Text from Pages 1 - 84 of the 1949 volume:

BOBCATS’ TALK Many years have passed since this school was built, and many classes have joyfully or sorrowfully left the old school they had learned to love; many a memory still remains in their hearts. If this dear old school could talk, it would tell a strange tale. A tale of joy and sorrow, a tale of students who never grow up, of others who left for higher education and some noted profession. But time marches on and the old school has changed ---it has grown in many different ways. Oxford, Tiffany, Arboles, and Allison have all decided to form with Ignacio one large district--District No. 11. This growth in size also causes a growth in many different ways. School busses are now a common sight parading across the front yard, and a new school is on order for 1950, but even names change. For instance, the ball players who used to be Warriors are now Bobcats. We had to have a new name for our team after all the other changes during the past year. This name, Bobcats' Tale, is maybe a strange name to you, but to us it is the best name a book could have, especially an annual. Let's take the words in order. Bobcats of course stand for our teams and students. Since our teams are noted for their sportsmanship, this annual will also aspire to live up to the school’s reputation and be an annual worthy of all the student Bobcats. Of course a tale is just a story, true or otherwise. So you see the Bobcats' Tale is merely a story of the year ’48-'49 in ail its colors; joyful and yet sorrowful for the Seniors who hate to leave the school they have learned to love for so many years. But the Bobcats’ Tale in later years will freshen those golden memories and bring back those old joys to all the Bobcats of 1948-49 in District 11. Many more years will go by and many more memories will be added; the school will collect more tales which it can never tell. This Bobcats' Tale is a starter for the years to come. It is a symbol of the coming school years with more educational advantages. This Bobcats’ Tale is a light in the dark; it is showing us a piece of the future of a bigger and better Ignacio United School. THE SCHOOL OF TOMORROW? As today is the tenth anniversary of the '49ers, Television Station IGNACIO will give a special program showing what each and every one of the members of the class of '49 is doing. This program will feature each in action in his or her own profession. First we switch to Cleveland. Jack Schalles is dressed in a baseball suit, les, he's playing ball for the Cleveland Indians. We see him in the batter's box as he prepares to bat with bases loaded. He hits the first pitched ball. It goes up, up, up and over the centerfield stands. Jack trots around the bases as the photographers take his picture. lie just made his 61st home run to break the record of 60. He just broke babe Huth’s record. Let us switch to a local scene. We see Gordon Pope working on his bookkeeping. He doesn’t want to hire a bookkeeper, and he has trouble keeping his records straight. Gordon is the owner of the biggest dude ranch in Colorado. While we’re in this area, let's go visit a farm. There’s a group of children playing in the yard, while Clarice Mackey is washing clothes. We now turn to the Ignacio High School at Ignacio, Colorado. We see Eloise Hallsted and Marybell Neil are school teachers. Marybell is teaching trigonometry and Eloise is teaching English. Let's switch to the Ignacio city limits. We hear two fellows quarrelling. Dick Scales and Dale Higgin are quarrelling over whose turn it is to wash dishes. They are bachelors and are living together. What’s this we see now? Ah, we see that Carl Phelps is visiting. Whom? Hetty Pope. She is living on a big cattle ranch in New Mexico with her husband. Let’s switch to the Pacific ocean. Look at that sailor. It's Paul Payne, and he’s scrubbing the deck of a battleship. We warned him about the sailor’s life but he wouldn’t believe us. Live and learn, Paul. Let’s go back to baseball in New York. Look at that fellow in the batter's box. Doesn’t he remind you of Delphine ’Casey' Herrera? It's Delphine, and he’s playing ball for the Yankees. You just saw the mighty Casey strike out. While we’re in New York, we'll see a circus. There are elephants and other things in the ring, including Cordy Martinez. Look, Cordy is featured as ‘The World’s Smallest Giant.’ What’s this going on in Greeley? Mamie Mackey, the brilliant woman politician, is campaigning for the first woman senatorship of Colorado. In Durango, Ramona Herrera, the girl whose pet peeve in high school was sad songs is now a radio star---singing 'A Hatful of Tears’ over K I D P. What’s that pilot doing at Peterson lield? He must be trying to kill himself. No, it’s Mary Enriquez. She’s a test pilot for the Hoeing Company, and she’s flying the world’s first atomic powered plane. And last we switch to Chicago to see what R. II. Scott is doing. Why! He’s the ace photographer for Esquire magazine. He’s taking pictures of all those pretty girls at the Studio. That was the last Senior. Now Station I G.N A C 1,0 takes you back to your regular television programs. Ihank you. This is Andy Duran signing off. by Andy Duran Like the forty-niners who traveled ’cross the land, We started twelve long years ago, our future still unplanned. Twelve long years that were not long; yet from them each derives The things we find essential to live our future lives. Their fortitude, derived from God, helped them when distressed. We met that fortitude in school, with which our land is blessed. We’ve learned to work for happiness. We make that work complete Whenever we spread happiness to everyone we meet. We’ve learned to work and go ahead; to make our lives worthwhile. And all the bumps along the way are softened with a smile. They had courage. They had strength. And we are proud to say That we’ve acquired strength and courage in our travel on the way. t. L L We find that money’s not the thing which we should strive to get; Eut friends--and the best in all we do--will make us better yet. Each sets a goal--success; the top--with education first. Knowledge fills up emptiness; knowledge conquers thirst. We give our thanks to teachers who supplied the helping hand; So we could match the forty-niners who would not give up their stand. We give our thanks to parents, for their kindness, thoughtfulness. As we go into the world this year pioneering for success. Name-’ 49ers Colors-Blue and White Flowers-Sweetpeas and Carnations Motto-Education is the food of success. We are planning to form an Honor Society in our school and to join the National Honor Society. r Although this was the Ignacio Bobcats' first year in football, they were in a class with any team in the league as far as expedience goes. Though’ the Bobcats lost three of the five games they played, they lost only to the teams with previous football experience. Coach Tovado had very little time in which to whip the boys into shape before their first game, but he did the job well, for the Bobcats, after two weeks’ practice won their first game. The new equipment bought for the football team was only a small part of the sports equipment bought by the School Board this year. Ida Sutherlin filled that vacancy. The Cubs, Donna Lunsford, Marie Turner, Ora llallsted, and Ida Sutherlin, are shown at the right. The new Ignacio Cheerleaders were elected this year by the I” Club. There were only two changes made in the varsity cheerleaders of last year. The tryouts were held before the “I” Club and several members of the faculty. The two new cheerleaders chosen were Betty Vaughan and Mariana Procarione. These two girls, along with Louise Waller and Eloise llallsted, are pictured above. This is the third year Ignacio has been in the San J uan Basin League. In this league, Bobcats compete with teams from Bayfield, Dolores, Dovecreek, Ignacio Indians, Mancos, Pagosa, and Silverton. Of the many basketball athletes who came for the tryouts, the twelve boys pictured above were chosen to represent us in our games with the other schools: First line, left to right: Clem Baker, Jimmy Jeffer- erson, Harold Cochran, Max Santistevan, the manager, Manuel Valencia, Tony Martinez. Second Line: Frank Romero, Clarence Dye, John Gilbert, Rowe Ki1lingsworth, Jerry oung, Coach Tovado. Not pictured are Ernest Baca and Delphine Herrera. Left: Action Pictures. Below: One of our Cub teams, which played in the Dte tournament. Although the Bobcat ‘A’ team didn't go as far as expected this year, the ‘B’ team went a long way. Through the season until the Bobcat ‘B’ team played Tierra Amarilla there, they didn’t lose a game.Of the fourteen games played, the Ignacio Bobcat ' B' team lost only three. At the top of the page is pictured the ‘B’team with the exception of Manuel Valencia. The left botton picture is the Ignacio Cubs (Heavyweights); right bottom picture is the 1B’ team in action. Last year was Ignacio’s first year to play baseball, but at that the Bobcats won 50% of their games. This year the Bobcats expect to have an even better team. The boys seem to be more enthusiastic over baseball than any other sport. As we go to press, Coach Tavado hasn’t named his starting team, but has some good prospects. The Bobcats are to open the season by playing last year’s toughest opponent, Durango. 1949 Schedule March 25 Ciirango There April 5 Utes Here Apri 1 14 Bay field Here Apri 1 19 Pagosa There April 22 Durango Here Apri 1 26 Utes There Apri 1 29 Bayfield There May 3 Pagosa Here May 7 Playoffs T_ T_ I I r T. The F. H. A. girls sent a package to Luxembourg and one to France for the Foreign Home Economics class. The girls hold a social meeting ortce a month. There are twenty-two active members in the chapter, most of whom are pictured below. Miss Hamilton, the state F. H. A. advisor, has made several visits to our chapter, and our chapter mother, Mrs. Louis Olbert, comes to our meetings at least once a month. The Ignacio Chapter plans to send a delegate to the State Convention at Fort Collins. The girl selected has to meet certain qualifications of the chapter. Our school paper is edited monthly by the Pisanya staff, but, thanks to the lack of paper, we missed several issues. We have quite a few features in it; such as the Honor Roll, for excellent students; Gossip, for gossipers; Sports, about our teams; a poets comer; Editorials; and the most popular page, the page of Humor. Last year our paper won second place in its division in the state contest for high school'newspapers. Not since 1939 has the Ignacio High School had a printed annual. The bobcats’ Tale is also the first annual for the new Ini ted District. N r. Way felt that it would be a worthwhile experience for the students because of such pheses of education and school life as planning, photography, typing, creative writing, budgeting, advertising, art, and most important, accuracy. funds for the annual were raised by a dance given on Jan. 15, by advertising, by the sale of pictures, and by contributions of patrons in the district. The members of the jstaff feel that our many sleepless nights were worthwhile, -and we hope that the purchasers feel the same. We also wish to thank a number of students from the senior, junior, and sophomore classes for the viiling help they have given us. These pictures were taken from the Christmas program which emphasized good music. The program included a Christmas Pageant, a soldier drill, a doll dance, and the singing of Christmas carols by the choir. The School Band played Christmas carols at the program. The Ignacio School also sold Christmas trees to buy treats for all the students in District 11. In former years we have had a Glee Club. Though this year we had a regular chorus for the Christmas program, we had no regular Glee Club or Music Club. The Band is about the only regular Music group that we have now. However; Music is a regular subject in the lower grades. A special choir has been formed for baccalaureate service and commencement. The purpose of this program was to bring greetings to the new schools in District 11, from Ignacio High. The program consisted of the school song, ‘Life of the Party (a play given by the sophomores), a football skit, some novelty dancing, several musical numbers, and selections by the school Band. Director: Mr. McJunkin The Ignacio School Band was organized by Mr. McJunkin in the fall of 1947. At one time there were eighteen members, but due to the fact that several of the members have graduated or moved to a new location, there are now only fi fteen members. At this time most of the band members furnish their own instruments. However, in the near future the school hopes to be able to buy instruments in order that more students will be able to play with the band. During the past year the band has played for the Greetings Program at Allison, Arboles, and Oxford, for the Christmas Program, and for several P. T. A. meetings. The beginners are Dean Pen-nel, Robert Hott, Teddy McKinnis, and Johnny Bertholomey.
