Scfbnce and Manual Arts Teenagers, as our nation's future leaders, should become familiar with the problems which they shall have to overcome in a world ever changing by new scientific discoveries. They must take the lead in scientific research if they hope to further medical knowledge and discover inventions for the benefit of mankind. The study of science, therefore, is extremely valuable. Besides offering excellent training, the man- ual arts courses greatly benefit Hyde Park. The school press prints all the school pro- grams, plus other items. In the front lobby there is a large showcase in which are dis- played the handy articles made by the VVood Shop. In addition, the aspiring young home- makers in the Foods Classes make delicious goodies for special teas and programs. Helen J. Kriewitzg Walter Brenkeg Hazel G. Constantinidesg George J. Maffzemaffbs For many years Hyde Park has taken great pride in the honors won by its mathematics department, now under the supervision of Mrs. Eva Henson Shull. This year another honor was bestowed upon our school by the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology which stated that because their freshmen entering from Hyde Park have made an exceptionally fine record, M.I.T. will no longer require entrance examinations of any of our boys who graduate in the upper fifth of their class. We are all proud of the record established by former grad- uates and are deterined to uphold it. The department offers essential mathematics, algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, ad- vanced algebra, college algebra, and solid geometry. These courses encourage students to reason out problems for themselves. Arr At Hyde Park the Art course is a very extensive one consist- ing of a beginners' class, which is required and advanced classes for those students ser- iously interested in this sub- ject. Today surrealism and modern art are becoming more important to all in addition to the other branches of art, with a vast opportunity for youth of today to take the lead in artistic development in the world of tomorrow. Social Studies and Boy? Pfiysfkal Educafrbn To gain a thorough understanding of our cultural background, the Social Studies De- partment offers such subjects as American, ancient and European historyg civics, the study of world governmentsg careers, which helps students determine their most suitable occu- pationsg and economics, a study of consumer interests and common economic problems. These will aid us to solve our many world problems. The Boy's Athletic Department is attempt- ing to make leaders of this generation by teaching to boys physical fitness and good sportsmanship. In addition to the regular school teams, students take swimming and health to learn good health habits and how to meet successfully any emergency. It is under- standable, therefore, why this course is re- quired for four years. Henry H. Schultz: Vllilliam T. Bourgeois: liloyd E. ltohrkc: llarry M. Ellis. 19
