Whether we plan to obtain employment or to pursue our educations further, if we do not work toward the fulfillment of these dreams, our plans are all in vain. If We have neglected our plans, let us begin to make them, and when they are complete, let us begin to follow them to their fruition. These are Mallach's words: NOT BE GUN Men plan their lives and then neglect their days , Hold up the blueprint for the public praise, Explain this angle and describe this wall, But built on paper is not built at all. . . We need a purpose, but the greatest need Of any future is the present deed. Men plan their lives, and much.admire the plan, But hands must finish what the heart began. Whatever purpose we are planning for, To plan is something but there's something more, - A dream is nothing but a deed undone, And no one builds a building not begun. 66 Men plan their lives with many a lovely tower, The future dream, neglect the present hour, But one day longer means a Week more late. Though men may idle, time will never wait, No Wall is builded, turret upward thrust, By pretty blueprints left to gather dust. 1 zz, 'wwf M71 0427 ttie M. Burnett - Editor F 0RE WORD Traditionally, the graduating class at Terrell has the firm conviction that its year surpasses all those which 'have gone before, and a good many which will come after. This one is no exception. The achievements of this year--academic, civic, and athletic--have combined to make it one of the most successful of all school years. Pride in accomplishment and an eagerness for only the best have made the year what it has been. Such a year should not be closed and put away as one would a finished book, but remembered forever by those who helped to make it and those who Wish to emulate it. Come with us as We present our case for the year which we think happens Once in a Lifetime. I fwmad ,fgaimfrf f LZLLZQJ yy g A Pamela Cash - Associate Editor l 0NCE IN A LIFETIME THEME Throughout this year Terrellites have been a part of a year that can never be recreated. As the years pass, many will venture through Ole Terrell High, seeking a spark from the eternal flame that burns here. Although they will be warmed by the glow of this flame, nothing will compare with the brightness which has shone this year. The many outstanding achievements by seniors, juniors, and sophomores prove that this indeed has been an eventful year. In this publication of the Panther, it is our desire to recapture memories of the past and to present to you a yearbook that will serve in the future as a re- minder of this--our Once in a Lifetime school year. . Z1 , . Hilliard T, Davis, III - Athletic Editor PROLOGUE As we only pass through this phase of our lives once, our achievements will be long remembered. In order to recall this Once in a Lifetime year, the jour nalism class has prepared the 1966 edition of the Panther. It is our aim to pre- sent in a comprehensive manner all the events that have taken place this year. This book will be used as a supplement to the real actionsg to highlight them and to make them as real as they once were. The language is simple and has been carefully chosen to describe all of our most memorable occasions. This '66 Panther will serve in the future as a reminder of the past, always representing this unforgettable year. 4 PHIL 0S 0PII Y-0BJECTI VE- PROBABLE 0UTCOME We believe in the dignity and Worth of the individual, We believe that every child should be permitted to develop his God-given talents to his maximum ability We believe that every child should be an acceptable as well as a contributing mem ber of society. Our Objectives are: to develop habits of good citizenship through an under- standing of democratic principles, to develop sound mental and physical health, to give guidance and direction that will enable pupils to choose wisely the voca- tion from which they can give the most effective service, to develop Within the individual a sense of responsibility for his actions and respect for the spiritual values of life. V Outcome: We hope that there will be a definite evidence that pupils will have developed, by the time they finish high school, desirable skills, habits, knowl- edge, understandings, abilities, and appreciations to the extent that they will be able to make intelligent life adjustments in our American Way of Life. 0 WE PROUDL Y DEDICA TE THE 1966 PANTHER T0 MR. LAFA Y ETT E WILLIAMS Some men are born great, others achieve greatness, some have greatness thrust upon them. ----Shakespeare For many years, those of us associated with I.M. Terrell High School have had the privilege of knowing a man who truly possesses an innate greatness . That man is Mr. Lafayette B. Williams. During his years at Terrell, he has accomplished not only the task of being a great administrator, but also a great friend, counselor, and teacher. Students think of him with the respect and love that only a man of his caliber can receive. His sound advice, his stern discipline, and his clear-cut definition of right and wrong have always been a guiding light. He has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance to the student body. No problem has been too small to discuss, and no task, too difficult to tackle. In all situations he has been found capable of making positive contributions. This dedication is but an humble effort to show our appreciation for his thirty- seven years of diligent work, for his noble efforts and untiring devotion to the cause of keeping high the standards 'of I.M. Terrell High School. With a deep sense of humility and genuine affection for one who has proved himself to be a real friend to youth, the Journalism Class dedicates the 1966 Panther to Mr. Lafayette B. Williams. f x 1: 52331 1. il i 1151-1 ' Q1 5252 1 SW Maia K 61325 232257 :Y wise. It is our task to guide, lead, and motivate them to higher goals of achievement. This is a period for our children to plan for the present and future. Once in a lifetime will they enjoy these opportunities. Exploits in Science and Technology point the way to a glorious future for those who are prepared. Education is the key to this future. The pitfalls, the blunders, and the mistakes are inerasible. The past is already a reality which can not be changedg however, the future is anticipated reality which can be modified and corrected. We, as seniors, realize this. We must, therefore, forget the blunders of the past and prepare to approach the future with newer goals and better criterions. Willie M. Smith, devised a unique method of renewing the old Terrell spirit ,in those who had once passed through its halls . During the Homecoming festivities, they sponsored a banquet for all alumni, which was very well attended. The ipictures on these pages show some of the scenes from a memorable evening. Above, right, is Mr. King, delivering the welcoming address. On the left is Mr. Richard Hill. In the center is Mr. R. Gregory, the principal speaker. At the bottom, Mrs. Robbie Session, Vice-president, speaks. l The objective of the P. T. A. is to promote better relations between parents and teachers, so that they might cooperate intelligently in the training of the child. l lO8 l x f '1'-zs2al xfaf1zz1:1!- . ,RJ A wsrrfrq-sgggwseiwiw was s., , : U, K w'mM .L.k.E.,g:. if-1 ...,,m.,.sa.,. t , , r 33,5 6, ff-1-'Kali as-,fssrf.Ng,2Y?i,irl 1 ws K M N fl. ,X gk? fir r-'EERE Coach Johnson speaks for alumni guest ' 'Z no 2. 511 Q , h .f :Carrara as Milk 1, A KP , S wi K ' 'iff ! Did you catch that error TRIBUTE The Journalism Class of 1966 feels privileged to have worked with so fine an individual as their Advisor, Mrs. L.D. Phillips. Her untiring efforts to help students reach the highestlevels of achievement have helped them to keep the school'S yearbooks, newspapers, and other pub- lications representative of the growing, filled-with-activity institution that Terrell tttv is. She has always advised rather than dictated, and sought to guide rather than to lead, insisting that publications should reflect the tastes and ideas of students, rather than her own. Such an advisor comes only once in a lifetime, and we are proud she came to Terrell High. Thank-You, Mrs. Phillips, for making the contribution that you have made. , --The Staff It takes dedicated minds for the yearbook How is this for a Change'??'? to .be developed. If so, Terrell is doubly proud, because she has two. In response to the inspired coaching of Walter Day and Robert Hughes, r their respective teams finished their seasons with high honors in district and state competition. Our gridiron guys compiled the most impressive record in eighteen years advancing to the state finals with a 10-1 record. To the surprise of no one, our cagers, as State Champions, returned to the State play-offs again this year. Coaches Robert Hughes and Walter Day have demonstrated ability not only to develop the physical aspects of a young man's character, but also to encourage him to find Within those mental and emotional characteristics which will help him obtain victory in the game of life. These men are to be congratulated for giving such outstanding service to the teams, the school, and the community. Track Team Bottom QL to RJ: E. Minneweather, B, Jenkins, J. Moore, H. Foster, D. Cass if J, THE NE W BEGINNING The end of our high school education marks the beginning of another phase of our lives. It is, in a sense, a new beginning g one in which we leave behind one part of our lives only to enter another. The successes and failures of the old phase will be of little or no consequence in the new. It is up to us to make the new beginning what we will. ' A - 3- EMC THE JOURNEY Just one more river to cross you say, Just one more hill to climb, Then down in the dale our dreams await The dreams we have journeyed to find. But alas, my friend, from the top of the hill, The road like a ribbon still runs. . . And the rest of the mist whispers, Rest and refresh, for the journey has only begun. Beyond lie broad valleys and gleaming vales, Rivers that dance in the sun. . . 6 While veiled in blue haze the mountains arise, The mountains we still must o'ercome. ce 6 Let fall then a dream at the top of each hill,i 'T A dewdrop of hope by each stream. . . Someone will gather the crystals of hope, Someone will follow the dream. J .W. McKearin l f wf jgjfglgff 'ji C' ,fc ZS, Qc A f55Kfcg1KnJ W, ff?
