Text from Pages 1 - 276 of the 1967 volume:

I. c. N()Rcx)M iik;ii school M k FOREWORD 1 i O ' It is spring. At every corner the heart rejoices. Memory crowds lifetimes into ill written leaflets in the book of life. The pages are turned and perhaps for an in- stance unimportant events, seemingly, are the ones most special. The completion of final exams, an exhuberating victory, the pride of personal accomplishments- -each represent some phase, some stage of maturity in the past. The torch is passed. Behind also is heartache. Remembrances of the humiliation of defeat, the disappointment of failure, or the pungent pain at the final departure of a principal, a teacher, or a friend will always bring to surface the bitter-sweet agony of sadness . Through carefully selected phrases and pictures, the ' 67 GREYHOUND attempts to rediscover and portray the truly important experiences: the ones that stimulate laugh- ter and the ones that create tears . Yet gone forever is the past. No longer can the same fierce excitement exert quite the same feeling. For every happiness has made an imprint and every tear has left a stain. Indeed the torch has passed! Behind is the now faint dimness of recollection, ahead is the luring glimmer of the future, but for today- -there will be another torch, another flame, another light- -and its brilliance shall be surpassed. 2 ' ' The Year of the Greyhound’’ Checking the absentees of the Administrative Detention List really keeps Mr, McGriff A cheerful smile from Mr. Edwards starts the day on its way. The girls are Carroll, Martel, ' Lexis, Jackie, and Barb. (STANDING) Mag, Niecie, Ronnie, Vickie, Sheryl, Linda, and Deb. (SITTING) Renee and Yvonne were absent when picture was taken. Niecie is prexy. Seeing the Golor Guard, one knows that it won ' t be long before the band comes. Love Is A Hurting Thing Growned the Eastern District and State Ghamps, our outstanding team also placed 3rd in the Nationals ! ! ! ! ! At least wait until they begin before throwing the eggs. Did she or didn ' t she? Only her photographer knew for sure. On A Clear Day You Can See Forever?? 3 A Memorable Bouquet Violets are for thoughts, they say, That ' s why these come to you today. Roses stand for love of you that your students held all the years through. Daisies for a day that ' s bright When you made everything turn out just right. Every Blue FORGET-ME-NOT Means you are Remembered always, a lot. 4 To Someone We Love Mrs. Davis and Mr. A. T. Edwards Old friends are the best. Mrs. Grace E. Davis distinguished herself as an outstanding educator in the field of English. She received her formal education from Wilberforce University. For 33 years, she dedicated her life to developing young minds here at Norcom. Mrs. Davis, for your inspiration, loyalty, devotion, and undying dedication to Norcom, the 1967 Yearbook Staff pays loving tribute to you. I will miss you all because I love you all. 5 Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Helen Cox ' ‘Only Your DEDICATION A GIANT AMONG MEN The memories of a great man- -Mr. W. E. Waters will live, In our hearts eternally as we onward move and strive. Though death took him from our presence we still esteem, His honor, wisdom, and work above all men who beam. We, the Student Body have suffered a great loss. But we are determined not to waste and toss. About our hopes in foolish vain, but to do the aim, Of education that Mr, Waters so nobly proclaimed. Yes, though he lies beneath the billows of the earth. We know that he is there with earnest worth An educator for thirty hollowed years does prove. That he indeed had a true and sincere love For his fellow man, community, and mankind But the heartfelt beliefs of a man so great still will bind The students closer to the heights of success and fame. As we all climb up the ladder a man of no impediments came. We ' ll all look up and think of our tall tall friend. Who loved education and equality to the utmost end Glimbing up the ladder of success will prove. To all that we esteem this giant among men with love His mere memories will help us to overcome. As we strive and fight to really become, A Giant in our small yet earnest ways But as our mind tends to look over it, still sways. To this old yet true saying; Only Your Best is Sufficient But well do we know that he was efficient. Enough to partake of this gold and treasure To reap his highest peak with sincere pleasure When the battle is over we ' ll be a stepping stone To the principles our dear Principal had us tone Then and only then can we really prove. That he ' s not dead . . . only resting in the bosom of love. ' 67 NORGOM GRADUATE 4 - 21-66 6 is Sufficient” A GIANT AMONG MEN Mr. William Emerson Waters Educator— 1930-1966 Principal— 1942-1966 I.C. Norcom High School ITl Fond Memories of Those We Love Will Never Die, E ' en Tho They Be Lifted Beyond the Sky. The Torch Is Passed to Mr. Albert T. Edwards Principal Mr. A. T. Edwards, our principal, has guided us through our school years with sound advice and understand- ing. Always lavish in his praise of notable accomplishments, he sets the pace for incom- parable school spirit. Never- theless, he openly frowns on the things that would detract from the school. In fair and foul weather Mr . Edwards is always ready to come to our rescue. His door is always open to all students, and his firm guidance, along with the eternal flame” of understanding which is em- bodied within him, will light the way for many in the years to come. a New Administration I Mr. John L. Me Griff Assistant Principal The primary objective of the I. C. Norcom High School is to provide the best possible program of education essen- tial to worthy membership in a democratic society. The I assistant principal has the responsibility of promoting and maintaining discipline in the school. The most desirable type is student self-discipline. This includes factors such as self-respect, respect for others, maintenance of high scholastic standards, and moral codes . The challenge is great and its success depends on the ' total cooperation of the home, the staff, and the student. ‘‘V’ Is for Versatile and Our Faculty Is .. . Miss D. Johnson, Mrs. G. This group had its birth slightly over five years ago . Since that time it has grown in size and reputation. Since its birth the orches- tra has performed during the Fine Arts Series, at commencement exercises, and at Eastern District Music Festivals. Last year the orchestra received three superior ratings for its performances of Overture to Samson (Handel). During its early years of existence the group was led by Mr. Emery Fears. Last year the reigns were passed on to Mrs. Dianne Chapman. This year the orchestra has made several appearances including one with the chorus at its annual Christmas concert. They accompanied the chorus in rendering several selections from Handels ' MESSIAH. Curtis Branch, Brenda Grimes, Patricia DeBerry, Charles Reid, and Roland Wal- lace represented the group in the newly formed All-City Orchestra which made its debut at Woodrow Wilson High School in December 1966. Gee! Don ' t they look good and they sound even better. Practice makes perfect. A elviYX When one hears the sweet and melodious voices of the I.C. Norcom Mixed Chorus, he is at once caught in The Sound of Music. The Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Melvin N. Lewis, is the finest in the state. Their music range from the Fourteenth century selections to the contemporary and popular songs. Receiving superior ratings in their district and state festivals is one of their aims and for eleven consecutive years they have been achieving this aim. The frequent morning and evening rehearsals culminate with the wonderful Christmas concert, Fine Arts concert, and other con- certs throughout the year. The Mixed Chorus provides listening pleasure on radio stations, on television stations, and on functions outside as well as within the school. This Choir is one that I.C. Norcom is proud of. Whatever job they were given they did it with their might. Most outstanding performances were rendered by the patrolmen after assemblies, at the Junior-Senior Prom, during the Fine Arts Series, at Baccalaureate and most of all, Commencement. Realizing that an organization must have a capable leader Crystal Yancey bequeaths his office of Captain to his younger brother Gilbert. Being a patrolman is not all work and no play. Chester Benton, Eugene Hairs- ton and Elijah Ross will testify to this truth as they relax after checking coats at the Junior -Senior Prom. The Intramural Staff officers Powder Puff Game of the Year 206 INTRAMURAL CREED I believe that Intramurals is a very important part of student life. For the student it is a laboratory filled with experiences where individual adjustments must be made in order to gain group approval. Educationally, it demands responses toward individuals. The intramural program provides an opportunity for social growth and de- velopment, by being a part of and con- tributing to group effort. Through self-discipline and proper self- conduct the individual participating in intramurals enhances his standing both as an individual and as a group members . The Intramural Program is one designed for self-development as well as recreational pleasure. It pro- motes the true spirit of amateur ath- letics. Students participate in an activity of their own choosing. Intramural activities combat un- desirable influences in student life by providing physical and emotional out- lets directed in constructive channels . I believe the intramural program to be a builder of spirit, mind and body through a democratic process in a time of great need. Go Harold Go!!! This year a student only needed to sell $25.00 worth of tickets to receive a free yearbook . At the close of the Patrons Contest on Novem- ber 30, 1966 only one student had gone beyond the CALL. This student is PETER SINGLETON, a member of Mr. E. Wright ' s 4B-7 homeroom section . The 1967 Yearbook Staff was pleased to award to Peter Singleton all of the door prizes the staff solicited from the merchants in Portsmouth. At the left is a picture of Curtis Branch and Leah Drake, editors- in-chief of the 1967 yearbook extending to Peter Singleton one of several gifts he won by selling the highest number of patrons in the 1966-67 Patrons Contest. ACKNOWLEDGMENT To the managers of the different stores who bought space for advertisement in our book; To each student who sold patrons tickets in our patrons contest; To all the members of the community who patronized our book; To all subscribers; The 1967 Yearbook Staff and sponsors are grateful to each of you. 238 nimnurt Expert Repair Service Any Make Radio - TV Tidewater ' s Largest Furniture Chain Guarantees Satisfaction or Your Money Back No Interest No Carrying Charges Up To 12 Months 739 High Street at Effingham Famous Brand Furniture .
