Faculty The faculty of Hyde Park High School works-and Works hard. It works every school day, sometimes Saturdays, evenings, and holidays included- except during those seasons when it is having faculty parties, going on sabbati- cal leaves, taking vacations, or planting shrubbery in front of school. Hyde Park offers many opportunities to those pupils who wish to widen their field of knowledge, namely, a third semester of Botany and Zoology, a complete fourth year in mathematics, and honor societies in every major subject for those wishing to prepare for scholarship examinations and to come in contact with others interested in the same subjects as they. Students entering Hyde Park may choose from a great variety of courses, among which are: The General Language, the General Science, the Commercial, the Social Science, the Art, and the Household Arts. Each department has a head or chairman. In the Language department, Miss Buchanan heads the English, Miss Jackson, Latin, Miss Johnson, French, Miss Peede, Spanish, and Mrs. Randall, German. Mr. Hipple heads the History department, Miss Shoesmith, Mathematics, Mr. Byland, Commercial, Miss Bigelow, Art, and Mr. Robinson, Music. Each Head in his department tries to make his course as interesting as possible for the pupil. Coaches Hasan, Schultz, West, and Schrnidhofer supervise the various varsity sports. Under their supervision, Hyde Park has come through nicely in sports. Miss Marston supervises the G. A. A. which has furnished extra sports for girls interested in athletics and earning their letters. The Household Arts' classes in which Household Management, Cooking, Sewing, and Knitting are taught, are attended by many girls interested in Home Management. Mr. Curtis, woodshop teacher, and his class build the stage set-ups for the operettas. Although the Board of Education has removed the staff of deans, nevertheless, the students keep in close contact with the faculty advisors who are Miss White for Freshman Girls, Mr. Williams, Freshman Boys, Mrs. Priddy, Sophomore Girls, and Mr. Broek, Sophomore Boys. At any time, Juniors and Seniors can confer with Mr. Smalley and Mr. Gonnelly. Although the Branch is physically disconnected from the Main, it is Hyde Park in every sense of the word. The Library, under the supervision of Miss Van Hattem, librarian, fur- nishes the students an opportunity. Classes being taught the uses of the card catalogue and periodicals have been in progress for the past two semesters. The Oiiice Force, consisting of Miss Hurney, Miss Buckley, Miss Cranby, and Mrs. Vursell, do all the office and clerical work in the school, take care of trans- fers, and see that the pupils have enough credits to graduate. Despite the fact that the teachers work hard and are very tired at the end of a school day, they are interested in school activities and are willing to sponsor clubs. Page 17
