Back Field: Ward, Duran, Young, Lamberson The Bobcats started off the football season with a new coach and a new game. The coach was David Lewis, who had just completed his playing days at Adams State College. The game was eleven-man football, a far cry from the six-man football that Ignacio had played for the past two years. The boys had a very satisfactory season, in fact it might be called a perfect season since they were undefeated. They started off with a fine game against the Durango B squad winning 19-0 and holding Durango to one first down. Then followed a succession of victories ending with a muddy battle in Pagosa where the Bobcats defeated the Pirates and captured the Class B Championship of the San Juan Basin. Because of the late decision to play eleven-man football the league was not eligible to send their champion team to the state play-off. The team used the single wing-back formation and was able to gain the needed yardage against every team they met. The hard driving backs were always assured of a hole by our hard charging line. But where the team really showed its superiority was on defense. Only one team was able to score more than one touch-down against the Bobcats and this was done late in the game after the smaller but hard fighting subs had taken over. The team looks forward to another successful season next year. They lose Jerry Young, Ivan Gilbert, Martin Swanemyr, Kenneth Massingill, Jackie Ward, Jimmy Jefferson, Frank Romero, and Lewis Luchini through graduation. Their shoes will be hard to fill but with the years experience behind them, the boys hope they will be able to repeat this year's record. Second Row: Manuel Valencia, Raymond Larsen, William Pentilla, Wayne Vaughn, Robert Jefferson, Carl Lamberson, Tony Martinez. Manager: Jimmy Sutton Coach: David Lewis Basketball « The Bobcats really had something to live up to this year. They had a Gym to play in. After several years in the Community Hall, they were lost in the big expanses of our new Gym for the first few days. After awhile the Coach settled the boys down, and they started working hard. They used a single post on their plays, and used a man to man or a zone defense, as the occasion demanded. The boys had a mediocre season winning six and losing eleven. Ignacio entered the Basin Tournament as a definite underdog. They played their first game against third place Dolores, and surprised the crowd by defeating them 45 to 39. The Bobcats went on to defeat the league champions, Mancos, twice, but could not overcome the Pirates from Pagosa. They captured second place in the Tournament and placed two men, Martin Swanemyr and Jimmy Jefferson, on the All-Star team. As we finish the Annual the squad is looking forward to the District Tournament. Best of luck boys.
