The team showed a powerful de- fense and an ability to gain on the ground. The senior backfield of Powell, Best, Cohen and Collins contributed greatly to the team's success. Davy Powell, an All-Scholastic choice, proved a footballer of highest calibre in all departments and was a tower of strength throughout the season. Teddy Cohen and jimmy Best, snappy signal-caller, contributed many brilliant runs while Collins was steady in blocking and tackling. In the line, Co-Captain and left tackle Al Breen was a master in analyzing the opposition's strategy and was quick to crash in to stop the developing play. At center, Rube jacobanis was a whiz, com- bining with guards Sammartino and Fer- zoco to form a powerful middle section. At right tackle Ed Burke was a dependable performer. Left end George O'Brien completed more than one hne forward pass to aid in the scoring. His knife-like tackles cut down many an ambitious runner among the foe. Right end Bob Sullivan was ever alert and pounced on several loose balls to take the pep out of the opponents' drives at the psychological moment. Others to show to good advantage were, Quinn, Hoppe. Connolly. O'Connell, Martensen, Shute, Crowley, Cibotti, Bloom. Amara, Falvey. McAllister, Roach, Hunt. Burdulis. Trorato. Freeman. Shamon, and johnson. 4 ogg 1. Last year our ice-men came within a whisker of clinching the District chame pionship. This year we did positively put it on ice. With veterans like Tony Arena, keeper of the nets, defensemen jacobanis and Collins, and wings Captain Kelson, O'Brien, and Sullivan, we had a fine scoring combination. In January, the Boston School Committee reinstated basketball as an interscholastic sport. In this school Mr. William H. Dugan was appointed by Dr. Horgan to coach the boys in this great game. The genial and efficient Mr. Dugan was a basketball and baseball letterman during his student days at Boston Uni- versity. The present plans call for a varsity team for competition in the District League, and for class teams for intramural engagements. Hyde Park has always been the home of great basketball players. With our great natural talent and the Fine leader- ship of Coach Dugan we expect to carry off first year honors. s.,-f,ff1lIff.f, 10144-In lllllmrn liuizun. lun:-re. Ida Chris- tofori and Phyllis Pepin know how to handle that ball! Miss Hayes and Miss Gilligan both come in for their share of praise for being good sports, As Miss Gilligan says, There is nothing like being the innocent source of a bit of side-splitting merrimentf' All after-school activities which take place in the gym are under the direction of Miss Hayes. The demonstration of physical edu- cation at Hyde Park High School is usually presented to the public in the school audi- torium during the latter part of May, The purpose of this demonstration is to give parents and relatives of pupils some idea of the kind and extent of physical training participated in by the girls. l66l Baton Twirlers Cheer Leaders Each year previous to 1944, Miss Hayes, our gym instructor, has recruited among senior girls for setting-up drill leaders. Exercises were given daily by the leaders in the classes to which they were assigned. The purpose of these exercises was to improve the posture and physical health of pupils by suiiiciently vigorous exercises. This year, however, the setting- up drill period has been eliminated and in its nlace the girls now have four periods of gymnasium and one of health etiueations Classes in social dancing are held in the gym each Tuesday at the close of school. Here. dance steps both modern and otherwise are learned. Among the best dancers are Helen Clark, Kathleen Agnew, and Gilda Ruzzo. On Wednesday mornings before school the Baton Twirling Club meets. Pllvlli- Pm-I Spanish Club The Spanish Club meets every Tuesday on the seventh period under the supervision of Miss Sharkey. The club is organized principally to give its members a chance to learn Spanish by speaking it, and conversing in this beautiful language with one another. They intend to put on a play in Spanish some time during the year, and are working hard towards the day when they will achieve this aim. President, Mildred Cokely: vice president, james Mclverx and secretary, Rita Caldwell, are doing a splendid job in helping the club to realize its ambition. We have already had a Fine example of the oratorical abilities of a few senior members of the Debating Club. In late November, a Junior Town Meeting was held during an assembly in which the four participants: Michael Park- er, Alvin Wysocki, Jean Slein and Gerard Agnew argued the significant question. Should the Government Subsidize Col- lege Education After the War? Due to his quick thinking and reasonable answers, Alvin Wysocki was proclaimed the winner by the decision of the judges: Miss Rhodes, Mr. Leary, and Mr. Buckley. l TU 5. The Dramatic Club, also under the supervision of Mr. Lahive, has several performances on its calendar during the coming months. A patriotic play will be presented before an assembly in February. The club will also take part in a radio broadcast with various other district schools. Depending on the amount of talent left in the spring, a senior play will be produced. These performances together with an oncoming round table discussion on a local network and a debate with a Public Latin school team tend to promise us a full and interesting club year. I , I . . . MILITARY AFFAIRS During the past year, there has been established a record which many Boston high schools will be aiming for in the years to come. For 14 consecutive years, the Hyde Park High School Regiment won champion- ship honors in the annual Boston school- boys' parade. Now, that stretch of vic- tories has been checked but not ended. Last year, we placed fifth yielding our title to East Boston High. This was a hard defeat to take but we took it as defeated champions should. In the previous year, Hyde Park established a feat which no other Boston high school had ever achieved in the his- tory of the Boston schoolboy parade. She annexed all the titles at stake. That is why the defeat after such a memorable victory was hard for the boys to take. Both the band and the drum and bugle corps had to relinquish their newly won titles and receive instead the bitter taste of defeat. The drum and bugle corps placed fourth and the band placed slightly worse. i12l Band Qcuoq Drum Corps .Muller-.mn. .l. lla1r't.l'.r1:-kwn. Wln'Lfl1'l'.Nlllllxzlvl.Fllrlulxvr, xll'ir4rll:llJll'. His company won first prize in the drill competition, at Stony Brook Reservation, last May: therefore the honor fell upon him to lead the schoolboy parade. Second prize was copped by Francis jacobanis, another capable junior. Upon him fell the distinction of leading the Hyde Park High '73 msnilb sumo, School Regiment. It was unfortunate that Lieutenant Edward Burke's nrst regiment could not win for him. Throughout the year, he drilled the boys with all his ability and knowledge. The band and drum corps were drilled equally well but the fact remains that it just wasn't our year. We, the seniors of Hyde Park High, certainly hope that this defeat will be overshadowed by the victories of coming years. l73l M22- Wx at ', M , Z 17 ? U Q M 2 A' H 5 3 e A E2 5 v 2. The art classes have done a great deal of Red Cross work in our school. In the month of October the members of the art classes filled a Christmas Box to be sent overseas to a base hospital. In this box were, 500 cards, 500 food decorations, 50 posters 50 small Cutouts and a collapsi- ble table center piece. The cooking classes helped to fill this box with cookies and goodies. The men overseas appreciate these decorations and favors. Boxes like these help our soldiers and sailors forget the grime of war for a while. To our local Naval Hospitals were sent Thanksgiving and Christmas menu covers. In the shops items like ashtrays and ashstands are made for our Naval Hospitals nearby. A very large collection was made of small toys for unfortunate children of war- torn areas. Twenty rag dolls were dressed also for the same purpose. Everything that is made and col- lected for the Red Cross by our school is sent into Red Cross headquarters and there is packed and shipped out overseasq except some things that are kept in this country for emergencies. The Red Cross does a great deal for the man in service and performs such deeds as keeping the service man in touch with his family and loved ones. Red Cross activities play an import- ant part in our school program and we have had several very successful collections thanks to the co-operation of our pupils. The school representatives to the monthly meetings at Red Cross headquarters are James R. Cass, senior delegate and Lloyd Sinclair, junior delegate.
