Olmsted. fommerckzl For those who intend to work soon after graduation, a commercial course is very prac- tical. Even prospective college students will find it beneficial. Shorthand gives aid to any person who devotes some of his time to learn- ing it. A good secretarial job can be obtained, or this ability can be applied when taking notes in college. Typing is one of the more valuable courses offered in high school. Ofiice R.0.ZC Under the excellent guid- ance of Capt. Gordon Riply, now replacing Captain Prond- zinski who was sent to Korea, our R.O.T.C., Reserve OfHcer's Training Corps, has risen to a new height in producing well trained graduates for military service. Yearly the R.O.'l'.C.'s in the Chicago area undergo a federal inspection in which their marching formations and theoretical knowledge are dem- onstrated before a reviewing l hoard. Practice trains puplis in office conduct and teaches them various other traits and abilities that are necessary to become successful in the business field. Selling, Advertising and Com- mercial Law are also offered. For the student who intends to work after graduation, a com- mercial course will eventually lead into a job which will earn a very satisfactory living for him. Captain Gordon M. We, as students, know very little about how the other fellow lives, but by taking foreign languages we learn how to read and write someone elsels tongue, and also something of the history of the country. With a high school foreign language as a stimulant we can go on with the subject in college and perhaps in travels or an occupa- tion in later life. lVorld affairs are becoming more important every day, creating a vital need for more diplomats and interpreters. At Hyde Park, the foreign languages offered are: Latin, Spanish, French and German. 6013 Pfzyslbal Educanbn Physical education is an ini- portant subject for women of today and Hyde Park coeds must take four years of it. In addition to basketball, volley- ball, baseball, soccer, and exer- cises, they are instructed in health and swimming. For those girls especially interested in physical education there are the Girl's Athletic Association and the Leader's Class. The girl's gym is always a hub of energy and activity.

Row 1: Helene Cranbyg Ann Buckley. lrbrary The capable librarian staff at Hyde Park High School is efficiently run by Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Christiansen, and Mrs. Withrow. They try to the best of their ability to aid stu- dents in selecting books, and instructing pupils on proper usage of reference books and catalogues. Without a doubt the librarians aid students in every Way to become better citizens by encouraging them to read fine books offered in our library. 22 Ofhke Secretaries Two of the busiest places in Hyde Park High School are the North and South offices where you can always find a staff of eHicient clerks making out transcripts for colleges and uni- versities,completingandfilingstudents' records, issuing supplies to teachers, and answering the many questions of visitors and pupils. Students are al- ways welcome to visit these ofhces and to ask questions regarding the educa- tional administration. The whole school population owes this staff un- limited appreciation for keeping our records in such good order that our future colleges or employers may refer to them several years from now.
