Atkinson we gratefully dedicate THE LANTERN, which they lighted for us last year when they became the directors of our school and which they have kept burning for us this year. Not only will the light of their understanding and counsel guide us through the years, but the glow of THE LANTERN will remind us of the happy experiences and accomplishments acquired under their super- vision. Like us, both Dr. and Mrs. A., as they' affectionately are called, are graduates of private schools. Dr. A. graduated from Castle Heights, Lebanon, Tennessee, and Mrs. A. graduated from Peabody Demonstra- tion School, Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. A. received his master of arts degree from Columbia University, New York, and his degree of doctor of philosophy from Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee, Mrs. A. attended Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from Southwestern, where Dr. A. has been a professor of psychology for twenty-five years. He is still connected with Southwestern and is head of the Psychological Service Center. The rays of light from THE LANTERN that they now hold for us will become stronger and more steady as we grow in appreciation and recognition of their broadening influence. May this be a record of esteem for our directors and pride in our school. y . S. f . - ARC? 4, wav , S S X 1 , 1 I 3 f Q 1 ? S V I ...... Q L 'I 1' H -lllll A W: vvvlll .... Of course, everyone signed up for English under either Mrs. Polk or Mrs. Hampton. Since the first day of school everyone has been writing themes and book reports or studying literature and grammar. From city government to federal, from Ancient History to Modern, Miss Mc- Intosh covered the field. Many took Civics, which was offered for the first time, while the ninth grade learned of Greece and Rome, the eleventh of the Hanovers and the Hapsburghs, and the seniors of America. As for Latin it might be called the survival of the fittest, for after two years who are left but the fittest! We could always rely on Miss Hoyt, however, to help us over the rough spots. Biology and General Science attracted not only students but numerous plants, butterflies, insects, and snakes as well to its classes. Miss Jameson added interest by showing movies on the current topic. Mrs. Mathis guided us through Spanish and French grammar, vocabulary, and translations while Mrs. Webster improved our French accent and helped us to be- come more facile in conversational French. From Plane to Solid Geometry Mr. Hicks, our new mathematics teacher, ex- plained the curves and angles as well as algebraic equations. Many added typing, taught by Mrs. Parker, or Home Economics, supervised by Mrs. Reid, to their cur- riculum. All were required to register for Physical Education under Mrs. Cunning- ham, also a new teacher who has increased school spirit by promoting inter school basketball games. Dr. and Mrs. Atkinson have advised us well and lent us a guiding hand in our courses of study. We have had a profitable, successful, and a happy year. Hlgoolcs that you may carry to the fire and readilv in your lwancl are the most useful after all.H -v,IOl'lHSOI'l av' 49 Q2 A.. .. .2.Q 1VQ . : M Q wg N V Eiilif 55 , 3 f X. QlRQANlZfklflQNS Our organizations join hands with our classes to vitalize them and to give us the practice to carry out the principles that we learn. The Student Council, as the coordinating organization of the school, has operated smoothly and effectively as a result of its careful planning in a workshop held two weeks before the beginning of school in Maywood, Mississippi. Among the many responsibilities and projects of the Council are the assigning of a big sister to each new girl, the chapel programs, and the support of a war orphan. Our chapter took part in the program at the organizitional meeting of the state association in Nashville, and our school was chosen to be one of the six representatives at the national conference in Washington. Cur presi- dent, Ginny Sloan, served as our delegate. This fall four girls, Ginny Sloan, Carol Lewis, Nancy Greenlese, and Mary Ann Wade with their sponsor, attended the Southern As- sociation of Student Councils in Mobile, Alabama. We also participated in a state pro- gram at Kingsport in April. The Council is already looking ahead to next year with plans for a city-wide council and a new constitution. The National Honor Society is active in upholding its standards: scholarship, lead- ership, character, and service. It holds a fall and spring initiation every year. This spring Nancy Greenlesc, Jessica Barton, and Trudy Johnson were tapped. The society sponsors a musical festival every spring. Our publications consist of a newspaper, which appears monthly, and a yearbook. The Signpost published its first issue in September. It has given many girls an oppor- tunity to develop further their abilities in writing, organization, and art, and it has added interest irrlschool activities. The Lantern, we hope, speaks for itself. This is the second year of its publication, the first received an honor rating from the National Press As- sociation. Betty Jo Godwin, Trudy Johnson, Cynthia Rau, and Sally Hampton, with their adviser, attended the annual convention of the Southern Interscholastic Press As- sociation at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, in April. In recogni- tion of the distinctive work of certain staff members of both publications, a chapter of Quill and Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, was formed. It is named for Mr. Frank Ahlgren, the editor of The Commercial Appeal. The Spanish and French Clubs aim toward mastery of conversational French or Spanish. Many members corresponded with Spanish or French girls. At the meetings we played games and also enjoyed several movies. Each club presented plays. The Glee Club not only stressed voice development but also music appreciation. The highlight of the Glee Club occurs at Commencement Exercises. The Athletic Association has carried on the spirit of friendly rivalry between the Black and the Gold Teams. At the beginning of the year the eighth grade and the new girls were chosen by one or the other team. Games have been played between the two teams, and a school basketball team was organized to play other schools. We played Lausanne and St. Agnes here, and we played the team at the Girls' Preparatory School both in Chattanooga and here with winning scores both times. The Red Cross Chapter has been busy throughout the year, collecting playing cards and ash trays, making favors for every holiday for Kennedy Hospital, packing and mailing overseas boxes, giving an Easter party for the children at John Gaston Hospital, and ending the year with a flower party at the Kennedy General Hospital. The Science Club is newly organized this year. It has had a varied program, discus- sing, listening to lectures, and participating in such topics as conservation, cancer, atomic energy, nature study, and observation of the stars. We feel that we have spent a successful year. Page Fifty-Se zfen Page Fifty-Eight FEATURES Hand in hand the new girls went with their big sisters to the coke party given for them by the Student Council during the first week of school. The new barbecue pit and shed in the rear of the main building helped to make the Student Council Hallowe'en Party even better. ' ' l V The Black and Gold team activities began with' a scavenger hunt, hostessed by the Gold Team in payment for having less points the previous year than the Black Team. Then came games played between the two teams, the scores ran so close that for further excitement both teams challenged the faculty to a volleyball game. Need- less to say our hands, for once, proved stronger than the hands of those who guide us. At Christmas we had special entertainments. The French Club gave a program, and the eighth grade French class presented a play. A group from the Glee Club formed a Christmas Choir and sang for us as well as for other schools and organiza- tions. The fourth grade gave two plays, which we and our parents enjoyed very much. The freshman class had a dinner dance at the University Club. Later the Spanish Club presented two plays. Martha Folk was selected as duchess and Mary Budd Bodine served as her lady- in-waiting, representing our school in the Cotton Carnival. The Chattanooga trip highlighted the season in athletics for it not only proved that Hutchison girls have good sportsmanship but excellent spirit. In March the Girls, Preparatory School played a return game in Memphis. After the game their team and their supporters were entertained with our tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades with a super dance given by Dr. and Mrs. Atkinson. That was biggest social event of the year. The Atkinsons also gave a series of teas for our parents. Field Day climaxed the sports events for the year. As ever Black and Gold com- petition ran high in badminton, hurdles, baseball, relays, a sack race, and a three-leg- ged race. The flag raising as usual proved to be an inspiring ceremony. Even in recalling the beauty of the court and the dances of 1948, we think that the magnificence of our May Festival cannot be approached. Strolling down a Garden Lanel' is the theme carried out in the costumes of the different grades. Billie Fisher, our beautiful May Queen, attended by Ruth May Pidgeon and Laurence Mitchell, will be a picture that we shall always remember. As we hold a mirror to the Commencement Exercises of the Class of 1948, we see the reflection of our own graduation glorified as we walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas. Then we visualize the end of the impressive ceremony, and we are walking up the aisle, now with our flowers in one hand and our diploma in the other hand, looking for new worlds to conquer. uRe'oiee lest leasureless ve die. .l P J Within a little time must ye go hy Stretch forth your open hands and while ye live Take all the gifts that Death and Life may give? -William lllmis ev' 152: G R -.M- ? 5 3352? fl? The classes consist of arithmetic, English, reading, spelling, geography, and history, with French for those who want to take it. All who love sports look forward to the physical education classes. Two captains in each grade choose their teams, which play each other in softball, basketball, kickball, volleyball, and many other thrilling games. Each team does its best and hopes that it will win at the Field Day held near the end of the year. We also learn dances for the May Day Festival. In our music lessons, twice a week, we sing many popular songs and listen to many records in preparation for the high school glee clubs. In art classes many of the girls use water-color paints while others make crayon, charcoal, or chalk drawings. The Student Council consists of a president, vice president, and secretary. A meeting is held every Monday at which committees are appointed, business is discussed, and rules are set. The girls who follow the rules receive a star each week. At the end of the year the girl who has the most stars wins a prize. Once a week we have a story hour, current events and Bible reading. Our Red Cross chapter meets once a month. In each program the girls participate under the guidance of our teachers. This year we have had also many educational movies, which have been entertaining as well as helpful. We are a happy and congenial group in the Intermediate Department, working with our teachers and each other towards a better and a fuller life in the future. In the Primary Department, grades one through four, we have many and varied inter- ests. Programs about health and safety and movies on these subjects have made us aware of their importance. In addition to our regular subjects of reading, writing, English, arithmetic, geography, spelling, and science, we have art, dancing, and singing. We have enjoyed many records of stories and songs. We are learning to sing by note and in parts. Junior Red Cross offers an opportunity for service. We are learning that we can find happiness in serving others. With our officers leading us we have filled overseas gift boxes, made tray favors, and collected vases, playing cards, and funny books for the hospitals. Through our Student Committee whose function it is to guide us in fair play, team work, and cooperation with both teachers and classmates, we are learning to take responsibility in school affairs. We have had our parties, too-one for new students at the beginning of the year, another at Christmas and a grand one on Valentine's Day. Informal dramatics are an important and enjoyable part of our school day. We often dramatize stories and prepare programs for our assembly time. At Christmas the fourth grade gave two plays in Study Hall. This was a big event of the year for us. Visual education is a great aid to learning. Our new View-lex projector for film strips as well as the movie projector have been much in use in our department. In the Primary Department character training goes hand in hand with scholastic work. To develop right thinking basically honest individuals is the purpose of all our activities. To do my best is each child's guiding principle. By becoming good school citizens today, we hope to be better world citizens of tomorrow.
