Norcom High School and Sponsored by the February Graduating Class Foreword Here compiled and presented are memories of our Senior year 1947-1948 at Norcom High School. We are grateful to the Faculty who taught us, to the student body who supported us, and to our Alma Mater who made us what We are. Though geniuses none of us are, We have worked hard to make our Annual a great success. When the present has become our glorious past, and the future shall have poured out its bountiful blessings and manifold suc- cesses upon us, we shall have only to look at the printed pages of the Norcomium to find the deeds Wrought in our early careers which paved the road to the heights then achieved. You can never know the admiration and affection that we have for you, and we can never repay you for your long service. Because you loved us, we have much achieved, Had you despised us, then we must have failedg But since we knew you trusted and believed, We could not disappoint you, so prevailed. L L , CLARENCE SIMPSON Faculty Advisors of The Norcomium MRS. R. P. CHAPMAN MRS. V. S. KNIGHT Our Prmcipal MR. W. E. WATERS, A.B., A.M. Lincoln University, Columbia University Five years ago, to the principalship of I. C. Norcom High School, came one whose ability has astonished many a person,-our respected Principal, Nlr. VV. E. Waters. Calm, gentle, but above all, stern, ready at all times with needed counsel, he has truly been the guardian of our way. Of course, at times he was compelled to be harsh, but this was to be expected, since we, ourselves, could not be considered angels. Oft times when the way seemed rough and hard, and disappointment seemed the only reward for our -labor, we sought hirn out, and re- ceived consolation and encouragement. As an inspiration through the years at Norcom, our Principal has not failed us. When on life's rugged road, we have only to turn back our mental clocks to hear again the words he has so often uttered :- A satisfied flower is one whose petals are about to fall. The most beautiful rose is hardly more than a bud wherein the pangs and ecstasy of desire are striving for a bigger and better growth. 1 Mas. LAVINIA M. VVEAVER, Assistant Principal To Mrs. Weaver liver loyal, ever true to the task she has to do. These words littingly describe our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Lavinia M. Weaver. As graduating Seniors, We feel that We owe her inexpressible honor, respect and gratitude for the part she has played in helping us to achieve our great- est aims. To I. C. Norcom High School she is as a mother is to the home. Truthfully, we have found Mrs. VVeaver a capable, resourceful, sympathetic leader,-one of the llowers that make pleasant our journey in life. Treayurgr MOTTOg The Future if Ourf, not Fate'.r COLORS: Navy Blue and Yello-ao FLOWER: Yellow Carnation History of the Class of '48 On the first day of February in the year of Our Lord nineteen hundred and forty-four, we, the graduating Seniors, crossed the threshold of I. C. Norcom High School. Very much aware of the difficulties to be faced, we came in with a proud, shy admiration of the things about us. We can still hear the roar of Mr. Waters' voice- You go to Mrs. Moultrieis room,-you go to Mr. McGriff,-you go with Mr. Cuffey, and you go to Mrs. Chapman's roomf' There were four classes of Fresh- men then, but because of failures and other handicaps, we are but two classes in our senior year. We have labored hard to do the right things and to keep high the standards of I. C. Norcom, and to do nothing to bring shame to our Alma Mater. In all activi- ties, our classes have come out victorious. Mrs. Moultrie was one of our home teachers for three years, but in our fourth year she left us for a while. Her class was turned over to Mrs. Knight, who, with Mrs. R. P. Chapman, sponsors our class. Both have been like mothers to us, guiding their children, proud as we were when some one of us performed an outstanding feat, ready to lend a hand when we were in distress, and watchful to see that no one should take an unfair advantage of us. Next to Mrs. Chapman and Mrs. Knight, our English teacher, Mrs. M. S. Vick has done most to influence our lives. With her teaching on the every day concep- tions of life, she has brightened our outlook upon the future and broadened our thoughts in a world-wise sense. So, now we are again passing through the portals of Norcom-on our way out into the future,-into the unknown, but not shy and skeptical. We go out brave and certain, because we know, in general, what we will find, and what to expect. Class Song QTUNE- Lullaby l Fare thee well, Norcom High, It's time to say Good--bye We will miss you every day, You have helped us on our way. We give thanks to our friends, With this rite, school days end. Faith enshrined in our hearts, Sadness, too, as we part. II. Teachers, friends, parents, too Have all seen us through. Our task, just begun, For our high school days are done. God's world of toil and strife Is the road that leads to life. To obey, we're compelled, So dear Norcom,-farewell. QWRITTEN BY LITA JOHNSON, Class Poem KBY ALICE BAKER, We bid farewell to you, O Norcom High, 'Tis time for us to say a sad Good-bye Our heavy hearts deplore that luckless scene. Our minds disturbed, our feeling still serene. The love we-have for you can't be explained, It seeps its roots into your vast domain. 'Tis you who judge how wide our limits be, O Norcom High. The school so dear to me. II. How often have we blessed this coming day. Our debt to you in deeds we gladly pay. The simple blessings from 'your lowly heart Shall live with us long after we depart. Eternal knowledge blossoms from your help As we retrace our learning, step by step. But if our voices break, we'll gladly sigh Oh, how we love you, I. C. Norcom High. III. To you, our hearts, our love, our griefs are given. The thought of you will rest with us in heaven. Contented are our minds, our hearts are yearnin For you who taught us everything in learning, The deep prophetic fullness of your strength. 8 Praise be ye, Norcomv are our words at length, But now it seems we have to say Good-bye Dear Alma Mater,-I.
