Mr. Gonnelly at work January 31, 1946, was a sad day for Hyde Park. On that day Mr. Joseph F. Gonnelly retired as principal of Hyde Park. For thirteen years Mr. Gonnelly had been a familiar and beloved figure in the halls of Hyde Park. To the student's eyes, he had really been there in a dual capacity. One was that of lylr. Gonnelly, the dignified, white- haired principal and eHicient administrator of Hyde Park, who always saw to it that his school was among the best in the country. The other was that of '1Papa Joen, the kindly gentleman who was never too busy to listen to the tale of woes of some bewildered student or dis- traught parent. In both capacities, he was beloved and respected by the students and faculty of Hyde Park. Sorry as Hyde Park was to see lVlr. Gon- nelly go, it realizes that lylr. Gonnelly well deserves some leisure. He is now spending most of his time trying to catch up on all the reading he missed While he was busy at Hyde Park, in the summer he intends to raise a little garden by his house in Indiana. Although Mr. Gonnelly has oHicially with- drawn from Hyde Park, his interests are still with his school. He remembers all his old Hyde Park friends with pleasure, coming back to visit them occasionally, and he attends many Hyde Park games. And Hyde Park will always remember Mr. Gonnelly. JOHN R. SPECHT Acting Principal MR. SPECHT Upon the retirement of Mr. Joseph F. Gon- nelly as principal, Mr. John R. Specht became the acting principal of Hyde Park. In mov- ing from the South to the North Oflice, he has undertaken a hard task-that of follow- ing in the footsteps of Mr. Gonnellyg and he is succeeding admirably. Mr. Specht is by no means a new man in the educational Held. He has been in the Chicago public school system for eighteen years, and the assistant principal of Hyde Park since February, 1941. Now, having assumed his new post of acting principal, he is faced with a multitude of new duties. Running a school as large as Hyde Park is no easy task. There are a myriad ofdetails to be attended to, ranging all the way from meeting parents and settling the twisted affairs of stu- dents to making out reports for the Board of Education. As acting principal, Mr. Specht is the director of the faculty, the head of the business depart- ment, the director of all school affairs, and a sort of father confessor to the faculty and to the students. The great john R. is a mighty popular and a mighty busy man at Hyde Park. 18 Miss BUCKLEY ' Miss Lucy Buckley became the acting as- sistant principal of Hyde Park upon the re- tirement of Mr. Gonnelly. Miss Buckley now has Mr. Specht,s former job in the South Office. From this base of operations she moves in when the situation has become beyond hope. If you have cut classes or failed geometry once too often- Miss Buckley will meet your parents. She takes care of all referrals-that is, cases re- ferred to her from the grade advisers. She also has to take care of all-ouch-discipline cases. Formerly Miss Buckley was-and probably will be again-the adjustment teacher at Hyde Park. Being adjustment teacher is a very interesting job, and one Miss Buckley likes very much. As adjustment teacher, it was her job to test pupils. Then she had to interpret the scores of the tests, and to counsel the pupils according to the outcome of the tests. She had to meet and interview pupils and parents, to recommend the subjects to be taken, and to make all necessary adjustments. VVhether she is the adjustment teacher or the acting assistant principal of Hyde Park, Miss Buckley is a very busy woman who loves her work.
