Hyannzs Grade School Thxs page of our drama IS devoted to the very lmportant foundatzon of our school system the GRADE SCHOOL The contmued growth and success of Hyannis Hxgh School depends prnmarxly upon the contmued successful tramxng of the abxlztles of these one hundred aspnrmg apprentrces Four years ago through the efforts of mterested local patrons and encouragmg recom mendatxons of the State Department the outstandmg unprovement of the year was achxeved A kmdergarten for begmner puplls was added In spxte of the shortage of teachers for begmners we were fortunate ln securmg Mrss Jones Mrs Eck and Mxss Zzer who have been effzclent rn carrymg thrs work We hope xt wxll contmue to be a part of our local school system rn the future The grades have a number of specral actwltxes durmg the school term Thexr annual Christmas program as one of the most enjoyable performances of the year as far as the pubhc 15 concerned Thrs year s program was exceptionally entertaxmng Musical selectzons presented by the first six grades were under the dxrectxon of Miss Zner those of the upper grades were mn charge of Mr Powell of the hxgh school muszc department Mxss Zxer presented her kmdergarten puprls m a serxes of recztatlons and two Chrrstmas songs Mass Foote dzrected her thzrd and fourth grades m an approprxate play 'An Amerxcan Chrzstmas whxch showed how we have borrowed our holxday tradxtxons from forexgn countnes Miss Neva Durst led her fxrst and second grade group nn a seasonal choral readmg 'I Lxke Wmter concluding wlth a song of the same txtle Mrss Edith Durst had her seventh grade gwe a choral readlng 'The Flrst Chrxstrnas Eve ' under the leadershrp of Roger Bxlstem Her exghth grade pupxls presented a clever Chnstmas play Mass Hendr1ckson's hfth and sxxth graders gave a fxttmg conclusxon to the program with the1r Natwxty Pageant, which told the story of Chr1st's brrth ln song and scripture As the audlence slowly left the bunldmg, all of the grade puplls sang carols xn the followed the program each teacher held a party and provided special Christmas treats for puprls and parents Another event on the grade school calendar whxch IS hxghly antrclpated by the publlc rs thelr Achievement Day held the last week rn Apnl each year Pupils from all schools in Grant County compete m spellmg and arxthmetrc contests under the dlrectlon of the County Supermtendent of Schools In Aprll of 1950 the following grade pupils of our school won nbbons ua oral spelhng Johnny Thurston Judy Evert Karen Martin Kay Hayward Lesley Hungerford, Roger Bllsteln .hm Martm and Gene Rothwell Wmners ln wrxtten spelling mcluded Mary Louelsnncoln Margaret Howell Sharlene Hayward Karen Martm, Kay Hayward Roger Bxlstexn Kleo Evert Charles Warner and Gene Rothwell Wmners m the arxthmetzc con tests were Sharon Thomas Lyle Burton Kleo Evert Kay Monahan Gene Rothwell and .Tack Crumroy ln May of 1950 a Sandhills Jumor Olympic was held at Mullen with 83 grade pupxls from exght schools competmg Mr Sommers who was an charge of the Hyannis boys was proud of thezr wmnmg the second place trophy rn track Wumers of events zncluded Bobby Bowen Don Haney Dean Haney Joe Weakly Lyle Burton and hm Martm The same afternoon spellmg and music sectwns were held as a Sandhxll Achzevement Day Mlss Ed Durst and M1ss Harms entered pupxls from thexr respectwe grades Puprls of Mrs Wolf's musxc class who won rxbbons m the musxc sectxon were Sharon Thomas Kay Monahan Marxanne Castle Kleo Evert Sharlene Hayward Nlarcxe Moran Sandra Castle Roger Bxlstem and Gene Rothwell Spellmg honors were won by Karen Martm Johnny Thurston, Judy Evert Roger Bllstem and Gene Rothwell Two grade act1v1t1es which provmde a splendxd trauung ground for our hugh school are the .Tumor Pep Club sponsored by Mxss Edzth Durst and the Grade Boys' Basketball coached by Mr Powell We are all proud of your acluevements tlns year ln conclusxon we congratulate the grades and then' mstructors on the past honors they have won and we extend our best wxshes for your contmued progress and success Loxs Carson Reporter 26 . , . . .
