JUS LBQSND 1970 PUBUCWED BY JUS SEMICO CLASS OF fCWABOD CRANE CENTRAL SCHOOL VALATTE, NEW YORK VOLUME 16 In forming our 1970 yearbook, we have decided to use some new ideas. For this reason, we have chosen collage as our yearbook theme. Our collage represents an area that has been neglected in earlier year- books - and an area that is just as impor- tant and meaningful to a student as school - the outside world. We feel that everything affects us in some way and is important in shaping our attitudes toward the world, making each of us an individual collage, part of the total collage that is the Class of 1970. Better go easy on that Hai Karate, Peace on Earth - Only at The Brotherhood? McCarthy. Christmas? Gee! That Esso gasoline really works! He demands lOO o from his team ... and commands their respect ... DEDICATION The least that can be said about Gordie” Van Buren is that he is an outstanding coach. This is evident, but his performance of routine coach- ing duties is surpassed by his devotion to the team. He demands - and usually gets - IQCPJo from the boys. He commands the respect of his team, as their leader, but he also receives it as a person, for his willingness to help with any problems they might have, even outside the realm of sports. In this way and many others, he is devoted to the team, and to the whole school. A small man, Coach “Gordie Van Buren achieves his stature not in the eyes but in the minds of those who surround him. For this reason, we dedicate our 1970 Legend to you, 5 6 Why doJ_have to show them how to do a double back flip? care how you run the class! I'm a little teapot ... make the incision here ... Is that all there is to a yearbook? No, I WILL NOT take your driving classes today. An artist, through a college, tries to convey a spe- cial meaning; in school, the teacher tries to bring knowledge to the students. All people have a responsibility to open their minds to the media - whether an art form, or a teacher. By doing this, he can derive meaning from the thoughts of others and come to a better under- standing. This is the first step in learning. SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL MR. Whether said in fun, in anger, or in all seriousness, this statement is true. We are some class, and in this yearbook we are trying to express that fact, presenting ourselves as a unique species, THE CLASS OF '70. But we are not JUST that, we are also the class of ’69, ’68. ’67, and so on, because we have lived through each one of those years, and have been affected by them, each in our own way. In the same sense, we are not just a CLASS. The world OUTSIDE OF school has also played an important part in shaping our lives and has molded us into what we are - each an individual part of the Class of 1970. 32 DIANE M. ZELLER 54 PICTURE NOT AVAILABLE: JOSEPH WATSON 3n Memoriam To those who didn't know her, Terry was only a tall, attractive, active girl; but to those who did, she was a warm, compassionate, and close friend, she never knew hate in any form, but when she did disap- prove of something, she was courageous enough not to keep this disapproval to herself. To her, every problem, no matter how small, was important, even if it was not her own. Terry was always there when her friends needed help and was always more than willing to offer her help or advice. For those who did know Terry, she is gone only physi- cally. She is here in this school spiritually because she was so much a part of it. Despite the great number of things which she was instrumental in acheiving for both our school and our community, she took no credit for her accomplishments. She was always an initiator in getting an activity organized, but when the time came for tak- ing the bows, she quietly stepped aside. We all miss Terry - her smiling face, her friendliness, and her compassion, but her spirit will always remain with us, and we shall never forget the tremendous friend she was to us. One may say he cares, but does he? To say you really care, you must be able to treat him as an equal or better! While you contemplate the reason for living, that reason (main) may have left you; lifeless without purpose! ... We are all underclassmen most of our lives because there is always someone above us who has more freedom, but those who have this freedom have a responsibi- lity to listen and consider the ideas that are introduced by the younger, less powerful majority. We must remember this responsibility when our chance comes to listen. TUB CLACC OP 1971 72 CLAQQ OFFICERS President, J. Wilkins, Treasurer, K. Schmidt, Secretary, L. Van Alstyne, Rep. at Large, R. PACT . . . The after-school hours that are not spent in the de- tention hall show a wide range of student interests. Our dramatic successes are represented by the Senior Play and the choir musical. Local entertainment is found in the Band and Choir; a cosmopolitan effect is. created by the Language Club. These activities are added to by the organized chaos of the newspaper, the exuberance of the Pep Club, and the bruises and stiff muscles of the Ski Club all which contribute to the collage of after-school activities. There is, of course, a special thrill to playing in or watching a winning game (even if you are a bench-warmer), but even the games, that end in defeat, arouse a sense of allegiance to the school. The Riders, whether they be playing field hockey, soccer, volleyball, bas- ketball, baseball, or any other sport, represent our school and us. The section of our college dedicated to sports is filled with memories of past triumphs and anticipation of those to come. vAR nv soccm BACK ROW: W. Linden, G. Davis, A. Austin, M. Gorman, T.
