What a year this has been, from disappointments to many accomplishments. With that thought in mind, we offer to you this year's yearbook. We hope that you find it full of memories as you reflect back on it for years to come; and you will say. Yes. that was the year By Shirley M. Martinez 6 Lucinda M. Cloud Editor - Co-Editor Resiliency is an important factor in living. The winds of life may bend us. but if we have resilience of spirit, they cannot break us. To courageously straighten again after our heads have been bowed by defeat, disappointment and suffering is the supreme test of character. -Anonymous We learn from failure more than from success. We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do. Great thoughts, discoveries, inventions have very generally been nurtured in hardship, often pondered over in sorrow and established with difficulty. -Paxton Hood 3 t4 sCm a 9S5- 6 Mead $ a zd J azd (? r Tracy Rea. This year's HB £ HG are Kevin Camp 5 Tracy Rea .. . Both HB S G plan to look back at this year often to see what they have done and what they could have done better. Both feel that the other has done a good job this year. Kevin Camp, 18. plans to finish college and become a lawyer. Maybe someday I be a state senator. I NIORWI Before you think about becoming HB S G. there is much preparation to do. It takes time and effort. There must be a desire to win but also the desire to make the school better. HB 6 G isn't just another position. You have to have patience to allow time to implement your ideas, think things out and set an example for students to follow. Once you become HB 6 G you run student Council meetings, and must put all that is required to be HB 6 G. to work. ” Anstead. Lesley Armstrong. Joyce Baker. Janelle Baker. Madilena Barnes. Amy Borst. These two unique people were chosen as leaders by members of the senior and junior classes. Roger is known for his academic ability and his involvement in athletics. Judy is known for her outgoingness and her willingness to go to her utmost to accomplish what she sets out to do. These characteristics are not only assets to our school but are life long traits that will take them far. Jt d af tfrtm a d Pr ftcess This year's Indian Brave and Princess are Matthew James Box and Lorelei Heather Lightning Mountain Flower Cloud. Matthew is a member of the Southern Lite Tribe. He was elected by members of the junior and senior classes. He not only received this honor because of his braids and Indian outward appearance, but because he is looked upon highly by his classmates. Lorelei is also a member of the Southern Ute Tribe. She was elected by the junior and senior classes. Unlike Matthew, Lorelei had a close race with several other girls. Lorelei has a simple uniqueness about her that helped her win those few extra votes giving her this honor. She and Matthew are proud to reflect their heritage! we are proud of them. 24 Virgil Taylor competed in State FFA, (Future Farmers of America) agricultural mechanics contest, in Fort Collins, Colorado in October. Fie stayed for three days. He placed second which was only two points under the state champion. Virgil said the main thing he had to do to qualify for state was study. The contest was judged on performance of agricultural mechanics. Virgil won four blue ribbons and one white. In November Virgil went to Kansas City, Missouri, for Nationals. He was there for four days. He didn't place, but said the experience was fun. and he had the pleasure of meeting new people. Virgil said his parents were excited, but Mr. Andrews (the FFA advisor) was more excited then anyone. Virgil received a plaque for state and nationals. Miss Southern Ute 1985-86 Lucinda Cloud was crowned Miss Southern Ute-,September at the Southern Ute Fair. There were two girls who competed for the title. She had to write an essay on why she would like to have the title. She also had to be interviewed with a panel of 5-6 judges. Then she had to perform a talent. Lucinda feels that having the honor of being Miss Southern Ute, she has met many important people, made many new friends, and has had many challenges. 26 Page Sponsored By Stuarts of Durango HONOR BAND MISS T.E.E.N CONTESTANT Melissa Wright participated in the Miss T.E.E.N. Pageant, which is held in Denver every year. She competed with 85 other girls. In this contest they had to present a two minute speech or talent. Melissa did a puppet play. Melissa said she gained valuable experience from the pageant. She would like to encourage other young ladies to be in a pageant. Cassie Baca, a member of IHS band, will participate in the 1986 Top of the Nation Honor Band. Cassie is really excited about her chance to be a part of an exceptional band. She will have the opportunity to be around people who strive for the best in music and feel it is a vital part of their life. 1985-86 JUNIOR MISS CONTESTANT Marianne Mortensen will be competing in the Colorado State Junior Miss Pageant. When asked what her feelings were about the upcoming pageant, she commmented - Being selected to represent Ignacio High and the community in the Colorado State Junior Miss is really an honor. For the preliminary tryouts the other girls and I were requested to prepare and perform a talent for the judges. We also wrote answers to questions dealing with problems of a national concern and of young people today. W e wrote a little about ourselves. In the state pageant we will be judged in areas such as poise and appearance. creative and performing arts, physical fitness and interview. I have had a real learning experience preparing for this competition and recommend that anyone remotely interested in trying out for it to GO FOR ITU! It has been so much fun getting ready. It is really a rewarding experience. You meet other girls your age, become friends and compete with them for a state honor and an opportunity for a National Honor. Francis Martin, our seventeen-year-old senior exchange student from Switzerland, is here to experience American life. Fie will be here until July 24. 1986. He will be graduating with many friends and honors from Ignacio High School with the class of '86. Francis related how he was chosen as an exchange student. He described it as a mountain of forms to fill out and many people to talk to and out of numerous candidates, Francis was chosen to come. When asked if it was difficult for him to leave Switzerland, he said, No, absolutely not.” At first he missed Switzerland, but now, most of the time, he doesn't miss it. Francis said he couldn't say at this point in time whether he will be happy to go back to Switzerland. When asked what he missed the most about Switzerland, he said mountains and school lunches. Francis has done extensive skiing here and in his own country. Francis also has two brothers in Switzerland. When he gets home, Francis wants to extend his schooling and maybe one day become an English teacher or an engineer. Francis has been a very special person in our senior class and we will all remember him and all the crazy things he has said. It is a very special privilege to have an exchange student in our school and in our senior class especially one like Francis. Thank you, Francis, for being such a unique person. Our activities vary each year according to the interests of students involved. This year's activities have included learning to use a telescope, viewing Halley’s comet and sponsoring a school science fair. We plan to make several field trips related to archeology this spring. The highlight of the 1985-86 wrestling season was our district championship team with six individual champions and a total of eight state qualifiers at the state tournament putting two boys into the championship and placing as a team in the top ten. Several young men had a good season but Roger Hott's 28-1 season was the best, placing second at state. Chris deKay had a great state tournament also placing second. In comparing this year with others we were a very young team and our wrestlers made a lot of progress as the year went along. And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security. And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises. And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes ahead with grace of a woman or a man not the grief of a child. And learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you ask too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure, that you really are strong, and you really do have worth. And you learn. and you learn with every goodbye you learn....... And with this goodbye we dedicate this yearbook to the class of 1986. We love each and everyone of you in a special and unique way. May God bless you all and keep you strong. NEVER SURRENDERWe wish you all the luck that this world has to offer. All our love.
