Mr. W.E. Waters, A.B., A.M. Lincoln University Columbia University CONGRATULATIONS! from the Principal It is so difficult to speak in these days of world tension, national confusion, racial conflicts and human dis- trust. Yet, it is because of these frustrations that we must speak. The act of becoming educated is a very real thing in the year 1960. It includes reading, writing and arithmetic, but it also includes dressing properly, walking and sitting correctly, familiarizing one ' s self with outstanding operas, plays on broadway, Hollywood Greats, enriching one ' s life with good books, travel and the breadth and depih one gets from association with other people. Really, we have listed ingredients so necessary to personal growth and or improvement, but there must be general acceptance of the idea that each person will embrace these on the basis of his capacity to achieve and to profit from opportunities surrounding him. This is the year for stopping, studying, and seeing ourselves in light of the role each of us is expected to take. Too many valuable hours have been wasted by us from grades 1-12. There will have to be greater cooperation between school and home - parents and teachers so that pupils from the start will have the study habits necessary to progress. There will also have to be an eagerness on the part of each child to take his place in this human race; there will have to be a greater desire on part of all to take advan- tage of the offering of each community and society; there must be greater effort to maintain and extend the things learned from year to year; there must be a oneness of soul and mind as we overcome the obstacles which beset us daily. We must lift as we climb. To begin, is not enough. We must forge ahead if we are to win. Showing effort is only one part of the struggle but improving the quality of our striving is the ingredient which will insure success. This seems to be the year of doubt and indecision - it may be the year of crisis - if so - you, my Seniors, will be an important part of it. Are you prepared to meet the challenge? Have you taken advantage of every opportunity to improve yourselves while here in I. C. Norcom? Have you leaned heavily on research for your answers? Have you taken time out for expermentation in order to find answers? Have you learned how to become a critical thinker? Have you dared to be creative? Have you sought spiritual guidance in order that your academic and moral disciplines might meld and leave you with deeper insight and higher goals? We have tried to offer a broad program here so that you will be able to cope with many of life ' s complex pro- blems on a basis of your individual ability to comprehend, adjust, and move forward. This is just the beginning - the long road is ahead. How you will travel it will depend on you - your sincerity of purpose, devotion to duty, personal enthusiasm, continued willingness to learn and alliance with the cause of justice, peace and brotherhood. No earthly being can force me to be false to my principles, or to be blind to the beauty of the universe, or to be gloomy, or to be irritable, or to complain against my lot. Cheerfulness, kindliness, and honest thinking are all within the department of the brain. And my brain is disciplined, and I will discipline it more and more as the days pass. From The Human Macliine By Arnold Bennett
