Ci Saga Volleyball Ilionis volleyball team was very successful during the 1961-62 season. The team posted wins over Mohawk, Norwich, and Frankfort, and a 4-1 victory over Herkimer. The squad was composed of Roger Fortuna, Harold Shelley, Ed Cooke, Dave Lyman, Bill Kelly, Terry McGrath, Bo Foisy, Ken Cowen, Glenn Kasarda, Steve Jones, and Terry Sweeney. Winter Sports Ping Pong Ilion's ping-pong team, paced by Dobber Clive and Glenn Bush, went undefeated during the 1961-62 season, posting a 7-O record. Both Clive and Bush had 5-2 records and went unde- feated as a doubles team. Bowling Ilion High's bowling team, under Coach Tisci, went undefeated in League play, but had two draws with Norwich and Oneonta. In the post season league tournament, however, the best Ilion's team could manage was fifth place. The squad was composed of Don Applegate, Spike Phelps, Sam Bottini, Carl Darling, and Frank Crossett. S .1 - Me -15 Badminton Ilion High's Badminton team, under Coach M. Bouck, experienced a rather disappointing season, losing to everyone but Frankfort. The team was composed of Jack Valent, Marty Wilson, Don Davidson, Mike Mason, Joe Callahan, and Gary Vogel.

BASEB LL - D019 Dogs Momma May 15, 1961-june 3 Ilion's two meetings with Herkimer on the base- ball diamond in 1961 proved disasterous for the Ilionites. In the First meeting at Ilion, Herkimer's Dave Schad blanked the Bombers on 3 hits, 6--0. Jim Levi knocked in two of Herkimer's runs with a booming homerun, and Schad aided his own cause with a pair of doubles. TRACK - ' 1961 In the second meeting, under the lights at Herkimer, the Bombers jumped into a quick lead, and, going into the bottom of the fourth, the score was tied, 3-3. However, Ed Woodrick ran into trouble, giving up a grand slam to Herkimer's Zenon Lischynski, and the Bombers were out of it. Schad, again, got the win. 1311664115 May 26, 1961 Ilion's track team lost its only meet of the year to the League champions, Herkimer, 56-50, in the 1961 season. The Magicans posted victories in the high jump fTom Canastarj and shot put fRod Sluyterj, while Ilion easily won the mile fTerry Sweeneyl and the pole vault fBob Dunckelj. Varsity: Brown, manager, Bracken, Brewer, Bonvino, Spencer, Willey, Custer, Woodrick, Slocum Absent Smith, Chesebrough, managerg Gardner, Abel, Deyle, Bernard, Coach Sorge. Varsity- The Ilion Vaisity basketball team turned in another winning season under Coach Sorge, com- piling an 11--7 record. The Bombers placed fourth in the Iroquois League with Mohawk, Herkimer, and Norwich placing ahead of them. It was a season of streaks for Ilion which saw the Bombers win 3 in a row and then drop 3 consecutive league games. After this, Ilion won 5 in a row before losing to Nor- wich by one point. After defeating Oneonta and upsetting Herkimer, the Gold and Brown lost the season finale to Mohawk, 57-43. The season included close victories over Proctor C49-45 in overtirnej, Little Falls Q64-6Oj, and Oneonta Q66-64j, as well as heartbreaking losses to New Hartford C46-455 and Norwich 143- 421. In post season play, the Gold and Brown sur- prised everyone by upsetting Holland Patent in overtime, 64-57, dumping Chittenango, 59-46, and trouncing Herkimer, 59-43, to take the Sec- tion III Inter-Area Championship.
