In arldition, the English De- partment desires their pupils to have a high degree of knowledge ot' our language. To make this study more interesting, sub- jects such as dramatics, journalism, and pub- lic speaking are offered as well as the re- Row 2: Katharin Finlev: Ruth C. Curtiss: Walter Dubyk. He will never have to dread speaking before an audi- ence or clearly exressing his ideas on paper. lCvery pupil, upon entering Hyde Park, should take as much English as he possibly can throughout his high school career. Musik . M . One does not need to be a Bach or Beethoven to enjoy the melodious music heard in the classrooms of the choruses, band and or- chestras at Hyde Park. Har- mony is a subject where the students work on their own compositions, Being able to create one's ideas in music shows an ability in leader- ship which can be incorpor- ated in many musical tields, such as critical reviews, com- position and transposition, or conducting.

They have always helped us to become better stu- dents in school and more dependable citizens in the future. Each class has its own grade advisers who handle numerous difficult problems. In Room 111 stands a little cubby-hole, containing a desk behind which you can occa- sionally find another student counsellor, Mr. Glen Fisher, who helps find work for students who need it, advises on suitable careers and aids the students in any way he possibly can. 6'ooa' Mlzensfzbb The Good Citizenship OH5ce at Hyde Park is headed by Miss Ver- onica VVhelan who deals with early dismissals, tardiness and class at- tendance. Truancy problems are handled by our truant officer, Mrs. Fishell. Our school psychologist, Miss Kernan, has the interesting job of giving students intelligence tests and helping them to choose appro- priate careers. By teaching students to obey the school rules and advis- ing them on future activities, these counsellors help them to become good citizens as the title of their office implies. 15

Maffzemaffbs For many years Hyde Park has taken great pride in the honors won by its mathematics department, now under the supervision of Mrs. Eva Henson Shull. This year another honor was bestowed upon our school by the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology which stated that because their freshmen entering from Hyde Park have made an exceptionally fine record, M.I.T. will no longer require entrance examinations of any of our boys who graduate in the upper fifth of their class. We are all proud of the record established by former grad- uates and are deterined to uphold it. The department offers essential mathematics, algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, ad- vanced algebra, college algebra, and solid geometry. These courses encourage students to reason out problems for themselves. Arr At Hyde Park the Art course is a very extensive one consist- ing of a beginners' class, which is required and advanced classes for those students ser- iously interested in this sub- ject. Today surrealism and modern art are becoming more important to all in addition to the other branches of art, with a vast opportunity for youth of today to take the lead in artistic development in the world of tomorrow.
