You have exemplified a degree of intel- ligence in that you have seen the need to complete your high school education. We regret that a number of your former classmates were not as mature in their thinking. We hope that you will continue your education in the field of your choice, so that you will be better able to do something for your community, state and nation as a successful citizen. Never let any obstacle, no matter how great, deter you from your goal. Your contributions to the life of Norcom have been many. You have brought many honors to your school. Mr. W. E. Waters, Principal A A.B. , A.M. Lincoln University, Columbia University Seniors I Salute You ! Four years have passed since you entered the halls of I. C. Norcom. Many things have happened, some good, some bad, some things to remember, others to forget, but all of these situations become experience--pleasant or unpleasant. As your principal, I am not so concerned with the lighter side of your high school experience. I am questioning myself in an evaluative sense, and I become suddenly afraid that someone here may have failed you, not intention- ally, but because of circumstances; and, you are now ready to leave us and I wonder if you have the tools, the know-how, the motivation, the ambition to go forth, unafraid, to further training in college of the Armed Forces, to a job, or into the world to find yourself. As we reflect, you have been here at a profitable time, for these years between 1956 and 1961 have been years of re-examination and redirection of the school program to meet the urgent new demands of our time. Our concerns have been with content, methodology, purpose and philosophy as they affect youth. We have sought to identify the talented, stimulate the slow, and inspire all to rededicate themselves to a deeper understanding of the meaning of democracy — its guarantees and its misuse in the hands to the people who misinterpret it. My dear boys and girls, these are perilous times, and you should live in these times with a seriousness of purpose which these times demand. Youth today must prepare to cope with a more complicated world tomorrow. You face innumerable challenges--challenges of intergration, new employment opportunities, better housing, higher educa- tion, longevity, stabilized marriage, juvenile delinquency, alcoholism, dope addiction and racial discrimination. The greatest challenge to each of you today is to begin a program of self-discipline, which will begin with faith in yourselves, so that you will work to become all that God would have you become. Dr. Rollin S. Burhams, President of Kentucky Southern College, Louisville, Kentucky, once spoke to a group of young people like you, and he began-- God said, ' Give me your life, and I will make it a spade to dig the found- ations of a new world, a crow-bar to pry loose the rocks, a hoe to mix sand and cement, a trowel to bind stone and make them a wall. For man without God, is a b ubble in an ocean, a single grain of sand on an infinite beach. God without man is mind without tonge, or eyes or hands, or fingers or feet. But God and Man together- -they are such power as not all the atoms of all creation can match. ' If you are to succeed, you must respect yourself, not because of present achievement, but because you have been the recipient of so much from your parents, teachers, and citizens in your town, state, and nation. Our school system, our freedoms we enjoy, including the right to vote, have been bought by the toil, sweat, and blood of our predecessors. You will repay this kind of debt by giving the world your best — your best in ideas, intellectual achievement, in moral and spiritual advancement. It is through this kind of discipline that causes are advanced victories won and races move forward. Longfellow has left us the secret :-- Look not mournfully to the past--it comes not back again; wisely improve the present--it is thine; go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear, and with a manly heart.
