The Greyhound I. C. Norcom High School Portsmouth, Virginia 1961 PUBLISHED BY THE JOURNALISM CLASSES SPONSORED BY THE SENIOR CLASSES PORTS MCUPm 1C UBRARY PORTSMOUTH. VIRGINIA 7 Foreword In a time of human conflict that characterizes idealogy against idealogy; igno- rance against enlightment and fabrication against truth, the graduates of 1960-61 have undertaken a tremendous responsibility as they go into the world hoping that they will be able to alleviate some of its conditions. The graduates should realize that such a task could not be accomplished without education, because it is the key to all endeavors. We must strive to develop our poten- tials to their fullest extent and by so doing equip ourselves for the work ahead. Wher- ever great minds have penetrated, the results have been progress. All of us as gradu- ates must be cognizant of the fact that the purpose of education is not only to develop our minds, but to instill within our being a modified behavior. While at Norcom, the graduates had at their disposal many avenues of human motivation and should approach their tasks with vigorous anticipation, in hope that their campaign will be a victorious one. The yearbook staff has worked diligently to produce this yearbook. It is but our h ope that it will be interesting as well as intellectual. The time will come when all of us will want to recapture the memories and activ- ities that comprised our high school life. In a moment of solitude, we shall relinquish our thoughts of the present and turn our thoughts upon the past. This yearbook is so arranged to give a more vivid picture of past events. 2 The Staff at Work! Directory 4 Dedication In appreciation of their many excellent contributions to our education, happiness and welfare, throughout our school life and home life, we, the Class of 1961, dedicate our yearbook to you our deserving and wonderful parents. Had it not been for your encouragement, your interest, and your help, we would not have made the strides and crossed one of the seas to the island of education. To many this may be a final point, but to others, completion of high school will be an inspiration to go on. We realize that it wasn ' t an easy task but a difficult and sometimes discouraging problem. Remember, we the class of 1961 appreciate your efforts and love you. All we can say is Thank you, thank you, and thank you again, for you were and still are our guiding light. 5 Mr. W. E. Waters, Principal A A.B. , A.M. Lincoln University, Columbia University Seniors I Salute You ! Four years have passed since you entered the halls of I. C. Norcom. Many things have happened, some good, some bad, some things to remember, others to forget, but all of these situations become experience--pleasant or unpleasant. As your principal, I am not so concerned with the lighter side of your high school experience. I am questioning myself in an evaluative sense, and I become suddenly afraid that someone here may have failed you, not intention- ally, but because of circumstances; and, you are now ready to leave us and I wonder if you have the tools, the know-how, the motivation, the ambition to go forth, unafraid, to further training in college of the Armed Forces, to a job, or into the world to find yourself. As we reflect, you have been here at a profitable time, for these years between 1956 and 1961 have been years of re-examination and redirection of the school program to meet the urgent new demands of our time. Our concerns have been with content, methodology, purpose and philosophy as they affect youth. We have sought to identify the talented, stimulate the slow, and inspire all to rededicate themselves to a deeper understanding of the meaning of democracy — its guarantees and its misuse in the hands to the people who misinterpret it. My dear boys and girls, these are perilous times, and you should live in these times with a seriousness of purpose which these times demand. Youth today must prepare to cope with a more complicated world tomorrow. You face innumerable challenges--challenges of intergration, new employment opportunities, better housing, higher educa- tion, longevity, stabilized marriage, juvenile delinquency, alcoholism, dope addiction and racial discrimination. The greatest challenge to each of you today is to begin a program of self-discipline, which will begin with faith in yourselves, so that you will work to become all that God would have you become. Dr. Rollin S. Burhams, President of Kentucky Southern College, Louisville, Kentucky, once spoke to a group of young people like you, and he began-- God said, ' Give me your life, and I will make it a spade to dig the found- ations of a new world, a crow-bar to pry loose the rocks, a hoe to mix sand and cement, a trowel to bind stone and make them a wall. For man without God, is a b ubble in an ocean, a single grain of sand on an infinite beach. God without man is mind without tonge, or eyes or hands, or fingers or feet. But God and Man together- -they are such power as not all the atoms of all creation can match. ' If you are to succeed, you must respect yourself, not because of present achievement, but because you have been the recipient of so much from your parents, teachers, and citizens in your town, state, and nation. Our school system, our freedoms we enjoy, including the right to vote, have been bought by the toil, sweat, and blood of our predecessors. You will repay this kind of debt by giving the world your best — your best in ideas, intellectual achievement, in moral and spiritual advancement. It is through this kind of discipline that causes are advanced victories won and races move forward. Longfellow has left us the secret :-- Look not mournfully to the past--it comes not back again; wisely improve the present--it is thine; go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear, and with a manly heart. W. E. Waters, Principal 6 Congratulations! Mr. A. T. Edwards, Assistant Principal B.S., M.S. Hampton Institute --Cornell University Congratulations to the graduates of 1961! You have exemplified a degree of intel- ligence in that you have seen the need to complete your high school education. We regret that a number of your former classmates were not as mature in their thinking. We hope that you will continue your education in the field of your choice, so that you will be better able to do something for your community, state and nation as a successful citizen. Never let any obstacle, no matter how great, deter you from your goal. Your contributions to the life of Norcom have been many. You have brought many honors to your school. For all you have done, we thank you, and wish for you the best in life. Mr. A. T. Edwards 7 Mr. Alf J. Mapp Superintendent of Schools Mr. L. W. Futrell Dr. M. Kise Mr. T. Schneider Mr. J. H. Norcom ' s proudest possessions is its 105-unit band which is under the direction of Mr. Emery Fears, known by his students as the Mad Musician. The band has won four con secutive superior ratings at the Regional District Festival for Band. The band is divided into two sections: (1) marching band and (2) symphonic band. According to the many hours of practice which they put in, our band seemingly realizes that their goals can be achieved only as a result of 99 70 perspiration and °]o inspiration.” Our chorus practices the ideal that music is the universal language. The choir, under the direction of Mr. Melvin Lewis, is a very active and successful organization. The choir works very hard in order to present the number and caliber of perfor- mances. For the success of this group, work is the key. he Future Business Leaders of America President, Brenda Burden Vice President, Geraldine Jones Secretary, Doris Boone Ass ' t. MAGGIE WALKER 6-0 The Greyhounds ' powerful defense wouldn ' t bulge an inch as Norcom rolled over Maggie Walker 6-0 in Rich- mond on September 16. Robert Eley an outstanding defensive player recovered a fumble and scampered over for the only touchdown of the contest. ADDISON 21-6 In the first home game on September 22, the powerful Greyhounds displayed both offensive and defensive strength as they routed Addison of Roanoke 21-6. PHENIX 27-0 In posting the second of a series of shutouts the Greyhounds sent Phenix back to Hampton carrying a 27-0 defeat. The game was played on October 13 before hundreds of football fans. CRESTWOOD 20-0 Facing a tough Crestwood eleven the Greyhounds were held to a 0-0 tie. But after half-time the visitors cut loose on the Crestwood team and defeated them 20-0. The game on October 21, was Crestwood ' s homecoming. CARVER 6-0 On October 27, the now high rolling Greyhounds defeated a stubborn eleven Carver of South Norfolk 6-0. HUNTINGTON 6-0 On November 4, the Greyhounds journeyed to Newport News and defeated the always dangerous Huntington Vikings 6-0. Both teams displayed good defense. Norcom ' s touchdown came on a 35-yard pass run play from quarterback Leslie Harding to end Robert Windley. WARWICK 7-7 On November 11, the Greyhounds traveled to Newport News for the second week in a row and tied Carver of Newport News (Warwick) 7-7. In the last minutes of the game the Greyhounds were within 12 inches of scoring a second touchdown but time ran out. The Greyhounds ' touchdown came on a 36-yard play from quarterback Harding to fullback Richard Smith. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON 6-0 The 1959 version of the I. C. Norcom football team defeated Booker T.
