SOCIAL STUDIES The social sciences are fascinating to study, for they tell us of many things: of great men who make their timesg of wars which shake their timesg of changes, good and bad. The most interesting thing of all is that, though times and events may superficially dilfer, the underlying causes are always the same. All of the subjects taught-such as civics and medieval history-are alike in some re- spectsg all are different in othersg and all are exciting. Shop talk HOME ECONOMICS AND SHOP Home economics and shop are subjects which are very useful to every girl or boy. Our well-equipped home economics depart- ment is divided into two main divisions: cook- ing and sewing. Hyde Park ought to turn out many good housewives because of the guid- ance given in both of these courses. The shop courses-industrial arts, print shop, wood shop, model making, pattern mak- ing-give the boys a chance to work with their hands and to prepare for a vocation. MRS. HAZEL G. And, strangely enough, you have never heard of the subject being reviewed ! All your years of studying' will be rewarded, however, when you are able to read, write, and speak the correct English which is the sign of a cultured person.

They are staring striaght ahead at a chart on the wall and talking to themselves. Ah, comes the dawn-they are looking at a chart of the typewriter keyboard, and they are repeating the letters on that chart to themselves, thus learning the positions of the letters on the typewriter. None of that Columbus system for them. You know how that goes, don't you? Explore and discover. What is going on in this school? Look at the hieroglyphics on the wall-they look like chicken scratches. This is one of the short- hand classes. Take your pick ofthe secretaries early. They are going fast. WVould you like to be a Fuller Brush man? have a forceful personality? Then selling and advertising arejust the subjects for you. After 26 you have finished this course, you will be able to knock on any door, push your foot into the opening, and sell any old thing with a vibrant personality, poise, and a smile. Of course you may encounter some over-worked and disgruntled housewife . . . All kidding aside, selling and advertising are excellent courses. Other commercial studies offered are com- mercial law and commercial geography. All of the commercial subjects will be a great help to you, whether you go into business or not. You can always use shorthand and typ- ing-in college and on many other occasions all during your life. Many students leave Hyde Park and immediately go to work. Others go on to business college. But all students agree that the training they received at Hyde Park was really super,
