CLASSES ...............Page 18 CLASSES ...............Page 18 SPORTS ................Page 29 ORGANIZATIONS .........Page 58 ACTIVITIES ............Page 64 Fred Achierno Mr. Achierno has taught in the Ignacio School District for twenty-two years and has shows his dedication in many ways. He has taught many classes including English, language arts, typing, shorthand, and office practice. He has been elementary and junior high counselor. Somewhere he also found time to sponsor classes in grades from 9-12, too. He said his fondest memory of Ignacio would be the cooperation of the students. We appreciate you too!! Butch Melton One of the things Mr. Melton says he enjoys most about his fifteen years here at Ignacio High School is the community. He started his student teaching at Clear Creek where he was also assistant baseball coach before moving here. In the the years he has been here he has not only taught classes, but has coached several sports. He has been football coach for seven years, volleyball for five, track for three, and wrestling for all fifteen. In the last four years he has been the athletic director for Ignacio. He says he hopes the community has enjoyed his work as much as he has enjoyed working with them. Dick Kasik Mr. Kasik has worked in the Ignacio School District for twenty-seven years. He has taught a variety of classes — including drivers education, building trades, woodshop, a variety of business classes, and has been track coach for one season. His work and dedication to the school is greatly appreciated. His advice to seniors is to do what you want, and do it well. He is a man who follows his own philosophy. 2 Staff Dedication Faculty Dedication is the act of applying oneself in order to better an institution. It is not only three members of the Ignacio High School Staff which shows this dedication, but the staff as a whole. Not only do they better the process of education, but seem to find time to help students with their problems. In doing this, they instill a quality in the students which could not be taught by any textbook. They also find time to show and promote a little spirit. For those ‘uneducated ones’ — this is the ANCIENT WATER CEREMONY!! Way to go!! Of “88” 13 Thank You For A Great Year BOBBY BACA BECKY CUNDIFF Head Boy Head Girl I like to be a leader and I really like the feeling of responsibility. It would be one of my major goals if I decide to go into a leadership field. I would take any or all classes involved in the particular field. Definitely, my first goal would be to go to college then a steady job, travel, then a family. To be Head Girl was one of my goals since I was a Freshman. I liked being involved and helping other people. My years in Ignacio High School have been great and fun filled. To Future Candidates Becky says, “Be willing to work and have fun with it. It is a lot of responsibility. I will have lots of memories from this school.” We Welcome Our Two Favorite Guests Ramon Lucero Sylvain Hudon Ramon Lucero came from Sevilla, Spain. Ramon says he enjoys the American lifestyles because they’re different from Spain. His favorite American foods are hamburgers, hot-dogs, pizza, cereal, and chicken nuggets. What he misses the most is his family and sometimes friends. Ramon is living with Betty Jo and Charlie Quintana. By Christine Lopez Sylvain Hudon was born in Province of Quebec, Canada. He is 16. Sylvain has a twin sister. Sylvain says “I think the students here are very friendly and cool. If you make something bad, they’re not gonna laugh at you, they’re gonna help you!!!!” Sylvain is staying with Joe and Sue Herrera. By Dorena Wing 15 The Under Classmen Your Most Embarrassing My most embarrassing moment at Ignacio High School happened early in the 1984-1985 school year. In fact, I had only been here a couple of weeks. I was rushing to get to the restroom during a class change. I ran around the corner, rushed into the restroom and came face to face with Ray deKay. I had turned the corner a little wider than I thought and entered the boy’s restroom. I don’t know who was more embarrassed Ray or me. Once when a student was reading orally, I fell asleep. The student kept reading, I kept sleeping. My most embarrassing moment involved extra duties”. This year I announced a visiting teams starting line up using our vollyball team’s line up (numbers) the visiting team’s corresponding players (names). I wondered why the coach players looked very confused. Mr. Kelley was in my classroom to do a written evaluation. I started to hand out the worksheets for the days lesson and could not find them. I looked for what seemed like forever and never found them I finally had to write the questions on the overhead. There used to be a ditch which went through the campus. My seniors felt that I should be initiated my first year of teaching at high school; so, they initiated me by throwing me into that ditch, but it took the whole class to do it. I gave them a valiant fight to the end. SPLASH!!! It was 3:45 p.m. ; , on a Friday afternoon. Everyone was rushing around getting ready for a game. The officials came in and asked if there was a place for them to change clothes. I let them in Mr. Kelley’s office. Five minutes later, someone asked for something. I jumped up and said It’s in Mr. Kelley’s office.”, I opened the door and then slammed it shut. I know they’ll never believe that I forgot they were in there. I’ll never forget it. All I could do was leave the office and wait for them to leave. Moments!!!!! ANDERSON, TRACY BAKER, MADILENA BARNES, AMY BEEMAN, KATHERINE BOWEKATY, TRUDY BOX, OBBIE BURCH. GERARD COOK. DAN COOK. Wow that is neat,” says Heidi Pelton, Fidelia Silva, Pam Sines, and JoGienia Thompson. Go ahead, make my day, says Toni R., as Ross P., Tommy C., and Mogs T. look smart. The career fair was held on Thursday March 17, 1988. Many different and unique career areas were represented in the career fair. The areas ranged from very simple careers, to very complex ones. We give thanks to the people who planned, presented, and made the fair possible. It was highly educational, as well as a very helpful presentation. Learning how to be a nurse can be quite difficult. These students are informed of the amount of schooling required. Ignacio Has Fun!!!!! History Day was held here on February 4. It was the third year a local history day was held. Ninety high school students participated. The History Day competitions are based on individuals or groups presenting dramatic, musical or media performances based on events or people from history. This years History Day theme was Frontiers in History. Dr. Tom Eckenrode and Dr. Duane Smith, Ft. Lewis College history professors, and students from the History and Drama departments judged the Ignacio presentations. Judges question presenters about the topic, presentation, and research. Scoring was sixty percent historical, twenty percent on presentation, and twenty percent on relating presentation to the theme. Organizers, Mr. Bailey and Zelta Hott, were pleased by the performances of the students. Local winners competed with teams from the San Louis Valley for regional honors on April 1 at Adams State College. Attending teachers from other schools voiced admiration for the high quality of Ignacio’s first-time presentations. Mr. Bailey has been instrumental in development of a local History Day and in regional competitions at ASC in Alamosa. “Behind achieving students are excellent teachers” is how Adams State College honored Mr. Bailey for his outstanding service. Regional honors were awarded to these Ignacio High School students: First place — Leann Mayfield for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I, “Frontiers in Leadership: The Virgin Queen”; Chuck Ruybal and Mark Hardaway for their dramatization of Martin Luther; Mandy Peacock for her research paper, “Women Conquering New Frontiers in the Old West”; and Terrence Quintana, Karla Ribera and Cindy Quintana for presenting “ Evolution of Hispanic Education”. Second place — Bobby Baca, Chris DeKay, Joe Conway, Allen McCaw and Paul Lam-brecht for “The Rise to Equality”. All these students were then eligible to compete at Colorado History Day, April 30, at the University of Colorado in Boulder. There Bobby Baca, Paul Lambrecht, Joe Conway, Chris DeKay, and Allen McCaw won second place for their group presentation on frontiers of achievement for Black Americans. Leann May-field won second place for the individual on Queen Elizabeth I: the Virgin Queen. These two groups represented the State of Colorado in the national History Day in Washington D.C. this summer.
