THE I. C. NORCOM HIGH SCHOOL PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA 1963 mQ ' fVKM 1 II 111 111 il Rk 19 m ' 1 , ■ ' lateiiiiB 1 L - ' TINE AmI ’ a. . WM ' AERIAL VIEW OF DOWNTOWN PORTSMOUTH Pictured above is our thriving fair city of 115,000 population. It is situated at the hub of Tidewater Virginia. Nestled within this fast growing city is our dear I. C. Norcom High School which was opened in 1953 at a cost of more than $2,650,000. 2 DEDICATION The unforeseen future is a maze of reckonings, crises, failures and tri- umphs . To avoid being lost in the cataclysms of life, the screening gyro- scope of education must be imbedded tenaciously in the mind. As the body develops mentally, this gyroscope will become a part of the individual. However, education is not a fortuity. It is like a tree which must have proper pruning in order to produce fruits of the highest degree. Education begins with the initiative of individuals who have a sincere desire to contribute to the betterment of humanity. In this situation, it is you, the citizens of Portsmouth, who have taken without hesitance the initial step and provided educational facilities for us, the fortu- nate students . You have given us the choice to make our lives richer and fuller. You have also presented us the gyroscope with which to guide us through life ' s rugged course and prevent us from being entrapped by ignorance which is the breeding place of heinous prejudices . It is you who have been pruners of the tree of education. Although a dedication of this yearbook to you is infinitesimal when com- pared to repayment for your zeal and uninhibited succor, we, the students of I. C. Norcom High School, in honor of our Tenth Anniversary, without a scruple, do in all integrity and sincere appreciation, dedicate the 1963 Yearbook, to you, the citizens of Portsmouth, who were concerned and have adequately equipped us for our journey onto the burning sands of life where many a stalwart foot has already dared to tread and sow a seed of hope. 3 foreword I Although the ten year history of the new I. C. Norcom High School is relatively short, the events constituting it are of such a momentous nature that these ten years, 1953- 1963, are an epoch in the history of mankind. The rate of inventions and activities of this decade is almost umbelievable . A con- ventional age of guns has suddenly whirled into a nuclear age of inter -continental ballistic missies, atomic powered submarines, and neutron bombs. Sputnik, astronaut, cosmonaut, anti-anti aircraft have entered into the modern vo- cabulary. A new President, Governor, Congress are elected. The old order changeth yielding place to new ... Everything is changing except change itself! These events also spell out a meaning for the Norcom High School graduate. This meaningful decade composing the new school ' s entire history in which the world has made a complete turnabout has thrust him vis-a-vis with a completely new world of expansion -- expansion that has been felt in the school itself when the new annex was completed in 1962 and when there was an increase in faculty, student body, and grad- uating classes. New fields and goals are opening everyday forcing the graduate to become the challengee instead of challenger. This is the history. These are the facts. Here is the world. Will the future surpass this significant decade in the history of the new I. C. Norcom High School? NORCOM SENIOR BAND MR. EMERY FEARS, CONDUCTOR At right James Royal presents a check to Bandmaster Mr. Fears to help band in its uniform drive. We were all made to feel glad when the band went over the top in its drive. But we ' ll miss those donut sales, fruitcake sales and don ' t forget the Christmas trees. And what ' s a good band without a top flight color guard? This picture was taken during a halt in the Homecom- ing activities. That line is crooked,” Mr. Fears seems to be saying as he watches band going through a routine on the practice parade field. Looking on is student Hayes Willis. I SPORTS Representing the Dramatics Club were Jo Anner Wilson, Barbara Harris, Gayle Dessaw, Joseph Mills and Ernest Brower, HOMECOMING 1962 Homecoming, 1962 turned out to be a most memorable occasion. It is amaz- ing the amount of planning and work that went into making the event a suc- cess. First there was the selection of the candidates. Then came the most difficult choice of selecting the Queen, especially after that wonderful talent shown by all of the candidates on the talent program. Floats were made and the parade got underway. On the big night, lovely Margery Atkins was crowned Miss Homecoming and the cheering throng urged Norcom to victory over Mary N. Smith High School. BEHOLD THE ROYAL COURT! ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The 1963 Greyhound, which serves as a record of the school ' s accomplishments in the past year, is also the product of those who rendered their services unselfishly. Only through their zealous efforts has this yearbook been made possible. For this we are greatly indebted to: our instructors who have willingly and without restraint given their valuable time and priceless guidance; businessmen who showed their faith and support by purchasing advertisements; the photographers who made words into pictures; the faculty, patrons, student body and community who played their indispensable roles superbly in the production of the 1963 yearbook. Special thanks goes to the following students who succeeded in obtaining the large number of patrons and the ads: Ora Brown, Robert Jones, Joyce Harrison, Lawrence Owes, Gwendolyn Salley, Marjorie Spencer, Shirley ' Moore, Eloise Johnson and Linda Gooke. no V eAre Grateful For Your . . .
