proved their supremacy over the Mo- hicans in the second game of the sectionals after easily de- feating Canastota 86-49 in the first. The Bombers smashed Mohawk by the score of 5-1--43 and proceeded to knock off Herkimer 74-4-6 with Doug Bernard, Dave Esford, and co- captains, Jim Willey and Tome Deyle all hitting double figures for the squad. The high-flying Bombers went into the championship play- off at the Utica Memorial Auditorium highly confident after a rousing send off by the student body. Their hopes were shattered, however, in the first half as Ilion trailed Lowville 21-16 at the intermission. Bench strength, experience, and overall ability finally predominated as the Bombers began pulling in the third quarter and finally outscored the pesky Raiders 42-16 in the second half. The final score was 59-39, bringing Ilion's winning streak to 26 consecutive games. 139 P1 ,l A 1 1 3 4 4 .N l
