chuul Program HISTORY--Hollis Ward, Instructor The following named subjects were taught this past year in the History Dep- artment Amerlcan History, Democracy and Oklahoma History and Civics for Fresh men American History takes up the early settlement of America, from the state hood of the thirteen original colonies to the end of the second world war A few of the things the students studied were the settlement of the colonies,later for mations of American Democracy, the war for American independence, the war between the North and the South, World War I and World War II Presidents and all their admlnistrations were studied OKLAHOMA HISTORY and CIVICS Oklahoma History relates the settlement of Oklahoma by the Indians, and later by the white men Emphasis is placed on the f1ve CiV1llZed tr1bes,the early Oklahoma farmers and later development of Oklahoma's natural resources The territorial governors along with the statehood governors were studied Oklahoma's natural resources aswell as the educational 1USClCutl0U was studied Civics explains the nature of a Democrat1c government along with 1tS funct 1ons, and the functions of state, local and city governments Civics teaches, the student how to fit into the society 1n which he 15 a future builder DEMOCRACY Democracy as we know it in the United States 1S the pr1me reason for teach ing Democracy Compar1sons are made with other types of governments of the world such as Communism, Fascism, SOCl8llSm, N8Z1Sm and Anarchies Emphasis is placed on the Un1ted Nations organization,and the Unlted States part 1H th1s organlzatlon Current problems and the Korean war re everyday topics of lDt6F6St to the class HOMEMAKING Anna Lou B1ggert The vocatlonal homemak1ng department, under the direct1on of M1ss Anne Lou Blggert, offers four years of homem k1ng to high school girls The course of study 1n each class is determined by teacher pup1l plannmng according to the individual needs of the students Home Economlcs has two important COntF1bUtl0HS to make to the vocat1onal educ tion of ind1v1du ls One is its 1ncre sing respons1b1lity in home living, the other is its contribut1on to wage earning Voc tional homemaking, which is non competltive, not only lncludes the feeding, ClOthlHg, nd housing of the ind1v1dual and the fam1ly, but also the man yement nd use of 1ndividual d fam1ly resources, the protectlon of health and care of the sick, the growth nd development of members of the fam1ly, the care of ch1ldren, the everyday soc1al relationsh1ps of people, the development of individual and group lnt6T6StS wlthin the home nd the social, political, and economic condit1ons affecting 1mmed1ate personal l1v1ng, home and fam1ly life Each v1rl usfs her own home as her lab oratory, 1n which she carr1es out her home projects under the guidance of the in 1181310115 AGRICULTURL Clyde Quattlebaum,Instructor The Vocat1onal Agrlculture department and the P F A chapter are closely lnterwoven together The effect1veness of one overlap w1th the other, there fore, in addition to the usual rout1ne of agriculture, the department srtesses The Vocatlonal Agriculture dapartment and the F F A chapter are closely 1nterwoven together The effectiveness of one overlaps Wltf the other there fore, 1n adi1t1on to the usual routine of agriculture, the department stresses and encourages boys to take part ln act1vit1es which develop leadershlp, aggr essiveness, lngenuity, ab1l1ty to th1nk and reason, cooperatlon, thr1ftness, honesty, worthy use of l91SuF6 t1me and above all character and personal1ty MUSIC W R Bohannon, Dlrector Instruct1on is offered in both vocal and 1nstrumental mus1c Durlng the year, the muQ1C department takes part in such events as radlo programs, con certs, assembly programs, parades competit1on f6St1Vd1S, and state contests In the vocal field, s1ng1ng and muslc theory are taught Part1c1pat1on 1S made ava1lahle 1n both glee clubs and smaller ensemhles In lnstrumental mus1c,students are taught the fundamentals of music the ory and how to play an 1nstrument Dartlcipatlon 1n the band offers experl ence in hoth ensemble play1ng and march1ng To better the1r play1ng abil1ty, students may take part lh solo play1ng and smaller ensembles O O I I O 11 . . . . COLMERCE Vera Maltb1e,Instructor The primary aim of the courses 1n typing 1S the development oi typing power for personal and vocational use The students type the various styles of busln ess and friendly letters, learn to center, tabulate reports, and make carbon copies Emphasis is placed on accuracy in typing In Typ1ng II the students type the many business forms, and legal documents Business letters and letters of application are typed Attractive designs of cars, boats, planes, etc were made by uS1ng various combinat1ons of letters and symbols The students learn to cut stencils and use the l1qu1d duplicator The typed material for the school annual was typed by the annual members 1n this class The major purpose of General BuS1H9SS 1S to give the students an understand ing of business practices valuable to consumers of buslness goods and services The management of personal flnances value of 1nsurance,the many means and values of communication and transportation, simple record keeping and f1l1ng procedures were the units of study Two practice sets 1nclud1ng the ent1re business cycle were completed Business English as a means to effective business letters, includes the PFIHCIPIBS of grammar, spelling punctuat1on,vocabularly and the wr1t1ng of well constructed sentences and paragraphs Emphasis 13 placed upon writing effective business letters English Speech Mrs T O Dewbre, Instructor The En lish Department consists of four classes of English and one of speech All four English classes are composed of one semester each of grammar and literat ure Grammatical usuage has been taught w1th the aim of its functional value in everyday speaking and writing The four classes are progress1ve 1n that the gram matical terms and applications become more technical and advanced with the student needs The goal of these classes has been the mastery of a few minimum essentials wh1ch are necessary for effective speaking In literature English I and II are s1m1lar in that they are presented accord 1ng to literary types Excellant examples of the short story, essays, plays, bio graph1es, lyric and narrat1ve poetry, and the novel are read All are means of English III is a survey of Amerlcan Literature from the writings of the pilg r1m fathers to the twentieth century World War II poets The works of such authors as Poe, Emerson, Longfellow, Whitman, D1Ck1HqOH, Frost, and Sandburg are stressed English IV begins with WBeowulf', the first Engllsh epic and concludes with the poetry of Houseman and Masefleld and the dramas of Noel Coward Outstanding quotations from various selectlons are committed to memory A thorough study of Shakespeare's Macbeth was made Speech class presented means of meet1ng the 1nd1v1dual needs for better pro nunc1at1on and enunciation by vocabulary drills and classroom speaking Competit ive work was done 1n drama and various types of speeches MATH SCIEN E Gilbert Bishop, Instructor The Science department consists of onlv one course which 15 offered to the Freshman and Sophmore classes Th1s course 15 offered to give the students a better understandlng of the world in which they live so they may better apprec iate this world and to teach them the value of scient1f1c thinking whlch will help them solve the problems which they will face in l1fe The mathematics department consists of composite mathem tics which 13 ofi ered to the Freshman class,and algebra which is offered to the Sophomore class The purpose of the department is two fold, f1FSt to teach the students to think logically and second to prepare those students who willcnntlnue their educat1on 1n college for the courses they w1ll encounter there Driver's Tra1n1ng Dr1ver's Training was lntroduced this year Of all School this course has a more practical application than foremost cause of automobile accidents in our country is primary aim of this course 1S to instill in the students Golden Rule on the road If the effect of the course on venf one serious accident in the future this course will thousand times courses taught in High any other Since the improper attitudes The the attitude of the the students will pre have paid for itself a V -- . n .
