THE GREYHOUND I. C. NORCOM HIGH SCHOOL PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA 1960 PUBLISHED BY: THE JOUBNALISM CLASSES And SPONSORED BY: THE SENIOR CLASSES PORTSMOUfH PU5LIC 03RARY PORTSMOUfH, VIRGINIA FOREWORD In this modern and scientific era, it is vitally important that we exercise our potentials to the utmost. Today, there is a demand for brilliant young minds in many fields. Present day students have such opportunities that it seems almost impossible that our country would have a lack of so many competent persons especially in the field of science. But we haven’t lost all hopes yet. Perhaps somewhere in this book between the classes of ’60 and ’63 there will be found a worker or designer of some of our most internationally known mis- siles and scientific developments. We do hope that students today are taking their subject mat- ter seriously. It is imperative that our young minds be fully devel- oped rather than let a lack of ambition prove detrimental to our society. For the classes of ’61, ’62, and ’63, it means a continuation of secondary work. So make those years successful ones. For the class of 1960, high school is but an image in the past and a recollection of many high school activities that we do not want to forget so readily. In order that all of us at Norcom may recall the 1960 activi- ties in later years, the yearbook staff has worked diligently, hoping to make these activities pleasant memories. This memory book contains information from the first kick- off at Portsmouth Stadium on September 12th, when the Mighty” Greyhounds defeated East Suffolk 27-0, ’til the glorious June night of graduation. With sincere gratitude to everyone who aided us, the year- book staff sincerely hopes that you will consider this book of mem- ories a total success. SEPTEMBER ‘til JUNE at • • • • ALMA MATER SONG For you, dear Norcom, we declare A love that’s ever true, Allegiance, Alma Mater dear We justly swear to you. Deep in our hearts you hold a place No other school can hold. Forever and a day we’re yours. Yes, yours a thousand- fold. Instructions you have given us; From us they’ll ne’er depart. Intelligent you’ll make us all. To love you teach the heart. To set our ideals high, you say. Will make us a success. Our training all we owe to you. The school that we love best. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH MAY APRIL • • • • and then JUNE DEDICATION MR. W. E. WATERS Because Norcom is developing culturally and educationally as an admired institution, we the 1960 graduating class decided carefully on its most in- fluential supporter. We found one who, during good times or chaos, has shielded Norcom by his gui- dance and instructions. We were inspired to achieve by watching him cling to tenacity and sagacity during the past chal- lengingyears. We copied reverence, compassion, and perfection from him. We realized that our ra- pid growth was a result of his many contributions. His interest in youth was known by us, and was re- flected through an invitation extended him recently to attend President Eisenhower’s White House Con- ference on Children and Youth. Realizing our great fortune in having this per- son as our leader, we are attempting to show our appreciation in a small way. To our able principal, Mr. William E. Waters, we gratefully dedicate this annual. YEARBOOK STAFF Editor-in-Chief .... Associate Editors . . Literary Editor . . . . Copy Editor Production Editors . Lincoln University Columbia University CONGRATULATIONS! from the Principal It is so difficult to speak in these days of world tension, national confusion, racial conflicts and human dis- trust. Yet, it is because of these frustrations that we must speak. The act of becoming educated is a very real thing in the year 1960. It includes reading, writing and arithmetic, but it also includes dressing properly, walking and sitting correctly, familiarizing one ' s self with outstanding operas, plays on broadway, Hollywood Greats, enriching one ' s life with good books, travel and the breadth and depih one gets from association with other people. Really, we have listed ingredients so necessary to personal growth and or improvement, but there must be general acceptance of the idea that each person will embrace these on the basis of his capacity to achieve and to profit from opportunities surrounding him. This is the year for stopping, studying, and seeing ourselves in light of the role each of us is expected to take. Too many valuable hours have been wasted by us from grades 1-12. There will have to be greater cooperation between school and home - parents and teachers so that pupils from the start will have the study habits necessary to progress. There will also have to be an eagerness on the part of each child to take his place in this human race; there will have to be a greater desire on part of all to take advan- tage of the offering of each community and society; there must be greater effort to maintain and extend the things learned from year to year; there must be a oneness of soul and mind as we overcome the obstacles which beset us daily. We must lift as we climb. To begin, is not enough. We must forge ahead if we are to win. Showing effort is only one part of the struggle but improving the quality of our striving is the ingredient which will insure success. This seems to be the year of doubt and indecision - it may be the year of crisis - if so - you, my Seniors, will be an important part of it. Are you prepared to meet the challenge? Have you taken advantage of every opportunity to improve yourselves while here in I. C. Norcom? Have you leaned heavily on research for your answers? Have you taken time out for expermentation in order to find answers? Have you learned how to become a critical thinker? Have you dared to be creative? Have you sought spiritual guidance in order that your academic and moral disciplines might meld and leave you with deeper insight and higher goals? We have tried to offer a broad program here so that you will be able to cope with many of life ' s complex pro- blems on a basis of your individual ability to comprehend, adjust, and move forward. This is just the beginning - the long road is ahead. How you will travel it will depend on you - your sincerity of purpose, devotion to duty, personal enthusiasm, continued willingness to learn and alliance with the cause of justice, peace and brotherhood. No earthly being can force me to be false to my principles, or to be blind to the beauty of the universe, or to be gloomy, or to be irritable, or to complain against my lot. Cheerfulness, kindliness, and honest thinking are all within the department of the brain. And my brain is disciplined, and I will discipline it more and more as the days pass. From The Human Macliine By Arnold Bennett Mr. A.T. Edwards, B.S., M.S. Hampton Institute Cornell University CONGRATULATIONS! To the graduating classes of January and June 1960, a fond fare- well with a degree of sadness. We feel happy for you because you have reached another milestone in development toward your life’s goal, but we are filled with mixed emotions when we think of losing your active participation in things great in the life of Norcom High School. You have given your school fine leadership. You have been re- sponsible for many worthwhile activities and contributions which you will appreciate more and more as time passes on. Your contributions have been many toward the honors gained in dramatics, choral and band appearances and festivals in the past four years. You have con- tributed toward one State V. I. A. football championship, three State and one C.I. A.A. high school track championships, two district basketball championships and, too numerous to enumerate, first and runner-up spots in the Penn Relays, Journal and Guide Meet, and tennis and baseball. It is a pleasure to congratulate you and wish for you a successful life in the future. A. T. Teachers, school, administration All-we presently adore. Forget them in the future? If possible, we’ll love them more! They emphasize book-learning Far beyond a doubt; But guidance, culture and pride Could never be left out. Preparing us for the future Has long been their foremost aim. Just allow us the chance to thank you; You’ll know it wasn’t in vain. When we were some four years younger We heard very wise men say, Give the best that you have to Norcom, In the end, there’s a glorious day. So working and striving in every channel Having clean fun too; God guided us to much success. Not a part, but all the way through. Now from our dear Alma Mater We must surely depart; But an institution like Norcom Never leaves an individaul’s heart. Gratefully considering our leaders At this time we say good-bye But stopping to thank Someone above Who is much Greater than you or I. Alexander, Antony B. Spike Ambition: Education Allen, Shirley M.
