X , Twenty THE LATIN DEPARTMENT Hyde Park offers four years work in the Latin language and litera- ture. It aims to give foundation for the modern languages, ever-increas- ing knowledge of English grammar, and ability to understa-nd the exact meaning of English words derived from the Latin This is gained ln the first and second years by mastering the elements of the language and by reading yarious stories and selected portions of Caesar s Gallic War The third year emphasizes politics through Cicero s orations Vergil s Aeneid in the fourth year gives the pupll an historical and cultural background and unusual literary appreciation of this epic THE SPANISH DEPARTMENT The Spanish department offers college entrance credit helps English by translation and broadening vocabulary and offers a generous con tribution to cultural value In view of the fact that a large portion of the inhabitants of America have Spanish as their language a knowledge of Spanish favors both social and business interests for people of the United States in Hispanic America Spanish teachers hope to send better equipped tourists pilots salesman perhaps ambassadors, to Latin America This does not seem at all improbable since even now many graduates are earning their daily bread with Spanish learned 1n school THE GERMAN DEPARTMENT The German department has grown frona liliputiin s1Le during the XVorld War to seytnteen classes of all years and semesters While it s an object of the teachers to give their students a reading knoyyledge of German appreciation for the literature of the Germans and a general attitude of understanding and friendliness to foreign nations they are also earnestly interested in building up Hntr characters in the young people of our school The teachers feel that they haye an unusually good type of ladies and gentlemen and therefore find the yy ork enjoy able to themselyes and profitable to the pupils During the first year nh pupils art taught grammar and their second year German literature
