Yvhen you look at your clock in the morning, the numbers on its dial inform you that it is time to get up. When you face the street-car conductor, you have to be able to count out four cents. Then there is the great diH'erence between seventy-five and one hundred-a difference which is magnihed when these numbers are found on your test papers. In going to the store, it is always an asset to you to be able to count the change. Always during your life, the ability to handle num- bers will help you to make a living, and to protect yourself from crooks. Aside from having many practical applica- tions, mathematics, which is based on logic, is a very interesting science. A study ofmathe- matics can help you to think in that straight line which is the shortest distance between two points. The ability to think straight will come in handy many times during your life-it will protect you from the false logic of demagogues, and it will enable you to face a situation, think it through rationally, and act accordingly. These are only a few reasons for the im- portance ofthe study of mathematics-an im- portance fully recognized by the fine math teachers of Hyde Park. 21

W'ell, it was prob- ably sulphur dioxide, or something similarly odor- iferous. Does your chicken dinner taste differ- ent lately? That is probably because you have been dissecting grasshoppers. Hyde Parkls science courses offer you many opportunities to experiment-and to learn. Gen- eral science is a course designed to give you a superficial knowledge of the most important of the natural sciences. Botany deals with plants, Zoology deals with animals, and biology is a mixture of Zoology and botany. If you like to mix things just to see what will happen, then take chemistry and go to it-only don't let any- one catch you. Physics is the subject for those of you who are good at mathematics, like logic, or just wonder why the doors all stick in summer. Now is the time to find out about the miracles going on around us daily-and perhaps, in the process, to prepare for a good career in science.
