DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES -— Sy YG ” Gs DR. RONALD ALLEN HAMILTON Dr. Ron Hamilton has achieved nation-wide renown as “Patch the Pirate”. His ministry through records and tapes has literally blessed the lives of tens of thou- sands of children across the country. Dr. Hamilton blessed the assemblage at gradu- ation by singing a song, “Rejoice in the Lord.” He has been a blessing to the Hyles- Anderson student body through his speaking on the subject of the right type of music. We are thankful for Dr. Hamilton and his influence on Hyles-Anderson Col- lege and America. Ronald Allen Hamilton graduated from Bob Jones University with a Bachelor’s degree in sacred music in 1973 and a Master’s degree in 1975. He taught at the university from 1973 until 1978, when he resigned to enter a full-time ministry of music and preaching to fundamental churches. In the spring of 1978, Dr. Hamilton discovered he had cancer, and his left eye was removed. Through this experience and subsequent events, God led him into a ministry of children’s music as “Patch the Pirate.” In this role, he has completed six “Patch the Pirate” recordings which have become synonymous with children’s music in fundamental churches. He also wrote the song, “Rejoice in the Lord,” which is the title song of his weekly nation-wide broadcast. Dr. Hamilton says, “God took my left eye due to cancer and gave me a worldwide ministry.” aa Graduation — 243

JOSEPH DAVID COMBS The Honorary Doctorate program was a special one to the students of Hyles- Anderson College because of the four men that we honored. One was especially our own. That man was Joe Combs. Dr. Combs has taught at Hyles-Anderson College for 13 years. His insight for Bible teaching has had a major impact on all students who have sat under his tutelage and been willing to learn. It was truly a special night to see Dr. Combs honored by his receiving the Doctor of Divinity degree. Joseph David Combs was saved at nine years of age and called to preach at the age of eleven. After graduating from college, he pastored briefly and then came to the Bible faculty of Hyles-Anderson College. During this time, he has had an exten- sive ministry preaching across America in churches, colleges, and Bible confer- ences. He has a tape club for those who subscribe to his sermons. He has written study guides for many books of the Bible and a Wisdom Manual, which is a collec- tion of writings on Biblical principles. In the coming months, Dr. Combs will be founding a new church near St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida. 242 — Graduation

a a a een —————————— — —— — —— — ——== 244 — Graduation DOCTOR OF DIVINITY DR. THOMAS LESLIE HOBBINS, SR. Dr. Les Hobbins has been a close friend of Hyles-Anderson College for many years. Dr. Hobbins has pastored for over a decade in the Toledo, Ohio, area at the Lewis Avenue Baptist Church. He has been responsible for seeing scores of changed lives and hundreds of people brought to Christ during his tenure there. Dr. Hobbins is a true friend of Hyles-Anderson College. Thomas Leslie Hobbins was saved at fourteen years of age at a youth meeting in London, Ontario, Canada. He received a Bachelor’s degree from a Bible college, and later a Master of Divinity degree from seminary, where he received an award for excellence in preaching. During his ministry, he has pastored four churches — two of which were located in Canada. For the past fifteen years, Dr. Hobbins has pas- tored the Lewis Avenue Baptist Church. The church is located on twenty-five acres of land in Temperance, Michigan, which is a suburb of the greater Toledo, Ohio, metropolitan area. The church maintains an attendance of over 500. They have had a high day of over 3,000 in attendance. The church land and building are valued at $2 million.
