You did more work on our magazine and card sales than any of the rest of us, and without your help, the sales wouldn't have been the success they were. None of us will ever forget your assistance when it came time for our Spring Prom and Christmas Ball. It is very probable that you made more tissue flowers and yarn dolls than any member of the committees. You TO MRS. DeREUS decorated with as much enthusiasm and excitement as the rest of us. Your cheery smile and ever-available assistance have been invaluable assets to our class. For many reasons we were veryqlucky when you became our advisor. We, of the Class of 1963, hope that you have enjoyed working with us through the fun and difficulty and will not quickly erase us from your memory. You have found a warm spot in the hearts of the members of this class that will remain for a long, long time. an-:ps . 'lliiiiwi' it 'll zag Y idx Li 13' ii! i l il 13 Adv sors TO MR. GEORGE PURPLE Mr. Purple, whom everyone has seen around the school, became superintendent of schools in 1954 after he had taught for many years and had been a supervising principal. Ilion High School students recognize the wisdom of Mr. Purple and his dedication to the task of bettering their educational opportunities. Not only is he interested in academic affairs, but he takes an active part in the total program of the school. His face is a familiar one at many games and athletic activities. The students are proud to have such an able administrator. BOARD OF EDUCATION PRINCIPAL - MR. LEO J. SAMMON Mr. Sammon, once a history teacher, then vice-principal, and now principal, is known and respected by all the students. He has set high standards for them to follow and shows them how to be better citizens now and in the future. His strong voice over the p.a. system and at assemblies com- mands both authority and respect, and still it is recognized as the 7 voice of a friend. VICE PRINCIPAL - MR. JOSEPH WATERS Mr. Waters, who came to Ilion from Herkimer, has proven that he is very much a part of I.H.S. by his administrative creativity and his support of athletic events. Each day he makes the announcements over the p.a. system and carefully supervises the major and minor activities which are a part of normal school life. He keeps in close contact with the students, making good administration-student relationships a reality. 12 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS Mr, David Exley, Mrs. Vivian Wright. TODA 2 S LARGE CLASSES OF SENIORS GRADUATE IN STA TEL2' CAPS AND GOWNS. N - With our freshman frolic over, we advanced somewhat doubtiully into our sophomore year. We elected Tom Deyle, president, Bob Heneka, vice-president, Marilyn Nile, secretaryjand Nancy Morris, treasurer to lead us through this uncertain year. Mrs. Ann DeReus and Mr. James Fahy became our class advisors. Representing our sophomore class in Senior High Student Council were Mary Pat Kerr, who was elected secretary, Pat Hart, Barb Scanlon, Susie Wood, Vince Bonvino, Sam Bottini, Bea Nelson, Linda Kennell, Jamet Cormia, Vicki Rice, and Cheryl jones. Our first attempt at fund raising was our dance, Swing and Sway with the Sophs, which cannot be classified as a success. We did prove, though, that we weren't complete failures by the hugh profits gathered from our basketball coat check. On class games night we easily defeated the fresh, with the help oi our mascot, Snoopy, a dog. 5 At the end of our sophomore yea.r, Susie lNood, Cheryl Jones, Janet Cormia, Mary Pat Kerr, Marilyn Nile, and Vicki Rice were chosen junior varsity cheerleaders. Attention' A strange rumor is sweeping Ilion's halls of ivy. We, the Class of '63, are finally graduating Due to much hand work, years of patience, quiet study, the efforts of persistent teachers, and a lot of luck, we are finally leaving. As eager and wlde awake freshmen we began by electing Susie Wood president of Junior High Senate Our class nas represented in Senate by Vince Bonvino, Bob Heneka, Tom Deyle, Cheryl Jones, Nancy Morris Janet Cormia, and Mary Pat Kerr. Our first and only daring adventure was the night of the class games when we lost to a very lucky sophomore class however, we had some good times later in the evening at Vince Bonvi- no s and Kathy Sullivan s open houses, and at Laura Mason,s pajama party. --sv ,...4. Gigi, as she likes to be called, came to us from Gottingen, Germany, where she left her mother, father, and a sister. In Ilion Gigi stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Forbes Mutch- ler, and their son, john, daughter, Elaine, and dog, Tina.. Gigi had nothing but nice things to say about her second family. During her stay in Ilion, Gigi took American History, English Literature, English Composition, and Math II. Many people have heard her talk of making math instead of just doing it. She sang with the Orpheus Choir and the Belles in the second semester. Gigi reported for the Quill in her monthly column, Gigi Gabsf' Since she plans a ca- reer in photography, Gigi assisted the photography editor of the Mirror. Perhaps you saw her around the school building with her camera. Gigi also enjoys art and music. She enjoys Dave Brubeck's modern jazz, and even Tschaikowsky. Gigi not only listens to music, she is quite talented with a guitar. Many seniors will remember the times when they joined in a Sing Along with Gigi get together. Gigi brought to the girls the realization that hair doesn't have to be rolled every night. Gigi hardly ever rolls her hair. She wears it either teased or straight. Concerning styles, she reported that German girls seldom wear sneakers and are ac- customed to short shorts instead of berrnudas. She startled us by saying that girls could wear slacks to school. Something she noticed that was missing was the bikini bathing suit. German girls wear little make-up, according' to Gigi. . We will remember her sparkling laugh, bright smile, unfamiliar accent, and her say- ings. Gigi reminded us to try to make the best of it because, as she says, Everything counts a lot. All Ilion students who came in contact with Gigi this year will remember her as one of the friendliest persons I.H.S. has ever known. 4-9 IDR I FQRM You want our picture? KELLER AND HIS CLASS We of the'1l4i1'1'or staff, have searched our minds and hearts for words of praise for Mr. Keller. But how can we explain all the good that this man car- ries in his deeds? The 1960 M irror had a short para- graph, written by one of Mr. Keller's special students, about a special man. We feel that these small thoughts connote far better the hard work put forth by this man: This is a story about one of my teachers in school and how he carries the Christmas spirit throughout the year. The name of this teacher is Mr. Keller. He is a very Hnc person. He does things that most people won't do. He will help you if you are having a hard time on something you are doing. He will do most anything for most anybody. That is how he carries e Christmas spirit throughout the yearf, 4 Need we say more? FIRST ROW, left to right: Lollman. Emrich, Edwards. VVheclnck. Although the bulk of the work has fallen on a few, there have been many whose efforts have made the yearbook possible. In addition to the advisors, Miss Peggy Ferris Qartj, Mr. William Van Nuis fyearbook rep- resentativel, and Mr. Allston fphotographerj have given of their time and talent. Coaches john Call, Martin Manion, and Joseph Nicolette had Bob Heneka, Wes Lints fthe co-captainsj, Tom Bracken, Russ Markley, Bart Moore, Vince Bonvino, and Dave Haggarty as the only returning lettermen around which to mold a team. During the season Sam Geragi suffered a broken hand and Bob Hamilton a broken leg, reducing the effectiveness of the team. The lone victory came at Little Falls with a 26-6 win paced by fullback Bob I-Ieneka. In spite of much hard work, the frosh team, coached by Mr. Bernard Mur- ray and r. SECTION III CHAMPIO S Ilion Central's hoopers culminated a fantastic season on March 23 when they completed the first undefeated season in Ilion's fifty year history. The Bombers began the season with a four game winning streak after having won Ilion's first Section III basketball championship in late March 1962. They proceeded to mow down all competition by scores ranging from a 51 point victory to a four point victory in two overtimes. in two overtimes. The Gold and Brown proved their supremacy over the Mo- hicans in the second game of the sectionals after easily de- feating Canastota 86-49 in the first. The Bombers smashed Mohawk by the score of 5-1--43 and proceeded to knock off Herkimer 74-4-6 with Doug Bernard, Dave Esford, and co- captains, Jim Willey and Tome Deyle all hitting double figures for the squad. The high-flying Bombers went into the championship play- off at the Utica Memorial Auditorium highly confident after a rousing send off by the student body. Their hopes were shattered, however, in the first half as Ilion trailed Lowville 21-16 at the intermission. Bench strength, experience, and overall ability finally predominated as the Bombers began pulling in the third quarter and finally outscored the pesky Raiders 42-16 in the second half. The final score was 59-39, bringing Ilion's winning streak to 26 consecutive games. 139 P1 ,l A 1 1 3 4 4 .N l Left to right, KNEELING: McGrellis, Crossett, Bonvino, Day, Bracken, Weiss.
