We hope to show the spirit of fun, excitement, competition, companionship, serenity, and meditation at our school but, most of all, to show a place that has the Spirit of hy Lord. MRS. JUDSON MITCHELL “And of some have compassion, making a difference.” Jude vs. 22 Judson and Vicki Mitchell and family, Yvonne, 11, Jack, 7, Belinda, 5 and Joey, 3 Judson and Vicki Mitchell have labored at Hyles-Anderson Col- lege for a total of 17 years. When one thinks of a person who cares and is concerned about the individual welfare of a student, the name Judson Mitchell immediately comes to mind. Brother Mitchell’s empathy and concern is so evident in each and every aspect of his life. Whether Brother Mitchell is counselling, teach- ing, or just passing in the hallway, his friendly smile and cheerful, “hello,” constantly act as a joy-creating device. Mrs. Mitchell has been a testimony to the students of Hyles- Anderson through her example of how a Christian ought to act even while going through a serious health problem. The Mitchells have come to symbolize what Hyles-Anderson is all about in many ways. We thank them for their years of service as we proudly dedi- cate the 1986 Caber to Mr. and Mrs. Judson Mitchell. It is our time of laugh- ter, it is also our time of tears. It is our time of growth, and it is also our time for retrospection. Chapel is the heart- beat of Hyles-Anderson College and while the memories of speakers will al- ways come to mind, there are other memories th at one can’t help but reflect on when chapel is mentioned. These pictures bring back a few of the mo- ments from the 1985-86 chapel hour. Top center: Dr. Hyles falls back on Dr. Evans for support before a barrage of paper airplanes and beach balls. Dr. Roberson Dr. Lee Roberson is a true hero to the students of Hyles-Anderson College. Dr. Roberson, who for over four dec- ades has ministered at the great High- land Park Baptist Church and Tennes- see Temple University, was the speaker for two days this spring. Dr. Roberson’s preaching and teaching, and especially his life serve as a testimonial to each of us of how God can use a man who is pliable in the Lord’s hands. It was a great privilege to also be able to honor Mrs. Roberson who was here with Dr. Roberson for those two special days. “Ever Forward, Backward Never” 134 — Chapel Dr. Faulkner Dr. Faulkner was another honored guest for the Hyles-Anderson student body. Dr. Faulkner, who served with Dr. Roberson for over four decades, spoke from his heart on success in the Christian life. This potpourri of accu- mulated wisdom that has been amassed over the decades will undoubtedly prove to be invaluable for each of us. One of the highlights of Dr. Faulk- ner’s visit to Hyles-Anderson College was to hear him lead the congregation in a song. His vibrancy and love for the Lord was clearly evident to the student body as they were singing. Dr. Faulkner has become the arche- type second man for assistant pastors all across America. He is a stirring ex- ample of what our preacher boys should strive for in their service to other men. It is indeed a privilege to honor this great man of God here at Hyles-Ander- son College. “A Real American Hero” Chapel — 135 Top: Ron and his wife Shelly sing a duet. But while most folk’s conception of chapel entails just music and preaching, at Hyles-Anderson College this is not the case. The Activities Department often livens up our chapel services with tre- mendous skits. These skits range from lip-syncing famous gospel quartet num- bers to the adventures of Super Chris- tian and the Lone Soul Winner. LADIES’ SPLIT CHAPEL Split chapel is something that occurs on a monthly basis and that has come to have a special meaning for Hyles- Anderson College students. In many ways, its caring spirit echoes the feel- ings of the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women. For the men, special Gospel quartet- like music and hard preaching charac- terize split chapel more than any other one thing. For the ladies, the different themes of each split chapel are aimed at helping a certain area in their lives. Mrs. Evans was usually the special speaker. In the men’s split chapel ser- vices, Dr. Jorgensen and Dean Weaver directed the proceedings. Both of these men became surrogate fathers to many Hyles-Anderson dorm men. Although these were times of scath- ing and sorrow, there were also times of joy and rejoicing. As we reflect back, we can’t help but be thankful for the spe- cial time that is called split chapel. The church is of paramount importance in the life of the Hyles-Anderson student. The college, despite its size and reputa- tion, is merely one of the integral parts of the First Baptist Church ministry. Seen on this page, the major portions of a day in the life of First Baptist Church are clearly evident. From the special music to Dr. Hyles’ preaching and on to the inevitable blessings of baptism, the ministry of the New Testament church is echoed in this great ministry. Activities — 155 om FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH As we reflect back on our time at First Baptist Church, the most memo- rable thing that comes to our minds is the invitation. As the massive crowd bowed in prayer, Dr. Hyles would ask for those who wanted to make a deci- sion to raise their hand. After this, there would be an inevitable stream to- ward the aisles where scores and some- times hundreds of people would gather towards the front of the auditorium to be greeted by personal workers like Mr. Nischik, Dr. Jorgensen, and the pasto- ral staff. 156 — Activities After the decisions were made and the converts were dealt with, Mr. McKinney would organize the slips and hand them to Dr. Hyles who would then read them and recognize -the decisions that were made. Due to the fact that Hyles-Anderson students were visiting on bus routes and heavily involved in the Spring Program on Easter Sunday, Dr. Hyles decided to do a very special thing this year, and that was to have Easter Sunday on a Wednesday at Hyles-Anderson College. This day was complete with an Easter service in the chapel. The chapel was set up exactly as an Easter Sunday ser- vice at the First Baptist Church. This included two specials, standing for the reading of the Scriptures, and even Kas- ter lilies in front of the auditorium. After the chapel service, the students went over to the dining hall where a giant turkey dinner was served. This included turkey and dressing, yams with marshmallows, and a large piece of pumpkin pie. After the meal was over there was a giant Easter egg hunt with five thousand Easter eggs scattered across the campus by faculty and staff. Over five hundred students at Hyles-Anderson | are in the work scholarship program. It ‘ is impossible to be at Hyles-Anderson College without having one’s life effect- ' ed by the efforts of the many who are i on work scholarship. As your day be- gins in the morning and as you step outside a dormitory, the floors and win- dows have been cleaned by scholarship students. As you go to the dining hall, the bakery girls prepare the cinnamon rolls for breakfast. The cooks prepare the rest of the breakfast. The waitresses serve. And, of course, the custodians have helped clean the dining hall prior to your coming. After leaving there and going to the classroom, one can’t help but notice the trash has been emptied and the blackboards have been cleaned. | Once again, by the work scholarship students. Other areas of your life are inevitably effected, such as the activi- ties’ program put on by the Activities Department each Friday and Saturday night. Miss Hylander And Mr. Hylander Carolann Yoshida Kevin Albert The outstanding honor bestowed by Hyles-Anderson College is that of Mr. Hylander and Miss Hylander. The two recipients this year have certainly lived lives that have been beyond reproach. These brief summaries of their lives here at Hyles-Anderson will help to give you a picture of two people who are truly dedicated and sold out. We honor Carolann Yoshida and Kevin Albert for this outstanding achievement. Carolann Yoshida is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiroski Yoshida of Canoga Park, California. Carolann has been a worker in the “B” junior church ministry of First Baptist church for three years, a worker in the “B” nursery one semester and a worker in the “B” soul winning ministry for three years. Carolann has worked on the same bus route all four years that she has been at Hyles-Anderson College. You will often see Carolann sitting in church with a little bus girl under one arm, and seated next to her a Chicago teenage girl who obviously has found just the right kind of example for a Christian lady. Carolann has maintained a busy schedule while participating in several singing groups for the college including the Hylander Chorale and traveling for the college in a summer tour group. Miss Yoshida received a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in secondary education. She marched summa cum laude. Kevin Albert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Albert of Blacksburg, Virginia. He is married to the former Patty Doyle, who was the 1985 Miss Hylander. “Brother Kevin,” as he is known to his many bus kids, has been in the bus ministry for over three years. He has been a bus captain for two years and a division leader for the past year. He has been in the Fishermen’s Club, in the “F” Sunday school ministry, a teacher in Junior I and the superin- tendent of the Junior III “B” department for one year. While in the dorms, Kevin served as a dorm monitor for several years and participated in the intramural sports program. Kevin was called to preach in 1980 at the Southwide Baptist Fellowship. Kevin received his eens of Science degree with a major in pastoral theology. He marched magna cum aude. rrr VALEDICTORIANS a 4 ‘Ae 2 ae Sue Gilbert Deanna Meador Rico Scarfi Kim Patton This year Hyles-Anderson had one of its most unique experiences in its academic history. The 1986 school saw a four-way tie for valedictorian. These students were Sue Gilbert, Deanna Meador, Rico Scarfi and Kim Patton. Because of this, we had quad-valedictorians. This unusual dilemma gave Hyles-Anderson College four valedictorians for 1986. Sue Gilbert received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in secondary education. Deanna Meador received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in secondary education. It should be noted that Deanna graduated in just three years. Rico Scarfi received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in secondary education. Kim Patton received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in secondary education. Kim also graduated in just three years of study. , 4 Or SS a A TT TT OTE ISD DOCTOR OF DIVINITY DR. JOSEPH DAVID COMBS The Honorary Doctorate program was a special one to the students of Hyles- Anderson College because of the four men that we honored. One was especially our own. That man was Joe Combs. Dr. Combs has taught at Hyles-Anderson College for 13 years. His insight for Bible teaching has had a major impact on all students who have sat under his tutelage and been willing to learn. It was truly a special night to see Dr. Combs honored by his receiving the Doctor of Divinity degree. Joseph David Combs was saved at nine years of age and called to preach at the age of eleven. After graduating from college, he pastored briefly and then came to the Bible faculty of Hyles-Anderson College. During this time, he has had an exten- sive ministry preaching across America in churches, colleges, and Bible confer- ences. He has a tape club for those who subscribe to his sermons. He has written study guides for many books of the Bible and a Wisdom Manual, which is a collec- tion of writings on Biblical principles. In the coming months, Dr. Combs will be founding a new church near St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida. 242 — Graduation DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES -— Sy YG ” Gs DR. RONALD ALLEN HAMILTON Dr. Ron Hamilton has achieved nation-wide renown as “Patch the Pirate”. His ministry through records and tapes has literally blessed the lives of tens of thou- sands of children across the country. Dr. Hamilton blessed the assemblage at gradu- ation by singing a song, “Rejoice in the Lord.” He has been a blessing to the Hyles- Anderson student body through his speaking on the subject of the right type of music. We are thankful for Dr. Hamilton and his influence on Hyles-Anderson Col- lege and America. Ronald Allen Hamilton graduated from Bob Jones University with a Bachelor’s degree in sacred music in 1973 and a Master’s degree in 1975. He taught at the university from 1973 until 1978, when he resigned to enter a full-time ministry of music and preaching to fundamental churches. In the spring of 1978, Dr. Hamilton discovered he had cancer, and his left eye was removed. Through this experience and subsequent events, God led him into a ministry of children’s music as “Patch the Pirate.” In this role, he has completed six “Patch the Pirate” recordings which have become synonymous with children’s music in fundamental churches. He also wrote the song, “Rejoice in the Lord,” which is the title song of his weekly nation-wide broadcast. Dr. Hamilton says, “God took my left eye due to cancer and gave me a worldwide ministry.” aa Graduation — 243 a a a een ——————————_—_——_—_——_—_——== 244 — Graduation DOCTOR OF DIVINITY DR. Thomas Leslie Hobbins was saved at fourteen years of age at a youth meeting in London, Ontario, Canada. He received a Bachelor’s degree from a Bible college, and later a Master of Divinity degree from seminary, where he received an award for excellence in preaching. During his ministry, he has pastored four churches — two of which were located in Canada. For the past fifteen years, Dr. Hobbins has pas- tored the Lewis Avenue Baptist Church. The church is located on twenty-five acres of land in Temperance, Michigan, which is a suburb of the greater Toledo, Ohio, metropolitan area. The church maintains an attendance of over 500. We highly value the fundamental Seand,, Separation, and Biblical training that is upheld there. God burdened our hearts concerning the music of our country, and Faith Music Missions was started in 1980 as a ministry of Boeke Road Baptist Church in Evansville, Indiana. We are dedicated to the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, winning souls, seeing lives changed, and bringing Christ- honoring music into churches and homes thoughout the world. Since attending my first Pastor's School in 1974, Dr. Jack Hyles, First Baptist Church, and Hyles-Anderson College have had a definite impact on my life. We want to thank all concerned for being a part of this much-needed ministry. You have certainly been a tremendous blessing and encouragement bonus. It is our prayer that God continue to use Hyles-Anderson College in the training of men and women for His service.
