Many of you remember Hector, our class games mascot of past years. His grand- father, Horatio, has come to Ilion High to witness Hector's graduation in the Class of '62. Horatio, an old veteran of the Civil Wfar, is celebrating the Civil War Cen- tennial and, in contrast to the original conflict, has pledged himself to commemorate the struggle NORTH of the Mason-Dixon line. Despite his unscrupulous tactics to prevent the '62 Mirror from going to press, the Mirror staff triumphed, as you can see. However, Horatio managed to foul up our photographs and thus appears in many pictures despite our precautions. Therefore, it is with great indifference that we must publicly announce that the SOUTH HAS RISEN AGAIN!!!!!!! 2 Table of Contents Dedications . . . . Faculty . . . . Mr. Leo j. Sammon One of the finest traditions associated with a high school graduating class is the Senior Annual. It will be a source of many fond memories in the years that lie ahead. The advisors and staff are to be congratulated for their Hne work and effort. I would like to extend best wishes to the mem- bers of the Class of 1962. I sincerely hope that each of you will achieve success in your future undertakings. Please look upon your commence- ment as a beginning and not an end of your learn- ing experiences. The challenges of the future are great, but the rewards of success are equally great. if J Mr. joseph G. Waters Each year the major event is graduation. This event culminates years of planning and work by parents and teachers as well as by the Seniors. But graduation also brings to an end the close relationships of the members of the graduating class. This yearbook, the 1962 Mirror, is an im- portant book for the Seniors now and will become more valuable as the years go on. For these Sen- iors, it will be their permanent record of the Class of 1962. High Student Council Debate Club Thru the untiring efforts of Roger Fortuna, Fay Edwards and their adviser, Mr. Robert Utter, Ilion has a debate team. So far this year, Roger and Fay have had only one practice debate, but there are six actual debates scheduled with Utica area schools. According to Mr. Utter, Roger and Fay are working hard and have spent many hours preparing for their contests. In case Roger or Fay are unable to participate, the team has four alter- nates: Vince Bonvino, Thomas Morris, Paul Max- field, and John Gerber. A The 1962 ff 5 Mirror Yearbook Staff SEATED: D. Yes, Ilion High finally has what it's lacked for several years - a real newspaper! Under the guidance of Mrs. Leonard Wright and Mr. Myron Bouck, co-editors Peggy McClave and Linda Vernooy have developed the Golden Quill into a newspaper that the students can rely on. It was printed bi-weekly and sold every other Fri- day for ive cents a copy. At first, it was quite a struggle, but finally a routine was set up, reporters were assigned beats, and the Golden Quill went to press every other Wednesday without fail. This year's staff did it. Let's hope that next year the students of Ilion High School continue to hear Quill for sale, frequently. BOTTOM ROW: Mr. Passer, adviser, T. Tresohlavy, S. Bums, M. Applegate, F. Edwards, G. Teachers Aid Students Aid senior's treasury Keep in shape During the past year, many generous faculty members have devoted their valuable time to help the student body. Mr. Monohan, one of the senior class ad- visers, spent much time at the concession stand, helping the seniors sell hot dogs to hungry foot- ball fans. Many athletically inclined teachers donned their sneakers to help the basketball and volley- ball teams. Week after week, they scrirnmaged the two squads. Despite for in spite ofl their help, the basketball, and volleyball teams man- aged to win the Section III championships. Late in March, the men's faculty of Herki- mer and Ilion met in a basketball game. The Golden Bummers', won for the second year. Such stars as Fabulous Fahey, Furious Fahy, Colossal Call, Nitro Nicolette, Lightning Lang, Babes Tisci, Dribbler Drake, Marvelous Mur- ray, Set-Shot Salisbury, Terrific Tucker, Fero- cious FindLu'a, Sensational Savino, Shoot 'em up Sorge, Soaring Schleicher, and their coach, Mighty Manion, managed to look like idiots and act like clowns for the second consecutive year. After their opening defeat, the Gold and Brown tied a stubborn Norwich eleven under the lights at Norwich, 6--6. The following week saw Ilion lose to Oneonta, 12-6, in their second game away from home. Oneonta had a tough time with their Ilion adversaries, and a Danforth pass on the last play of the game nearly tied the score. The Bombers returned home the following week and easily defeated Little Falls, 26-7. Bill Reese scored twice for Ilion, and Dick Adams tallied a third touch- down after grabbing a Danforth aerial and racing 28 yards to score. The next two weeks proved disasterous to the Ilion cause as the Bombers dropped away games to Frankfort Q19-145 and New Hartford 126-OJ. An inspired Ilion team played host to league-leading Mohawk on November 4, on a rain-soaked field with the contest ending in a scoreless tie. Bill Kelly almost scored, but was tripped up on the six yard line on a fourth and goal situation. In the finale, before a cheering crowd, Ilion upset Herkimer C6-OJ to put the icing on the cake. Jack Brewer netted 16 points in a losing cause for Ilion, while Jack Folts and Jerry Walczak sparked Herkimer with 13 points apiece. Ilion was to gain revenge, however. On Febru- ary 23, the Gold and Brown triumphed at Herki- mer, 63-52, Jim Willey hit 23 for Ilion, and Jack Brewer and Doug Bernard managed 29 between them. Levi was high for Herkimer with 9 points. With the chips down and the Section III Inter- Area title at stake, once again Ilion emerged vic- torious. At U.F.A., Ilion's quintet whipped the Magicans, 59-43. Brewer and Deyle had 18 and 16 points respectively. Levi hit 10 for Herkimer and Joe Cassella added 9, but Ilion brought home the title. WRESTLING - Wim 2111. WI TER SPORTS Feb. 17, 1962 Ilionis winter sports teams did very well against Herkimer in 1961-62. The volleyball, table tennis, and bowling teams all scored victories in the regular season's matches. In the post season league tournament, once again the volleyball team was victorious, winning one game, 15-0, and dropping another, 15-14. The bowling and badminton teams were less for- tunate, but Glenn Bush and Bob Clive whipped their Herkimer opponents in the table tennis doubles. 95 4, 1962 Ilion's wrestling team narrowly edged Herkimer, 26-20, on January 4, 1962. Wes Lints and Vic Tjeerdsma turned in necessary pins over Terry Coughlin and Gene Campagna to wrap up the match for the visiting Ilion Bombers. Bob Dunckel, Dick Adams, and Dexter Smith also turned in important wins for Ilion. In the post season tournament, the Magicians finished second and Ilion third. In the finals of the unlimited class, Gino', Campagna gained revenge over Vic Tjeerdsma when the Ilion star received a head injury. 1 u BASEB LL - D019 Dogs Momma May 15, 1961-june 3 Ilion's two meetings with Herkimer on the base- ball diamond in 1961 proved disasterous for the Ilionites. In the First meeting at Ilion, Herkimer's Dave Schad blanked the Bombers on 3 hits, 6--0. Jim Levi knocked in two of Herkimer's runs with a booming homerun, and Schad aided his own cause with a pair of doubles. TRACK - ' 1961 In the second meeting, under the lights at Herkimer, the Bombers jumped into a quick lead, and, going into the bottom of the fourth, the score was tied, 3-3. However, Ed Woodrick ran into trouble, giving up a grand slam to Herkimer's Zenon Lischynski, and the Bombers were out of it. Schad, again, got the win. 1311664115 May 26, 1961 Ilion's track team lost its only meet of the year to the League champions, Herkimer, 56-50, in the 1961 season. After defeating Oneonta and upsetting Herkimer, the Gold and Brown lost the season finale to Mohawk, 57-43. There were quite a. few who said we wouldn't, but we ARE going to graduate. Yes, Virginia, there IS a class of '52. In our freshman year, it was Mr. Teeter who Hrst declared, after seeing us destroy algebra, that we would NEVER make it. Our soph world history teacher, Miss Schwartz, once exclaimed dismally, 'iThe only sweethearts who will pass are you four in the back row!'3 Somehow, though, we made it. Mrs. l'Vright would use up numerous class periods telling us why we would never pass the English regents, but we all struggled through. Mr. Grygiel used to shudder convulsively over his Problems class, yet contrary to his predictions, we made it. Looking back over those four wonderful years, we know in our hearts that we'll never forget them. For the present, though, we'll try. Our freshman year proved to be a good starting point. CWe had to start somewherel. We elected Dana Nelson, Karen Holt, Stan Kozenewski, Jo- anne Tuttle, and Elaine Volo as homeroom repre- sentatives to the Junior High Senate, and Jack Brewer served as its President. Our only activity was class games in which we defeated the sophomores. Cheerleading for the freshman squad were: Mary Alice Seymour, Joanne Tuttle, Judy Gregory, Dana Nelson, Elaine Volo, Judy Cormia, Regina Stef- anishyn, Peggy McClave, and Roseanne DeJohn. After the game, we all invaded the home of Jill Urtz. A few unwelcome visitors from the sophomore class also attended. At the start of our sophomore year, two fine teachers fwho obviously were not familiar with our reputationl became our advisors - Miss Irene Pogonowski and Mr. John Monohan. fOh well, to err is only humanl. On the second rung of the ladder, we chose Stan Kozenewski as our president. Ray WVardle was our vice-president and Peggy Mc- Clave and Elaine Volo were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. Our financial project for this year was the coat check for basketball games and wrestling matches. Of course we'll never forget the night we lost all the tags and everyone had to get his own coat! Besides the coat check that year, we had a dance featuring '6The Plaidsi' which made our year a financial success. fWe'll always remem- ber it because it was our last financially successful yearj. It was in our sophomore year, also, that Dennis Dodge first coined the phrase muh which is now a time worn expression used by most everyone. Denny first applied it one day in world history class fMr. Panaritesj stating that Hiroshima was bombed in 194 muh. Mike McCormack took it from there, Senior Class History declaring that Alfred the Muh was king of the Danes etc. This was just another of the great ac- complishments of the class of '62. Just like GE, progress is our most important product. Class games again found us victorious, this time by a scant point, 37-36. Cheerleaders were: Joanne Tuttle, Elaine Volo, Judy Cormia, Peggy McClave, Linda Vernooy, Mary Alice Seymour, Cheryl Dodge, Dana Nelson, and Regina Stefanishyn. We had open house at Marsha Applegate's - we'll never forget that. C Chip and Victor would like to, thoughj. With two down and two to go, we eagerly ven- tured into our junior year. Bill Drumm became our president, Dana Nelson, vice-presidentg Pat Cowen, secretary, and Linda Vernooy, treasurer. We started the year off with our magazine sale which greatly enriched our treasury. CHeaven knows we needed itlj Peggy McClave and Roger Fortuna were co-chairmen of the sale and did an excellent job. We held our junior ball, Mistletoe Memories, on December 15, 1960. It was a fine success under the leadership of Joanne Tuttle and Stan Koze- newski. Later though, we received a bill for crepe paper CS70j which we hadn't counted on. That's OK, Miss Pogo, everyone makes mistakes! Soon, we ordered our class rings and some people were immediately shocked when they put them on facing outward, for the date of graduation glaring up at them was 2961 instead of 1962. However, our fears were soon calmed. fWe all knew we'd make it by 2000 at the latestl. Basketball season came during which we had charge of the concession. It proved a lot of fun and work but little money was earned. fAin't it the truth?J Once again class games rolled around and we lost to a highly superior senor team. Cheerleaders in- cluded those from the JV squad: Cheryl Dodge, Regina Stefanishyn, Judy Cormia, Elaine Volo, Peggy McClave, and Pat Schneck. We also chose Joanne Tuttle, Dana Nelson, and Jill Urtz. After the game, we had an open house at the home of Peggy McClave. Near the end of our junior year, varsity cheer- leading try-outs were held. The cheerleaders chosen to lead the sports fans for the next year were Judy Cormia, Sharon Bennett, Regina Stefanishyn, Pat Schneck, Elaine Volo, Cheryl Dodge, and Shirley Richards. Our junior year also saw the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States. Working for the victorious Democratic cause were Senior Class History Mike Brown, Roger Fortuna, and Bill Kelly. Many a vigorous debate took place in Mr. Grygiel's third period American History class. At the end of the year, jack Brewer, Mike Brown, Rog Fortuna, Stan Kozenewski, and Harry Shelley wereoselected to attend Boys' State. About the only exciting thing that happened there was when Koz pushed Herkimer's Jerry Drabent into Taylor Lake, located on the Colgate campus. Despite ominous predictions, we managed to pass English regents and moved onto our senior year. Roger Fortuna, our politician, was elected presi- dent of the Student Council flixed electionl. Mike McCormack became the senior class president the bribed everyonej Ray Wardle, vice-president, Ellen Greene, secretary, and Regina Stefanishyn, treas- urer. Our first activity of the year was the football con- cession. It was a delight to count the profits from this project. Wfe hadn't seen profits for so long, anything would have been an improvement. Next on the agenda was the Christmas Card sale with Peggy McClave as chairman. We all pitched in and wound up only S4-69 short of what we expected. However, the situation later took a tum forthe better. CNO, we did NOT rob Oneida National, contrary to ugly rumorsll Linda Vernooy and Peggy McClave were se- lected editors of the school paper, The Quill, and both did a fine job of getting out a paper every two weeks. Linda was also our candidate for the D.A.R. award. Harry Shelley and Dana f Bubbles j Nelson he- came the editors for the 1962 Mirror. Our football team, including 20 seniors, upset the Pizza-eaters from across the river in the traditional Ilion-Herkimer contest, by a score of 6-0. Elaine Volo and Dick Adams reigned as Homecoming Queen and King. Once again we had the senior ball in December fthat's right -- no profitsj. Shirley Richards and Stan Kozenewski were co-chairman of the affair, Isle of Paradise. Shirley was crowned queen, a fitting reward for her tireless efforts. Our chief accomplishment was getting Miss Pogo- nowski married. Finally, in October of our senior year, she was happily wed to Mr. David Bouck. 1 It took only 2 yearsll Before our graduation, Cand at this writing it looks like a good betl, we have the class games, sen- ior class play, junior prom, class picnic Cif we can afford itl and Commencement. After that, we can only hope for the best. Senior Top Ten For the first time since 1951 two boys head a graduating class. Roger Fortuna, with an average of 96.558, stands at the head of the class. With an average of 94.583, Harold Shelley placed second. Harold and Roger are in the back row. MIDDLE ROW, left to right: Terry Mc- Grath, seventh with an average of 89.457, Sharon Walsh, fifth, 91.764-3 Peggy Ked- dell, sixth, 89.828, Linda Vemooy, eighth, 88.9093 Pat Cowen, fourth, 93.3635 FRONT ROW: Dana Nelson, third, 93.9423 Pat Schneck, tenth, 88.257, Elaine Volo, ninth, 88.828 Regents Scholarships Ilion captured ten state scholarships, which placed it second in the county.
