Like a richly colored flan whose bright tip draws upward, memories thrill our hearts and lift silence with boundless joy as the thirteenth year of the new Norcom ' s history, 1965-66, is enfolded in the ensuing pages of this book. Could we have spent a year more challenging -- more sublime? In the words of Dante we voice an immortal truth; Often a retrospect delights the mind. Administration Faculty 14-33 14-33 Clubs Activities 34-71 115-121 Athletics — 100-114 Advertising 210 122-209 Mrs. Rufae Cleonia J. Holmes is a native of Georgia but has spent most of her life in Virginia. She is a graduate of the high school department of Hartshorn Memorial College and earned the Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia Union University in 1930, the Master of Arts degree from Boston University. Mrs. Holmes continued her graduate studies at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Minnesota. In her professional career on the Eastern Shore and in Portsmouth, Virginia, she is respected as a dedicated teacher and supervisor. Since 1951 she has been supervisor of instruction and in personnel recruiting in the Portsmouth Public School System. The talents, interests, and contributions of Mrs. Holmes are varied. For over 30 years she has held positions of leadership in community activities and is an active worker in local and state denominational organizations. For her versatility, creativity, and devotion to many good causes, she has received national citations . In recognition of her dynamic and constructive leadership in secular and religious education Virginia Union University conferred upon Mrs. Rufae Holmes the degree of DOCTOR OF PEDAGOGY in May 1965. 4 To One Who Has Given Outstanding Services to Education, Has Served Long with Concern for Adults and Students MRS. RUFAE J. HOLMES Doctor of Pedagogy 5 MR. LYSANDER SAMPSON EVER-FLOWING MEMORIES Just as a stream flows into a river and becomes a part of it, Mr . Lysander Sampson flowed into the hearts of Nor- comites and became a part of them for seventeen delightful years as custodian and friend. Mr. Sampson is a man who devoted thirty years of service to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and still found time to come to Norcom to assist his brother, Mr. Edward Sampson. After assisting his brother, who gave some twenty-eight years of service to Norcom, Mr. Sampson continued the job of head custodian. 17 years of service When Mr. Sampson was asked why he was retiring, he replied I ' m getting old. Mr. Sampson may think he is getting old but his years spent here at Norcom will always be remembered and the memories will never grow old. Mr. Sampson relaxes at home in his easy chair enjoying his favorite cigar. His eighty years seem younger in his gait and his humor. Waters, typifies these ideal charactertistics through his administrative wisdom and concern for the youth of our nation. His administrative wisdom has served as a torch which has led Norcom through difficulties to the crest where she stands as a symbol of a carefully chosen staff, a timely and flexible curriculum, and varied, purposeful activities . His interest in the youth of the nation has served as a torch to light the way to the full utilization of the opportunities Norcom offers for the develop- ment of strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands. Mr. William E. Waters Principal Thanks to our torch -bearer, Mr. W. E. Waters . . . We, too, may serve nobly when the torch is passed. Superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools Dr. M. E. Alford lunched with Principal W. E. Waters and re- tired teachers during American Education Week, Nov. 7-13. Bearers ”I shall light a candle of understanding in thine heart, which shall not be put out . -- Apocrypha, II Esdras XIV, 25 The ’’eternal flame” of understanding carried by Mr. A. T. Edwards has enabled him to show sound judgment in his dealing with students and in performing other duties in the interest of the school . His torch has lighted the way to patience, obe- dience, sincerity, justice, wisdom, and friend- liness. These qualities embodied in our assistant principal are sought by those who aspire to greatness . Mr. Albert T. We were young and full of fun, full of joy and glee; We were like a rudderless boat in the middle of the sea. In 1963 we made a stroke toward the shores; After a year of work and toil, we ' d all become sophomores. We were growing broad in mind and growing more mature; It was due to help and guidance of our teachers I am sure. In the year of ' 64, another stroke was made; We had done our work just as we should, and made the eleventh grade. We were nearing shore and could nearly see, the path which held a sign; Becoming seniors was the only thing the juniors had in mind. In the year of ' 65, the final stroke was made; We had done our best in every class and made twelfth grade. We had stepped ashore and were following the path that meant success; We were thinking only of graduating and forgetting all the rest. And now in 1966, the best is yet to be; Will we make good of what we ' ve learned? Well you just wait and see. We ' ll do our best to make the name of Norcom stay on top; Because this class will try to be the cream of Norcom ' s crop. We leave you now dear Norcom High, with tears and heavy hearts; Our lives have been a play, and you have played the leading part. We leave you now dear Norcom High, with sorrow and regret; But yours dear Norcom is a name we never will forget. -- Melvin A. Vaughan 149 ! With him, he took his loving traits and his special grin. As we know, the Bible says love, honor, and obey. To me, this seemed to be Larry ' s purpose day after day. Yes, if there is a place for a teen, Larry will be there, next to Our King! And if there is a celestial team, Larry will be on it. LARRY DEWITT HALL He had sportsmanship, ability, but most of all school spirit. August 10, 1948 -- December 16, 1965 Can ' t you see him handling that gold and pearly ball. Gladly carrying it down the satin court at the Master ' s call? Yes, if up there, there is a team . . . I ' m sure that Larry ' s heart will gleam! Yes, if there is a Teen-age Heaven, Larry did go through . But, he won ' t stay there very long for he will graduate too! Oh yes, he must get his diploma that he ' s worked for, oh, so long. And then he ' ll move to the everlasting home, having all his work done . Yes, if there is a Teen-age Heaven, Larry did get in. And when we take our journey home. We ' ll again see this true friend! -- Amanda Battle 209 HONORARY PATRONS A Mr5. Mary Abraham Ace Shoe Repair Ser. Mrs. Dorothy Adams Mr. Mrs. Frank W. Adams Mrs. Barbara L. Yoimg Mr. GMrs. W. A. Young W. H. Young Mr. GMrs. William Young ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The 1966 yearbook staff of I.C. Norcom High School takes this opportunity to thank those persons who through their cooperation and kindness helped to make this the ninth annual of the new I.C. Norcom High School. The members of the staff wish to thank the persons of the community who patronized the 1966 NORCOMIUM by buying patron tickets; to the businessmen who purchased space for advertisements; to the photographer, Mr. John Bailey and his assistants for their patience and cooperation in working with the staff; and far from being tire least, to the student body for their participation in the patrons contest and subscriptions. The following students excelled in the senior division of the patrons contest: Clarence Charity -- 4A-6, first place; Regina Long -- 4A-3, second place; and Barbara Jones -- 4A-2, third place. (September 1965 classification). Because of the individuals mentioned above and the enthusiasm and diligence of the staff, it is hoped tlrat the 1966 NORCOMIUM will be a great success. . . And the richly colored flame will continue to burn in our hearts because the memories of the times at Norcom, like the eternal flame, are unquenchable . r Askew , Mae H.
