.H gl: gfymg Claris Jffulory ln the fall of 1946 a small green plane came to land at the axrport of the Umte d Au llnes of Hyannxs Hxgh School After passmg rxgzd mental tests and a gruellmg xmuatzon by crews of upper planes we mne t1m1d passengers were permxtted to board thms Freshman plane as the Class of 1950 and to begm our basxc trammg wxth Mlss Farley as our fhght commander We carr1ed l1ttle baggage except our warxed xnherent talents We elected the followmg crew members Ron Anderson pxlot Tocn Stroud co pxlot Darrell Metcalf radlo operator and Delores McCra5 navxgator The same cr ew membm rs served four years exchangmg the1r posxtxons occasxonally to prevent combat fatlgue Fur of our passengers who baxled out before the fxrst year ended made safe landxngs Be n l..1ncoln at Whltman A1rport Lo1s Gorsuch V1ola Gorsuch and lola Reeves at Mullen and Marlln Harman m the Mar1ne Corps We d1dn t fly very hxgh that year howeu 1 we took all the tra1nees on two pleasure flights and made oursclwes xndlspenslble around the school hangar After many ups and downs we were transferred to a larger plane the Sophomore uhxch was equlpped for rougher travel Only the four crew membz rs were on board wxth Robe rt Evans as our new flxght commander We concentrated on physlcal dcxelopment and be cam. members of the famous Longhorns Vxctorxes over all opponents won for us a u ry sp: cxal mxsslon to the State Basketball Tournament at Llncoln Although we dad not wm our battle the fhght was a successful leconnaxsance Upon our return home we were honored by our parents at a basketball banquet at Hotel Hyanms m recogmtlon of our prowess We flew an emergency mlssxon 1n Apr 11 when the Senxor Plane of 48 sent an S O S requestlng help ln delwerlng a commercxal cargo Hxlarzty House for fxnancxal gam fmal rztes In the fall of 1948 we buzzed rlght along 1nto our thxrd year of traxmng aboard the Jumor Plane whlch took us to new hexghts We elected our only gxrl cr ew member Delou McCray as pxlot and Mrs Nlck Hayward as flxght commands r Our fxrst flight was a commercial run Mxsslon Funny Brats was accomphshed and proved so rf mum rauu that we 1nv1ted all the Planes and fllght lnstructors to Joxn us on a joy r1de Ou 1 st fllm Westward Whoa bunco blngo square dancmg and eatmg chow provxded the evenlng s entertalnment In December we were thrilled by our fn st landlng ln the new town Communlty Buxldxng Low ce1l1ng and ze o v1s1b1l1ty grounded us for the first t1me from January 3 to 5 when the Blg Blxzzard of 49 made weather history We contmued hard physical traxmng m addition to our mental work and became helpful props of the Longhorn shmp Our pxlot was honored as one of our cheerleaders Our second reconnalsance of the Lmcoln State Tourn ament and another banquet held m our honor were ample rewards for our strxct traxmng We were the flrst Plane to be offered the excellent cltzzenshxp experxence of Boys and Glrls County Government Day sponsored by the Amerxcan Legion and xts Auvnlnary An addltlonal honor ame to our co pllot Darrell Metcalf who was awarded a solo fllght to Boys State at Lxncoln ln June Near the close of our tlurd year we gate a farewell Q nts rtalnme nt to honor the be mor Plane of 1949 ln commemoratxon of the Gold Rush a Fozty Nxnc r tha me was usa d Followlng a banquet at Hotel Hyanms a prom was held at the school hangar vxhe re a lxlm 14 S I O O L I 1 ' I ' - - : 1 .
