PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE You are graduating from high school at the most frustrating, and yet, the most interesting time in the history of I.C. Norcom High School. There is general unrest in society and in the halls of learning throughout the world. As you meet these challenges, we caution you not to be caught up in the emotions of other people. Think for yourselves and attack the problems of life with a serious- ness of purpose. Rededicate yourselves to a deeper understanding of the true meaning of democracy. Enjoy its guarantees and pre- vent its misuse by those who would mis- interpret it. We have challenged you during your four years here to be the best in all your endeavors, while respecting the rights of others. Congratulation ' s to you, your parents and teachers on your graduation. It is our desire that each of you will be crowned with success and hap- piness as you take the next giant step. Assistant Principal Mr. John L. McGriff c Principal Mr. Albert T. Edwards ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The day of parting is near and my glad heart is filled with sadness. In reflec- tive thought I view the past four years as a brilliant satellite of success. Many of you have contributed in various ways to our comprehensive high school program. You have not only earned individual honors, but you have established the im- age of Norcom in the minds and hearts of our community. There are many values developed dur- ing one’s high school career. Some of these values are academic while others are social. The most important social value is self control — to be a winner and not a braggart, to be successful and not impor- tant, to be loyal and not cloaked in deceit, to be understanding with love for fellow men and respect for law and order. I salute you my seniors and wish for each of you a world of success. 11 Our Faculty Does In Many Its Own Thing Different Ways 13 Mr. Smith coached the student drivers. Mrs. M. Askew English Mr. J. The Student Council provides for student participation in school govern- ment in an effort to establish better understanding between the faculty and students. The Council works with the com- munity as well as with the school. In the 1968-1969 school year it was successful in showering the Home for the Aged at Thanksgiving, bringing Christmas cheer to our janitorial staff, collecting one hun- dred twenty-three bags of clothing for Save the Children Federation, and con- tributing SI 36.28 to the Douglas Thomp- son Fund. National Honor Society Those students who excel academically are recognized and acclaimed upon their induction into the National Honor Society. Students who are members adopt as their motto: “We belong because we have done. We have not done merely because we belong.” Mrs. N. T. Taliaferro is sponsor. 1968-1969 Inductees (Center) JoAnn Turner, Charles Taylor, and Phyllis Woodard (Bottom, 1-r) were candidates for offices in the Southeastern District National Honor Society. Phyllis Woodard was elected secretary of this organization. The Concert Band, seated above, has won for Norcom High School the 13th consecu- tive rating of Superior in Grade VI music in EMstrict 2B of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. Twenty-seven members of the Concert Band participated in the All-Regional Band and one member participated in the All-Virginia Band. The Marching Greyhounds Band won First Place in the 1968 Junior Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade, and two First Place Awards in the Tidewater Automobile Association Safety Parade. RIGHT: Mr. Emery L. Fears, Band Director TOP RIGHT; Roland Wallace, Drum Major 30 Band And Majorettes 32 Orchestra The members of the orchestra are rewarded with the experience of learning to play a variety of good music. They are the median by which the school community is exposed to the sound of ever-growing orchestral music. They strive for perfection, having devised this motto: “Good, better, best — Never letting your instrument rest, ’til your playing is better, and your better is your best.” Directed by Mrs. Diane Chapman with Brenda Grimes as Concert Mistress and Student Conductor, the orchestra participates in the District Music Festival and the Fine Arts Festival. The group enjoys performing at other schools and in other communities. Proud of the students who were members of the All-State groups, our 60-piece symphony orchestra is composed of students from the Advanced String Class and from the Norcom High School Band. The 30-piece String Orchestra is composed only of students from the Advanced String Class and other experienced string instrument players. Brenda Grimes (Above) is Student Conductor. 35 The Modern Dance Group members have opportunity to engage in the art of free creative expression. Their motto, “Imagination is the eye of the soul ”, is tlieir inspiration to project their expres- sive talent. The Modern Dance Group per- forms for private organizations, partici- pates in the Dance Festival at Norfolk State College, and is featured in our spring Fine Arts Festival. Valeria Staton is president of the Dance Group and Shirley Sawyer is Vice President. C. Norcom Senior Chorus, di- rected by Mr. Melvin N. Lewis, sings for joy and cultural enrichment the most sat- isfying, yet most challenging music to be found. “To be better than the best” is their motto, evidenced by their excellent per- formance each year in their Christmas Con- cert, the Fine Arts Festival, and other honorable programs in which they are in- vited to perform. The officers of the choir are William Francis, president; Carolyn Clark, vice president; Evorius Mason, secretary; Vir- ginia Cook, assistant secretary; and Grace Abernathy, Arbedella Wilson, Brenda Sykes, and Stephanie Strong, librarians. Phillip McIntyre is the accompanist. 41 The 1969 I. C. Norconi Concert Choir is pictured above, having performed at the National Bellamy Award Program in Hibbing, Miniiesota, in October, and for the Choral Ambassa- dors of Holyoke High School in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in February. The superior way in which the group sang and the dignity with which the group behaved brought fame and recognition to our school and to our city. The hosts to our choir were im- pressed beyond measure and proudly established lasting friend- ships. Reginald Early (Top, far Right) poses with Mr. Lewis and his host Michael Beaudry. Michael’s return visit to Portsmouth exemplifies the many warm friendships which were created while our own choir performed for far-away admirers. Art Studies One feature of the spring Fine Arts Festival is the display of art created by our students. Through the able direction of Mr. Everett ; Winrow and Mr. Albert Eure, many gifted I student artists have brought acclaim to Nor- ; com High School after having participated and i won awards in the Portsmouth City-Wide Stu- dent Art Show, the Hallmark Greeting Card . Local and Regional Art Shows, the Ports- mouth Junior Women’s Club Art Show, and the Mid-City Sidewalk Art Show. inl I Culture Club The Culture Club (Below) sponsors each spring the Annual Fine Arts Festival which features the Concert Band, the Orchestra, the Dance Group, the Dramatics Club, the Chorus, and the student artists — groups described above and on the preceding 13 pages. The Culture Club finds it rewarding the witness a thrilling performance of art skills because, as their motto states, “The Man of Culture is the true apostle of equality.” Therefore, the Culture Club seeks to raise the culture level of all our students. Following the leadership of their president, Michael Boyd, and their sponsors, Mrs. Verdell Williamson and the Guidance Department, the Culture Club sponsors ed ucational tours, presents cultural assembly programs, attends local theatrical productions, and invites resource persons to present travelogues or provocative discussions. Other officers are Julia Barnes, vice president; Loretta Young, recording secretary; Ruby Lewis, financial secretary; Sandra Townes, chaplain; Cynthia L. Tho’ beset by barriers and hindered by fears, We ignore the detainers and encompass the best Of a world filled with values, wisdom, and tears. Where is the one star where our destiny lies Which shines forth in beauty and days filled with pride? Like legendary Ulysses with guide or steerer, We wander o’er mountain, sea, and field. Our horizon is broad, as Norcom made clearer; Our aims must be high; our hopes ever dearer. Let us be on with the task with our dreams for a shield. Just continuing to strive, to seek, and n’er to yield. 156 A Farewell To Nor com By Brenda J.
