Sherlock. For twenty-three years Mr. Sherlock has taught and coached in our school and during those years he has brought added fame to the Hyde Park District by the steady and sometimes spectacular success of his high-school athletic teams. Mr. Sherlock's forty-eight yearsof high-school coaching have won for him the title of Dean of American High School Coaches. This title would be an empty honor were it not accompanied by the high esteem in which the community and all Boston hold the famous coach. Wherever the name of Sherlock is mentioned, there also is mentioned his strict discipline, his ruggedadherence to fundamentals, his marvelous knowledge of inside football, and his ability to get the most out of his players. English High 1899, Mercersburg Academy 1907-1910, Commerce 1915-1921, Hyde Park 1925-1930, 1933-1937, and 1945-those years represent the football teams that made the name of Skip Sherlock legendary throughout the East. His boys, whether they went on to college, and scores of them did, or whether they entered into industry, never forgot the lessons Skip taught them and their successes have brought a gleam of satisfaction to the old master's eyes. The rules say that Mr. Sherlock must retire because of age and so we must bid him good-bye. Nevertheless, his youthful appearance and peppery manner indicate that he has many more active years ahead of him. Wherever he goes, he can be sure that the graduates of this class and all other Hyde Park High classes wish him many, many years of happiness and success. EDWARD F. SHERLOCK Head Coach History Teacher I924 - I947 zfrewmt This class of 1947 in presenting its Yearbook welcomes back many of our vet- erans and wishes them all good luck. The ' book' contains a short record of our academic, social, and sporting accomplishments. Hyde Park High continues to develop a group of students of excellent calibre and sends them forth to hold high the standard of our school. an ten ts Dedication Faculty Seniors Sports Activities Features Advertisements DR. Sherlock CCDIIDIIJ Front Row: Futa, MacLean, Shanks, Lnnutn, Houlihnn, Brady, Ciovucco, Schultz, Mu rru y all Knowing that 'this was Coach Skip Sherlock's last Hyde Park football team, the Parkers went out to do or die on the gridiron last fall and although the record shows five wins to four losses, the boys were never outgamed or really out- classed in any game. The true spirit of the team was shown in its last ditch rally in the final game against our traditional rival, Jamaica Plain. With the score tied thirteen all and less than a minute left to play, Captain John Koffske rified a thirty- yard pass to our fighting end, Bobby Schultz. Master Robert made a clean snatch on the midfield stripe, bowled over two opponents, and outraced the field to pay dirt. Thus a brilliant and stubborn foe was sunk while old Ned Sherlock, his eyes popping and his voice breaking with excite- ment, was raised on the shoulders of his delighted kids. Photo bulbs flashed and newsmen clamored for a statement from the old silver fox of the Boston coaching clan. The Skipper rolled his quid and gave the following quote to the scribbling re- porters, In all my forty-eight years of high school coaching, I never saw a better finish. In the last quarter of this game, my boys produced some of the most thrill- ing football it has been my pleasure to watch. To say the least, I'm proud of them and I want to publicly thank these Hyde Park young fellows for helping to wind up my Hyde Park career in such a thrilling and satisfactory manner. All season long All-Scholastic John- ny Koffske was a tower of strength. His 'X passing against English High and East Boston was unsurpassed in the entire Boston season. A gamester to the core, he tossed two quick touchdown passes in the last quarter against Eastie, despite the fact that his lip had been split wide open a few plays before. His cut-back run to the weak side against Roslindale followed by a ninety-yard broken field run for the winning tally was one of the gems of the season. The running of Quinn, Fata, and Garber, the clever play-calling and de- fensive work of Mitch Hayes, and the hard charging of Jud Giardino, were other backiield high-lights. Ends Schultz, Murray, and Cibotti did fine work in covering the Hanks and FOOTBALL KVARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITYJ grabbing the forwards. In the middle of the line Elmer Langley and Jock Houlihan showed to good advantage. The heavy duty line work was well done by Bob McLean, Bob Lanata, George Ciovaco, Joe Shanks, Red Brady, Donald Conti, Jim Buckley, and Vin McDonough. Other players that car- ried on well when called upon were Frank McCarthy, Larry Silver, Paul McGrann, Frank O'Sullivan, Chet Molinario, Bob Neelon, johnny Bauer, and Bobby Lead- better. - The J ayvees proved stubborn on the defense giving up no points as they tied two and won one. Many of the J.V. youngsters showed good promise and should be varsity timber next year.
