If we were not pulling ponytails, We were out shooting beans. But today we are preparing ourselves. For what, do we really know? Perhaps it's pursuing an army career, Or receiving a Nobel prize in Oslo. Tomorrow is truly a day to consider. The future, although unknown, Is most important to everyone. Only God knows and He alone. Yesterday has come and gone. Of the past we read and sing. Today we are preparing ourselves For whatever tomorrow may bring. Bobby Ray Sanders A I -. mtl LxhL V P lillippa Lynette Ferguson - Associate Editor ap' if V. J-ul' t hm' vi 0l'2l.UOI' It is the sincere hope of the Panther Staff that the 1965 Panther, along with recapturing the memorable events of the days spent at dear ole I. M. Terrell, will also act as a stimulus to every Terrellite to seek success as he journeys along the various pathways in life. Within these pages lie remnants of some of the most important and enjoyable days of our lives, which provide for the public, tangible evidence of a profitable and worthwhile year of education--a year which will con- tribute to our happiness or sorrow, our success or failure, in the years to come. Thus we have attempted to project a Look into the Past , hoping that you will constantly keep the Future in Mind . Carol 'Eleanor Brooks - Editor li A Look Into The Past. . . With The Future In Mind jkenfle It is true that one can never really recapture the faith, the hope, the joy, the curiosity, the zest, the it's-great-to -be-alive feeling of the past, yet one can never truly anticipate the pleasures and ordeals of the future. Tomorrow, though certain to come, is yet wrapped in a shroud of mystery beyond the speculations of mortal beings. All, then, that are implicitly ours are the shining reminiscences, the golden recollections, the sometimes-vague memories of yesterday. And yet, when we think on it, is yesterday really so removed from the all-consuming now, the ever-awaiting tomorrow? In today's world, it is too easy to forget the accomplishments of the past, too easy to ignore the wisdom and strength w'e have gained simply by having been alive yesterday. It is this utter simplicity of forgetfulness which inspires the 1965 Panther staff to reiterate the year's accomplishments with the hope that they will indeed become building blocks of the future. Yesterday can only teach, offer hope, and inspire us to reach toward tomorrow with open minds, willing hearts, and burning ambitions. The future can fulfill the dreams and realize the ambitions of this maturing generation. And so, stealing a final sentimental glance at yesterday, we embark upon tomorrow with Mary Gardiner Brainard's words in mind: I see not a step before me as ltread on another year, But I've left the Past in God's keeping--the Future His mercy shall clear, And what looks dark in the distance, may brighten as I draw near. Bren ja Edmon I 0AglfLe Many years from now, each of us will have occasion to leaf through the dusty, yellowed pages of the 1965 Panther and to smile a bit as we recall the significance of each picture. Our faces will glow as we turn these pages, remembering old friends, old teachers, old classes, and especially old class mates. We will chuckle as we notice the youthful faces and physiques, and we may blush at the recollection of our adolescent attitudes. This book holds many memories, some happy, others sad. But, never- theless, not one could ever be forgotten. All of them will be stored forever in our hearts to be pondered occasionally as time goes by. The 1965 Panther staff adds this volume of glowing reminiscences to the mounting collection of Terrell High memoirs with the hope that, as the years go by, the memories will grow sweeter and become more indelibly fixed in our hearts . l5jAiA:i0lal1y- Ogfecfiue- mivflvagd Oufcome We believe in the dignity and worth of the individualg we believe that every child should be permitted to develop his God given talents to his maximum ability. We believe that every child should be an acceptable as well as a contributing member of society. Our Objectives are: to develop habits of good citizenship through an understanding of democratic principlesg to develop sound mental and physical health, to give guidance and direction that will enable pupils to choose wisely the vocation from which they can give the most effective serviceg to develop within the individual a sense of responsibility for his actions and respect for the spiritual values of life. Outcome: We hope that there will be a definite evidence that pupils will have developed, by the time they finish high school, desirable skills, habits, knowledge, understandings, abilities, and appreciations to the extent that they will be able to make in- telligent life adjustments in our American Way of Life. af L S ga, Sbecbcafion Rarely in a lifetime is one privileged to know an individual who possesses a driving ambition, an awareness of self, of others, of inevitable progress, a sense of dignity, a thirst for knowledge, and a selfless nature. Yet two generations ,of Terrell High students have worked and studied with one so rare, Mrs. Hazel Harvey Peace With a firm hand and wise counseling, she molds the lives of.. hundreds of students every year , and for eight hours each day con- cerns herself with the individual welfare of every pupil. Though she may not realize it, she inspires many of her temporary charges to aspire to the limit of their potential. She does not reach each student with her perennial message of achievement, but those whom she does affect remain eternally grateful for having known, even briefly, Mrs. Peace. Because of her profound interest in young students and her undying faith in the worth of a sometimes-wayward, often-impul- sive generation, the 1965 Panther staff dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Peace. And with this dedication travels the hope that the corridors of I. M. Terrell will long echo her firm guidance and profound Wisdom . THE 1965 PANTHER STAFF reefinga May Itake this opportunity of expressing my sincere appreciation to you, our parents, alumni, and friends for the splendid support we have received in the past and presentg we solicit your continous cooperation in the future. I. M. Terrell has a glorious history. Our sons and daughters have carried the Old Gold and Blue to great heights in every field of human endeavor. Since the past is a prologue to the future, we face the future with happy anticipation and with a sense of responsibility and dedication for the task that lies before us. Sincerely yours, H. L. King 767445, James Ireland Cash, Jr. - President of the Student Council will CLIll'l0f go Z?acL What I have written, I have written. These words of Omar Khayyam should reflect the spirit of each of us as we face the in- evitable end of another school year. There are some things we would like to blot out, some incidents that occurred during the past year of which we are ashamed. But regrets of the past have no position in the ambitions for the future. Though we cannot relive the past, there is something we can do to right the wrongs of yesterday. This something lies in our future. Here, and here alone can we neutralize misdeeds of the past. We can neither erase unfortunate events completely, nor can we alter them. There- fore, we must: Seek forgiveness for the cutting word spoken, Acknowledge the wrongs we have done, Restore the fellowships we have broken, but most important, Learn from the errors of the past And make the coming years the best we have ever had. It requires no courage or stamina to give up in the face of failure But the true test of the strength of an individual is his ability to press forward, undaunted by discouragement, and to achieve his goals. Yesterday is gone, its deeds are irretrievable. But tomorrow looms on the horizon as a promise of success and achievement for the de- termined youth. JI ,4 ,f y6LCll,Ay Cl,ClfLAg As the twig is bent, so the tree is in- clined. It requires infinite skill, patience, understanding, and knowledge to bend hun- dreds of twigs in the direction of success. Yet, this monumental task is the everyday existence of each I. M. Terrell faculty member. We do not often realize their worth, and we seldom thank them for giving us their lives. But someday each of us will look into the past and recall these dedicated instructors who gave us our future. Q. - . ,. But, as all good things must, they draw swiftly to a close and leave us standing on the threshold of commencement. In the brashness of youth, we plunge into senior activities and assure our class- mates that graduation is to be anticipat- ed. But one day, during a rare lull in our activity schedules, the inevitable memories begin to Wash over us and We suddenly Wish that high school could last another year. But it cannot. And so, committed to tomorrow and armed with the wisdom of yesterday, we take one final look into the past. . .With our future in mind. T Q . CLAS OFF! EHS yi 2,5 Wee, 7:-eg. I7-111436 Robert Williams Melvin Jennings - Senior Class President As we gaze retrospectively toward our past achievements, we often think on the question--What advancements and ideas have We acquired in the past which will enhance our future prospects for success? Those of us who have struggled through temptations, failures and heartaches, and have emerged with heads bloody but unbowed--displaying that persistent attitude, that uncontainable urge to stick it out and to win--can truthfully say our past progress renders us more than ready for the untold myster- ies of the future. If for some of us the past has been a series of blunders and an occa- sional veering toward the Wrong track, We need not despair of the future. A person who is Willing to elevate himself will and can do so through hard Work, determination, and common sense. What the future holds for us, no one knows. But by preparing our- selves through the enrichment of our past knowledge We give some as- surance to ourselves that We have great possibilities of future success. r rl Sharon Sherry Allen Future Nurses, '60-'62, New Mechanics Club, '60-'62, New lloniemakers of America, '60-'62g Art Club, '59-'6Og New Mechanics Club Queen. As juniors, we are expected to maintain the maturity of our years, yet we are often re- garded as mere children whose wants and wishes are insignificant. Often we recall with nostalgia the carefree sophomore days, and wish that we might somehow return to that sheltered haven. At other times, the dreams of seniority overwhelm us, and time cannot pass quickly enough. And yet, with all of its seeming disadvantages, the junior year has taught us much about life. We have learned to give without always expecting a reward, we have learned to bow to authority and seniority without feelings of rancor or resentment, we have learned patience, for we shall soon stand in that limelight of seniority so coveted by juniors, but most of all we have learned that it is not enough to dream of the future, for dreams are only visions of the glorious achievements tomorrow holds for those who can conquer today. We are young ladies and young men who are seeking a significant place in new surroundings among new people. Though We cling to our old friends, we strive to erase all other traces of yesterday. In our quest for maturity, we look toward the future with eager hearts and open minds. Yesterday holds only memories of a fading childhood, but tomorrow holds the promise of assurance, maturity, and success. i Sandra Allen 0 425' , . ..:.:,:: ,l.,.1z. .w- - s .ay trty B j . b v :L 5 k.B Linda Gowans r ., , 7 Cynthia Adkins I A James Allen 11. f Maggie Allen 1 if . This is a difficult decision, yet one made easier through the knowledge and en- lightenment gained from classes. From courses of varied nature and levels, the student realizes his special aptitudes and abilities and is led into a vocational field suited to his skill. A variety of classes also serves to broaden the general knowledge of each individual. Each course studied in high school adds a bit more knowledge to a growing store and assures the student of that much richer a future. A class alone is but a small tool with which to build a monument of success in a world of limitless opportunity. , 2 ,, 0 g+f11MwfQL,7p5jg VMMX . A sound body, free from disease and fatigue, insures a student of a more alert and agile mind. Sports and games, Whether engaged in for plea- sure or for competition, are also highlights of high school years. They provide experi- ence in teamwork and teach clean sports- manship. These are qualities which, once learned, become permanently incorporated into the personality of an individual and stand him in good stead long after the mem- ories of high school have faded. Athletic skill can provide years of enjoyment as well as insure a healthful and productive future. in 32' V W . gl .
