Student Council 39 Character Development Stressed in NHS Kathy and Sherri discussed Cindy’s problem of concentration. The NHS has sought to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of high standards of character in the student body of Idalou High. The Honor Society has been able to achieve this goal through the hard work of dedicated members carefully chosen by a faculty committee. Requirements include scholarship — no grade falling below 80 and an overall average of at least 88, service, leadership, and character — no citizenship grade below S-. Members pulled together to earn over $400 for MDA by holding a car wash, and the check was presented at the telethon by two NHS members. Old and new members alike became better acquainted with NHS and each other during a Wacky Words Treasure Hunt at the September meeting. At the Oc- tober meeting three psychologists from the Mental Health Retardation Center spoke to the group; and Pat Simpson, LCC, spoke at the November meeting, and two LCC students sang. NHS presented a 3-D movie, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, to the student body before Christmas. In February, Sol Thomas of Tech Law School spoke to the group on Drug Laws. A mini-Olympics and officer elections were planned for March and April. Tim Sowder, Secretary; Terry Hall, Reporter; Jeanice Frazier. FHR Reaches Out “We are the Future Homemakers of America, reaching out to others through friendship and involvement in FHA ac- tivities.” This main objective of the Idalou FHA has set the stage for a busy and exciting year, and also set goals for the years to follow, just around the corner. Idalou FHA began its year by reaching out and getting involved in the area. In June, six members presented a workshop on the Impact process at the Area I FHA Leadership Workshop in Amarillo. The same workshop was presented again to FHA members of Lubbock schools in October and in two sessions at the Area I Meeting in Amarillo in February. In October, Idalou hosted a leadership workshop involving FHA members from area schools. The FHA Chapter reached out to others in the community through an Adopt-a-Grandparent program that in- volved members with senior citizens. Other activities included participation in the South Plains Fair, where the club won third place in awards; a Secret Pals program to involve new FHA members; Sweetheart Week activities and ban- quet held at the Hayloft Opry House, an Encouter Workshop; and FHA’er of the month program. The highlight of the year was FHA week. Activities during this week includ- ed attending St. Phillips Catholic Church, an Ideal Boy and Girl Contest, an all-school Talent Show, an introduc- tory party for eighth graders, Teacher Appreciation Day, and Western Dress Day. Programs during the year included a dating panel composed of students from Roosevelt, Lorenzo, and Estacado High School; an important Rope Crisis Seminar; and an Aeoribics Program. Other projects involving the members were a scavenger hunt to collect cans of food, which were distributed to three deserving families at Christmas, and a Walk-a-Thon to raise money for muscular dystrophy. The year, filled with many rewarding activities and opportunities for growth, was concluded with the State FHA meeting in Fort Worth and the Annual Officer’s Awards retreat for those members who gave outstanding service to the chapter during the year. STANDING: Kyla Fields. Sweetheart; Patrick Railsback, President. Future Farmers of America is a National Organization of young men and women who are interested in a career in the industry of agriculture. While achieving the FFA goals of promoting agricultural leadership, citizenship, and cooperation, members learn the importance of these goals through active participation in Chapter activities. In the fall members sold sausage, honey, and citrus fruit to raise money for Chapter expenses. In June several members attended the Area I Leadership Training School in Clarendon. Dallas was the site of the State Convention in July with several members accom- panying Sponsor O. L. Christie. Several past graduates received honor at the State and National level, as Rafe Foreman and Tim DeBusk, 1981 graduates, received the Lone Star Farmers Degree, bringing the total number to 116 recipients from Idalou. At the National Convention in Kansas City, Mo., 1980 graduate Blake Anthony, Ken Mull, and Eddy Ferguson received the Amerian Farmers Degree. Idalou had several Star Farmers,” and leadership teams from Idalou fared well in competition. The Idalou FFA was well represented in stock shows around the area, including the annual Idalou Show in March. FFA hopes to contribute to the promotion of Agriculture in future years as it has in the past, and strive for higher production from its members. Participating in an Important Facet of Life The 1981 marching season for the Wildcat Band brought in many new and exciting ideas under the new direction of Craig Hambright. In addition to the band, a sixteen member flag corps under the leadership of Tonya Sherrod was added to bring the band a new dimension. The twirling line-up, while made up of Jr. High girls, helped bring crowd-pleasing perfor- mances and a first place trophy at the South Plains Fair for the second year. The band had to learn a new marching step and incorporate it into the not-standard mar- ching music. While participating in annual events such as the South Plains Fair Parade, Idalou Fiesta Parade, and the Tech Homecom- ing Parade, the band participated in two new events: the Texas Instruments United Way Campaign Celebration and the Channel 28 KAMC Christmas for the Kids. This year six people were named to the All- Region Band, and several band members received awards for their achievements in mak- ing the year a successful and fulfilling one for the entire band. i DRUM MAJOR — Kathy Gray ROW 1: Kathy Gray, President; Bart Parham, Treasurer; Denise Wiley, Jr. Representative; Barry Jones, Secretary; Karen Williams, Reporter; Lucy Cer- vantez. After being chosen as the Outstanding Chapter of District 17, the Chapter had hoped to measure up to this year’s challenge, which was just around the corner. The year had begun with the 2nd Annual FTA Tree-A-Thon for MDA. The group earn- ed over $700 and was happy to present the donation at the Labor Day Telethon, where members also answered phones for 24 hours. Several interesting monthly meetings were enjoyed by members, including a supper with dishes called Kibbles ’n Bits and other strange names, a scavenger hunt, skits, a Christmas party, and a speaker from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The group attended the District 17 Con- vention in Plainview during November and was able to get three members elected to District offices. FTA is proud to have Kim Allison as District 17 President, Barry Jones District Corresponding Secretary, and Denise Wiley, District Chaplain. At the con- vention, Barry also was runner-up in the Mr. FTA competition. President Barry Jones presented a $700 check to MDA as Kim Allison and Sydnie Moore looked on. Secretary Sydnie Moore was shown answering telephone at the Jerry Lewis telethon. Laura Bunting. Chaplain; Bridget Lowe. Historian; Kim Sisk, Sgt.-at-Arms; Amy Neill, Treasurer; Kim Allison. During the past few years the Chapter has been able to meet the challenge to go beyond the past year, and hopes to continue to have success in the future. FTA members Debbie Poole and Lelia Layton opened presents at the Christmas party. Everyone was proud of the “loot” they earned at the annual Christmas party. ROW 1: L. Bunting, B. Lowe, K. Sisk, A. The purpose of FCA is to present the athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of His Church.” The men’s and women’s group are each a separate huddle that meets weekly to share faith and seek ways to reach out to others. The FCA huddles have had some in- teresting programs this year, with the men’s huddle viewing the movie Raider’s of the Lost Ark” and par- ticipating in a Bike-A-Thon. The -what's the name of this game? men’s huddle also sold Val-O- Grams for Valentine’s Day. The Ladies’ huddle participated in a Jog-O-Rama to raise money for those who were to attend the State Convention in January. They also bought tickets to the Cynthia Clawson Concert, and sold them for cheaper rates to the people who wanted to hear the popular Christian songstress. A Christmas party was held at Julie Everitt’s home for both hud- dles to have fellowship together. As in the past, the Idalou FCA hopes to maintain its spirit of fellowship and prosperity in becoming closer to each other and the Lord in the years to come. ROW 1: K. Davis, P. Fergeson, D. The group's major effort has been working toward the goal of raising enough money to at- tend the Pan-American Student Forum Convention, which is held in San Antonio each year. The Club held several money-making projects in- cluding a car wash, hosting a volleyball tournament, and sell- ing Mexican flowers at the Sept. 16th Fiesta — each flower was hand-made by group members. At Christmas the Spanish Club had a very enjoyable par- ty, including breaking a pinata and caroling. Led by sixteen seniors, the Wildcats compiled a 7-3 record against one of the toughest schedules in the State. Highlights of the year included an opening game win over the Shallowater Mustangs, a vic- tory over the Slaton Tigers, and a successful Homecoming against the Mules from Muleshoe. The Wildcats entered the District 3-AAA race with a 5-0 record. The District schedule was highlighted by a 7-6 win over the Childress Bobcats and a very exciting 10-9 loss to the Floydada Whirlwinds.
