Tracks ofthe Herd of 52 Before the snow came around in 4-8 the herd that was due to be fence broke and shipped out in 52 got throwed together in a. pen at H H S They had their tails up and was running around bellering for everybody to look at how big they was which was about the time they got throwed and had the ' Freshman brand slapped onto their hides to show them they wasn t as big as they thought they was Folks who had figured there had ought to be a way to tell them apart gave them a bunch of names to prove they was registered stock So out of the ones who bellered the loudest at the branding one called Barbara Bonifield got picked to be the president One named janet Collins got to be a president too but they put vice on front of her title for some reason which ain t being put out r1ght now Helen Davis who likes to get things down in red and white can't be black and white them s Holsteins was secretary jim Wheelock who always said that veal regardless of price makes the best meat was the one they let take care of the money The other names on this registered stock was Dean Marshal Bob Hungerford Woodrow Moran Robert Weakly Wayne Macomber and jim Macomber After everybody got shoved 1nto the right feed pens the old ones just about ready to ship out Seniors got us mixed up in a d1pp1ng party that shoulda been for sheep Initiation they called it Enough eggs got busted on our backs to make us look like a flock y-, J,- of chickens was using us for a roost Some of us had to dance 4' the hula Looked kinda like a bunch of cows coming in at milking time a sort of Atlantic City beauty contest where the contestants had chipped in enough on the assets to double them the little heifers had started chewing the rag which is what women seem to prefer In the discussion it come up that schools were a lot like saddles a durn sight easier to get smart and ride in the saddle of education than it is to walk with boots on That s part of what we learned the first year During the second year we learned a whole lot more The rootin tootin cowhands Started to figure out what the girls were R for This news scared them out of three fourths of a year 5 growth which is why Sophomores always look so puny and be 6 wlldered Also Bruce johnson and Woodrow Moran got extra brand letters for running around in a corral that s got lines instead of fences and for throwing a ball at a hole up near the barn roof The only reason they were able to hit it is because the hole is bigger than the ball is XO.
