Floyd, a former graduate, as a member of the faculty of I.H.S. It is a great honor and privilege to be back at Ignacio, Mr. Floyd stated in answer to the question, How do you like to be back teaching in the school where you spent 12 years of your school life? He graduated in 1941. Mr. Floyd is the first graduate of I.H.S. to return and take a position on the faculty. He is married to the former Marie Campbell, graduate of 1941. They have one daughter. At the beginning of the year we wrote letters to all the alumni whom we could. We received many nice letters in reply and we will print some of them. Mrs. Audrey Taylor (Audrey Barnett) writes: I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your letter, and to answer your questions concerning the advantages I gained by going to Ignacio. •I cannot say I have done so awfully much for my country as I was married very soon after graduation. However, there are still numerous ways I have been helped and could have been helped so much more if only I d had the foresight to take advantage of things that were being taught. •During the past several years I have done quite a lot of traveling, since I am the wife of an airman. In Switzerland. I went all through The League of Nations building. It was very thrilling but I knew such a very little of its function that I felt very inadequate. Also in Switzerland, I saw the Castle of Chillon. Some of you have probably read the poem The Prisoner of Chillon by Lord Byron. I hadn t or if I had, I had forgotten. After going through the castle and seeing the pillar where the prisoner was chained for seven years, I just had to read the poem again and again. •OH YES! I too, like a lot of you have said, What good will all this do me? It won't help me to cook or wash dishes for a family. Dear Bobcats, take advantage of all you can--while you can. YOU HAVE SO LITTLE TIME. Jack Schalles writes: ... Graduated from Ignacio in 1949. Mathematics and Science are the subjects that have been valuable in my work. I.H.S. ALUMNI (continued) Teddy J. Salazar writes in part: . . . Ifm on a hospital ship down here in Pusan. As for my work in the Army, well you don't have to have a good education to be able to fire a rifle. So far I haven't had a chance to put my education to work ... I graduated in 47. - . . . . - P.F.C. Henry Alire wrote: - . . . For your information, I graduated with the class of 1950. I was class poet. My education derived from the Ignacio High School has helped me acquire higher scores in Army tests . . . . - Andy Duran, PN3, USN tells us: - ... My scholastic studies while attending Ignacio have been very beneficial to me as an individual and to the U. S. Navy as an organization. As a student I gained knowledge of fellow mankind with which we work, and of the Government under which we so proudly live and serve. There are many other benefits that I gained while under the leadership and guidance of the faculty of Ignacio, which are too numerous to list at this time . . . . I have one regret however, and that is that more of my time was not devoted in the mastery of a foreign language. Actually as I think back to 1949, the year in which I ended my studies, it has not been too long a period of time . . . . - Here is some of Louise Waller's letter: ... As you know I won the scholarship up here to Mesa and so during the summer I made up my mind that I could stand some more education and so here lam. Iam studying Business up here and I really enjoy it. There really isn't much difference in the type of studying I have to do now than when I went to high school. The only thing is that I have to study up here and really study hard . . . . - Louise graduated in 1951. Jimmie Jefferson writes: . . . My stay at Ignacio is one that I will cherish for a long time .... It was a school of friendly attitude and my achievement was great. What I have learned at Ignacio helps me quite a bit while I attend college .... I graduated from Ignacio in May 1951.- Thank you for your very nice letters and we hope that the rest of the alumni wherever they are are getting along fine. $ « n i a t DONALD SEIBEL .... Penney department stores serving the needs of the average American family. Penney Stores from coast-to-coast in every state in the union together form the largest chain of retail department stores in the world. Each Penney Store, whether in a city like Minneapolis or in a town like Victor, Colorado with a population of about two thousand, is a hometown store, with the same neighborly spirit and dependable values that started the first Penney Store on its way to success a half century ago. The Penney Company had its humble beginning in 1902 in a 25 by 45 foot one-roomstore in the little mining town of Kemmerer, Wyoming. Mr. James C. Penney, the young merchant, who began this small venture, was determined to operate a store based upon the principle of the Golden Rule . This meant, as he saw it, serving customers honestly, offering good merchandise at the lowest possible prices. In his mind, it was the duty of a good merchant to sell his merchandise every day at the lowest possible prices on a cash and carry basis--thus avoiding high overhead of carrying charges, accounts, etc. These merchandising principles soon attracted a considerable patronage and the Penney business grew. By 1908, three more stores had been opened. In 1914 the store at Durango was opened--the 62nd store in the chain. Today there are over 1600 J.C. Penney stores, which have over 50,000 full time employees. Our stores are individually managed by carefully selected and trained up-from-the-ranks Penney men who are proud of their company, proud of their associates, and proud of the town they serve. The Penney Store has become a National Institution--as American as Free Speech, yet as local as the town charter. Penney’s always first qua lit ! ! ! DURANGO.
