In presenting to you the Aitchpe of 194 5, during which time a most devastating war has thrown the world into havoc and r uin, We search within ourselves and our activi- ties to find the real meaning of service. Service is something which is required of us the moment we are born. Perhaps few of us realize this, but it is true. VVhen we are small, the duties which We perform are termed Ufavorsf, As we adva nce through elementary school, and to high school, these favors continue to multiply importance until we Finally are no longer doing favors, in number and realize that we but services. Many have gone through life thus far un- conscious of service, its meaning. and what service requires of us. This war is largely responsible for making us more mature in our outlook on life. think, and wonder. It has made us stop, We are surrounded by signs of service: our classmates leaving us to join the armed forces, our pupils bringing armfuls of waste paper to sch ool, and contributing to the books for servicemen's collection in the school library. Our teachers and fellow students have also continued in an earnest effort to maintain the high scholastic standard and our division minutemen are constantly on the job to keep our stamp and bgnd sales above par. In spite of competition with jobs and the war psychology, we are still giving our spare time to help others and to bring this war to a victorious end.

Dedication Let me find it in my heart to say, XYhen yagrant wishes beckon me astray, This is my work, my blessing, not my doom g Of all who live I am the only one XYho can do this work in the right way. In the life of Miss Beulah I. Shoesmith the hopes and aspirations expressed in these lines by Abraham Lincoln were fully rea- lized. After thirty-five years of earnest and conscientious effort as an outstanding teacher of mathematics, she is now retiring, with the fullest respect and most sincere de- votion of almost three generations of Hyde Parkers who have had the good fortune to receive their training under her. Hers could be called meritorious service beyond the call of duty, for she spent sev- eral extra hours after her regular working day, helping students over their difficulties, bolsterng the weak, and further encouraging the strong. There was not a moment of dullnessg for she possesses that saving grace, a keen sense of humor, which she frequently in- jected into her class discussions. Moreover, she has that rare ability of making clear and simple that which previously had seemed beyond comprehension. Thus she has contributed to the enviable scholastic reputation of Hyde Park. For her outstanding ability and leader- ship, for her sincerity and fairness, for her never-failing helpfulness and understanding this 1945 Aitchpe is respectfully dedicated
