Norcom feels this class is her pride and joy for she will release them from under her wings into life. This year, unfortunately, I. C. Williamson, R. 51 THE DEATH OF A HIGH SCHOOL The day had begun with a setting sun, Lost was mind in a forest of confusion And so I sat in the corridor waiting Empty like the living deaf for a word, I thought, If she should die, I would too, For what food is to the hungry, What water is to the thirsty, She is to me. What sight is to the blind, What rest is to the weary, She is to me. For what life is to the dying, What love is to the unloved, She is to me. You can’t take the sweet from the sugar, Or the bitter from the lemon, And you can’t take her from me. Cause like sugar and its’ sweetness, A lemon and its’ bitterness, We stick together We are one. The doctor approached me, His eyes spoke the word, Then silence, Deafing silence. I wept tears of sadness for you, Hateful, ignorant foolish you, Don’t you know that killing the body Does not kill the soul? Once more I wept — Not tears of sadness, but of joy For I realized the soul of I. C. Norcom will live on. I awoke, the day was ending with the rising sun. Beverly Jordan SENIOR CLASS MOTTO: “Our necessities are few, but our wants are many. CLASS COLORS: Black and Yellow CLASS FLOWER Yellow Carnation with Black Tip CLASS OF 1972 CLASS POEM “Today Marks A Beginning” CLASS SONG: OH! Now the time has come For four years this has been our home. How fast the time does fly. Since now we find we must depart, today we say good-bye. We ' ve been together for so long. A family through- out the years. And as we walk these aisles today — it brings us all to tears. It was here we learned and searched and found that dreams come true. And that there are great rewards in the little things we do. We have no desire to cease learning nor are we faint in quest, for today marks a be- ginning — Our search for but the best. We have not placed our swords in the sand, for the battle has just begun. There is much for us to conquer, be- fore the setting sun. Thank you, I. C. Norcom — And as we go our way, Our minds shall always remember This very special day. By: Mary Grimes Oh! Now the time has come when we must say good-bye. This is the school we’ve loved all our lives, we have tried to be, what you’d like to see. Oh! We have come; but not to say good-bye. Like a stormy sea singing a melody, now the time has come to say well done, we are on our feet, now with a steady beat, let it be like a calming feat. S tanding up for the glory, our Lord has brought thee, standing up for the rights that we tried to restore thee ; going the right way, facing a new day; bringing us joy, bringing us harmony. Edwards — PRINCIPAL 88 Principal’s Message Your last year of school has been one fraught with disruptions and walk-outs. This certainly has in some measure broken the continuity of your academic achievement. However, I am happy to say that many of you have still maintained your high level of achievement and are graduating with honors. We all entered the school year 1971-72 with mixed emotions and concerns about what would be the future of the school we all love so dearly, Norcom High. The new direction of the curriculum at Norcom is career oriented. The administration, fac- ulty and students will determine the fu- ture in education in our country. It is our desire that we will point the way in sci- ence, technology and career preparation on the secondary level. Norcom has been blessed by the contri- butions you have made through your many talents. Your individual and group accom- plishments have showered honors on us. For all this, the Norcom family is very grateful. You now begin your new venture in life where you have to make the decision to further your education or enter the world of work. Plan well for your future so that you will not have to live with regrets. In your plans, include service to your fellow- man. So, as you come to this new begin- ning for you, I wish for you a successful and happy life. Waiting to start faculty meeting. 89 Mr. John L. McGriff Assistant Principal Discussing business at faculty meeting. Message From The General Administrator for Discipline The people of our nation are more in- volved in the social and political issues than ever before. This increased involve- ment demands a higher degree of indi- vidual responsibility. If the Democratic process is expected to succeed, it will require mature and re- flective thinking on the part of all mem- bers of our society. We must try in every way to cultivate and develop positive attitudes. We must constantly be mindful of the fact that, we must respect others, if we are to demand respect from others. The members of our school community have tremendous potentials. This includes the students and the teaching staff. These potentials will not develop to their full capacity unless there is a unification of efforts to reach desired objectives. Each individual has a contribution that he must make to the success of the total school program. Negative attitudes and selfish motives have no place in our edu- cational patterns. Our graduating seniors are on the thres- hold of their careers. This is the beginning of a new age. Always remember that together we stand and divided we fall. Still at work even after school hours. 90 Message From Assistant Principal for Instruction Congratulations to the class of 1972! You have attained an important goal in life’s sojourn. Your graduation marks both the end of many goals achieved and the beginning of better things that lie ahead, both for you personally and Norcom High School. You can draw strength and courage from those many Norcomites who have forged through the rough ways before you. The class of 1921 was the first class to graduate from I. C. Norcom High School on Chestnut Street whereas the class of 1938 marked the beginning of the new high school on Chestnut Street. The mid-year class of 1953 was the last class to graduate from that building while the June 1953 class initiated the present era here on Turnpike Road. It is certain that each change was met with mixed emotions. You can look back proudly upon your predecessors just as generations of Nor- comites will draw on the rich legacy which you have left. Next year begins a new and exciting era in Norcom’s illustrious his- tory and only history can judge the suc- cess of this new venture. Live up to the finest in Norcom tradi- tion. Continue your quest for knowledge. May you acquire wisdom, and may God be with you. Dr. Mrs. Morlino at the Prom. Dr. Vito Morlino Dr. Morlino and Mrs. Waters discussing business. Art Department (L-R) Sylvia Johnson, Albert Eure, Shirley Coffey Mrs. Shirley Coffey Art Mr. Albert Eure Art 92 Guidance Department Pamela Richardson Ruth R. Waters — Chairman Catherine Woodhouse Guidance has long been recognized as an important function of education. It is a point of view, a process, a way of working with people, and an approach to the solution of prob- lems. It is a means of helping the individual make intelligent choices in his day-by-day living. This process must be satisfying to him and contribute to his present adjustment and future progress as a member of society. The guidance process at Norcom offers the following services to the individual student: educational, vocational, cultural, personal-social, and health. These services aim to assist the student in understanding his own abilities in learning to make decisions about his edu- cation and his future, and in finding his place in society. In September, 1959, the Guidance Department launched an organized program de- signed to raise the cultural level of our youth. The Department, through its newly created Culture Club, and in cooperation with other departments, teachers, and student groups has presented an annual Fine Arts Series. The Modern Dance group, the Senior Chorus, the Dramatist Society, the Instrumental Music Ensembles, and the Art Department, have participated each year in the Fine Arts Series and have presented programs that received outstanding recognition and praise. Hey, let go of my leg. I bet you can’t catch me now. I bet you can’t take the ball from me. Hey, wait for us. v — •+ 119 71-72 Football Team The football season started in early September and ended in late November. Out of 9 games the Greyhounds won 5 and lost 4. The team consisted of 41 players, mostly second year men. They played very well. Although this year showing was not as good as it has been the Greyhounds had very experienced and dedicated men. The most exciting and outstand- ing game of the year was Norcom and Wilson. This game proved that Norcom had the “finest and Strong- est men. They went into the game with determination and came out with a victory. Tony Holloway, rookie, replaced Richard Lattimer after an injury, with the help of the team brought us this victory. The game ended with a 20-8 victory for the Greyhounds. Our coach Mr. George Moody provided the team with the instruction and guidance they needed. Although we didn’t have a winning season, we, the Student Body, feel that the coach and the team has done a very good job this year. And we would like to show our appre- ciation and would like to thank you, Greyhounds, we Thank You. Orlena Bracy Coach Moody concentrates on a few plays for the next game. 120 The Junior Varsity looks forward to playing varsity for the next year usually, but because of the firing of six starting players they got a chance to move up this year. They had a very good showing when they decided to take over. They are L to R, Ricky Richardson, Thomas Winborne, Barry Elliott, Micheal Wilson, Robert Wilson, Frazier Nelson, Sherman Wright, Richard Rodgers, Carl White, Charles Orton, Freddie Miller, Barry Dunston, and Doni Cross. Kneeling are Brown, Coach Schwab and Larry Taylor. This team proved to Norcom that they can play as well as varsity. The six that had all of the jive are standing Eddie Daughtry, Norman Moore and Ronald Goodman (team captains), Steven Strong, Zeke Hudson and Tony Tapp (kneeling). 121 Varsity Basketball Team The team that brought the Greyhounds to the first round of the Eastern District Cham- pionship game are L to R; Larry Warren, Tony Tapp, Steven Strong, Archie Sexton, Ed- die Daughtry, Raymond Nelson, Anthony Holloway, Norman Moore, James Overton, McCoy Powell, Ronald Goodman, Thomas Gore, John Holland, James Hudson, Van Ed- wards. At least ten different players were a part of the starting line-up throughout the season. 122 Coach Eure consults his catcher as his as- sistant Coach Scwab looks on. Archie Sexton pre- pares to torture their opponent’s pitcher. They won the District title. Lattimer, pitcher, pitched us to victory every time. The baseball team had a very good showing this year. The team waits for their chance to show what they can do. The players have the look of victory in their eyes. C - -J 123 I. C. Norcom Tennis Team Veteran Orion Willis tries not to miss the ball.
