Idalou High School Volume 39 Editors Paige Neill Kayla Harkins Opening 1 WILDCAT ALMA MATER O live for Idalou High School Fight for Colors true Floating high above us, green and gold We will promise to revere and honor you Loyal and together we our best must do Live for Idalou High School She lives for you. 2 Opening Mr. Ralph Motsenbocker began his career as a teacher at Idalou thirty-six years ago and rose through the ranks to the positions of junior high and high school principal, assistant superinten- dent, and superintendent. He became the high school principal in 1970, assis- tant superintendent in 1974, and superintendent in 1975 where he served for the next ten years. Under his capable leadership, our school has surmounted the storms that have shaken the educational system in recent years, thus providing a port for students to receive a truly beneficial education. In recognition of his devoted service, this yearbook is dedicated to Mr. Ralph Motsenbocker. 4 Dedication Mrs. Geneva Burford has taught at Idalou for the past 21 years. In that time, she has not only imparted her knowledge to the many students whom she has taught, she has also fulfilled a much more exacting role — that of annual sponsor. During this time she has provided help to many annual staffs, always maintaining a level of excellence, yet not styling the editors so that each an- nual would have its own individual flavor. This year's annual staff, on behalf of all of the annual staffs she has helped through the years, would like to dedicate this annual to her; for without her constant support and advice, there would be no Idalou annuals. Dedication 5 This One's For You... 6 Opening Opening 7 Wherever Y ou Are 8 Opening Opening 9 A day for Idalou students starts anywhere from 6:00 to 8:00. Students must shower, get dressed, brush hair and teeth, put on makeup in the case of the ladies, do homework con- veniently forgotten the night before, eat if there is time, and dash to school. Some come early to reapply makeup, consult on homework, or just talk, while others dash in at the last moment. For all students, however, 1st and 2nd periods are not always a successful bat- tle to stay awake, ended by announcements. Break follows, some trying hastily to make up for missed breakfast or homework. Third and 4th periods pass agreeably for most, although the lunch which follows seems far too short. Fifth period is also generally agreeable, but the two periods which follow build up a tension which causes students to be unruly and teachers to tear their hair out. For most, this signals the end of the day, but athletes and other competitors practice sometimes as late as 6:30, thus completing a 12-hour day. Who says high school students don't work! Brent, on the go!! 10 Opening — Donna. Renee, and Diana arrived at school Catching up on the latest news Angela and Jill touch up to perfection. MR Let me help you fix your hair. Jack. Time to go to class. Opening 11 Can we trust Amber, Teresa, and Gilbert?? Students voted. The year of 1984 was one of great upheaval in the world, the state, and even the school. In India, Indira Gandhi assassinated by members of her own guard. Walter Mondale hoped that the first major woman Vice-President candidate, Geraldine Ferraro, would boost his campaign, but Ronald Reagan swept forty- nine states — to serve as President of the U.S. for another four years. Students were more affected, however, by the new educational rules suggested by the Perot Commission. No assemblies, only one set of announcements, and tutoring for students failing major classes are only some of the new rules, with more coming next year. Also changing is the former site of the school store and favorite parking spot, now an Administration Building. The morning after election. Mr. Purcell said It won't hurt to gi”e blood.1 12 Opening Opening 13 Stan and Larry expected a long wait. Can we go now? L KVbS 14 Opening See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. Who are you laughing at? 42 The Idalou Wildcat Football Team had a great season, finishing as Bi-District Champs with a 9-2 record for the year. Their explosive offense and ferocious defense provided fans with a thrill not soon forgotten. The Wildcats opened the season with a victory over playoff-bound Shallowater, but then were beaten in the next game in the final minutes by old rival Post. Drawing together as a team, the Cats next crushed Roosevelt to enter district play on a positive note. The Wildcats opened District 2-AAA play by shutting out Tulia 7-0. They lost to District Champs Littlefield the next week by a touchdown, but rebounded to defeat Muleshoe, Friona, and Floydada convincingly. After an open date, the Cats beat Dimmit to advance to playoffs as the District Runnerup. Idalou met 1-AAA Champs Perryton at Dick Bivens Stadium in Amarillo to decide the Bi-District Championship. The Cats' defense held Perryton to 7 points while exploding on offense for 24 points to advance to meet Frenship at Lowery Field for the Regional Championship. The Cats lost 10-0 in a hard fought game characterized by a steady drizzle. Even with the loss, Idalou emerged from the season a winner. Not just the team, but the school and the city gained from the attitude and sportsmanship shown by the Wildcats this year. The Wildcats defeated Slaton, New Deal, Cooper and Post in that run. The Cats then went into a slump los- ing several games after leading at the halftime or in the 3rd Quarter. The toughest losses were an 82-83 overtime thriller to Tulia, a 57-58 home game to Floydada and another 75-77 overtime loss to Lit- tlefield. All three were District games and put the Cats at the bottom of District. The Wildcats then rallied to close the year with a 63-58 victory over Tulia, a come from behind win over Muleshoe after trailing by 15 in the 3rd Quarter to win 63-56, and the biggest win of the year, a 66-63 win over District Champion Dimmitt to close the season. In compliance with new national requirements, a faculty council met early in the year to implement new membership guidelines. The resulting decision was to change the group to a junior-senior chapter and to raise the required cumulative grade average to 90. Members were also required to complete a personal service project. Despite the changes in organization and requirements, the NHS members strove to maintain the high standards by which they had been elected to membership. One of the year's highlights was a Rock-A-Thon. The all-night event, following a football game in Sept., was designed to raise money to benefit the Senior Citizens Center. Members gathered on Paige Neill's front drive with their rocking chairs, blankets, pillows, and snacks. Movies were shown throughout the night as members rocked to raise over $900 in pledges. The money earned bought a television, microwave, radio, card table, and coffee maker for the center. In December members enjoyed a Bingo party with the senior citizens. A Fashion Show entitled Fall into Fashion was presented in October. Guys and girls modeled the latest fashions from the Chess King and Danielle's. A Scavenger hunt for canned goods at the November meeting enabled FHA to share large boxes of staple foods with three Idalou families and one Lorenzo family. The cafeteria was rocking on a cold January night as Pat Gibbs from Cosmopolitan Spa led the members in a night of aerobics. There was magic in the air during Sweetheart Daze and the Sweetheart Ban- quet in Feb. Throughout the year, FHA members rocked with cooperation, enthusiasm, leadership, and a desire to help others. The Quiz Team (Tim Zuber, Kyle Becton and Monte Blackburn) placed sixth. Three teams qualified for and participated at Area Leadership Contest held on the Clarendon College campus. Leadership activities were highlighted in the fall with Lubbock District Banquet at South Plains Col- lege in Levelland. District FFA Treasurer, Tiffany Brockman was Master of Ceremony for the District Sweetheart Contest in which Belinda Calvillo, Idalou Sweetheart participated. Twenty members participated in the field crop and horticulture crop contest at the South Plains Fair in Lubbock. Monty Parham, Jerry Mull, Michael Howie and Tammy Harkins received cash and awards in the competitionTTrt an effort of community service, canned food was donated to Lubbock Children's Home and cash to the American Cancer Society. The 1984-85 school year brought with it a new school farm located southeast of town. FFA members gained valuable hands on experience while constructing buildings, building pens and fencing. Two new General Agriculture Mechanic's classes were started this year with twenty-one students participating. Two hours per day in each class were spent learning valuable life skills involving such things as electrifica- tion, hot metal work, internal combustion engines and farm carpentry. Much of the credit has to go to the strong leadership and hard work of the FFA Officer team consisting of Craig Bednarz, Tiffany Brockman, Tommy Hamby, Russell Laird, Greg Laird, Roger Moore and Cory Bell. The largest amount of credit for success must go to each and every member of the organization for exhibiting a strong winning spirit. I have really enjoyed working as co- editor on this year's annual staff. My deepest thanks is extended to Mrs. Burford for the encouragement which she has given me throughout the year. Without her continuous patience and guidance, this annual would not have been possible. Paige, you have been super! I feel that be- ing able to work together has enabled us to strengthen our friendship. Heather, Amber, Sonia, Beatrice, and Sara — I really appreciate the hard work and great ideas which you have contributed to the annual. Most of all, 1 wish to thank my friends for the kindness which they have shown during my first three years at Idalou High School. I am looking forward to my last year, hoping that our friendship will not end when graduation arrives; but will continue to live on. To the students and teachers of Idalou High School... It has been an exciting year for me, and I hope it has been for all of you. We've worked very hard on putting together an annual that we hope you will enjoy. A special thanks goes to Kayla for being a great co-editor! I'd especially like to thank Mrs. Burford for be- ing such a great sponsor; and, for putting up with us during fourth period, even when we weren't in the best of moods. I appreciate everyone that has worked hard on the an- nual, and I hope you are just as proud of it as I am. Now, to get totally off the subject. Dana and Barbara, ya'll have made my senior year the most exciting and enjoyable year ever. Remember always falling out of the passenger side door on all of the corners, and laughing everytime Coach Towell (Jay — that's for you!) made a mistake? I'll never forget all of the good times we've had and all the memories we've shared! 1 wish both of you the best of luck (you too. Jay!) in whatever you may do! Larry, hang in there, you've only got two more years. Kim H., try to stay out of trouble! To the senior class of '85, WE FINALLY MADE IT!!! Thank you all for the wonderful memories. (And may we never have to draw for buses after gradua- tion! — right. Coach Dowell!?!) And to everybody, stay with it, because The Best Is Yet To Be!! It has been a blast putting together a year- book of memories, so ENJOY, and just remember, This One's For You!! Paige THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!! Kayla 178 Dana showed them how to make sundaes. I didn't do it!! Settle down! It's only a picture! Freshmen' I'm sooo embarrassed!! See what we made Mom. I hope this fits after I'm finished. Jay, do you trust Dana? It's cool to stand in the halls. 180 Closing Seniors playing another game. Closing 181 Vr0 kL —
