The class of 1947 is indeed honored in dedicating the Yearbook to our highly respected head coach and history teacher, Mr. Edward F. Sherlock. For twenty-three years Mr. Sherlock has taught and coached in our school and during those years he has brought added fame to the Hyde Park District by the steady and sometimes spectacular success of his high-school athletic teams. Mr. Sherlock's forty-eight yearsof high-school coaching have won for him the title of Dean of American High School Coaches. This title would be an empty honor were it not accompanied by the high esteem in which the community and all Boston hold the famous coach. Wherever the name of Sherlock is mentioned, there also is mentioned his strict discipline, his ruggedadherence to fundamentals, his marvelous knowledge of inside football, and his ability to get the most out of his players. English High 1899, Mercersburg Academy 1907-1910, Commerce 1915-1921, Hyde Park 1925-1930, 1933-1937, and 1945-those years represent the football teams that made the name of Skip Sherlock legendary throughout the East. His boys, whether they went on to college, and scores of them did, or whether they entered into industry, never forgot the lessons Skip taught them and their successes have brought a gleam of satisfaction to the old master's eyes. The rules say that Mr. Sherlock must retire because of age and so we must bid him good-bye. Nevertheless, his youthful appearance and peppery manner indicate that he has many more active years ahead of him. Wherever he goes, he can be sure that the graduates of this class and all other Hyde Park High classes wish him many, many years of happiness and success.
