7:30 A.M.-The empty Quadrangle stands ready to receive 1300 energetic students. if le Although the new high school building is an impressive structure, the vivucious but serious-minclecl students are more impressive still. with stone and steel,. . . . . . Contractors created on an empgi plain a modern and beautyful edmce. They made it inanimate. It couldn't move or speak or produce. But when it's yhlled with livey, youthful students busihi going about the business of learning and enjoying themselves, it has as much lje as any structure on earth. lfVithin this building, an amazing process occurs. Each year droves KUF wide-eyed, timid youths enter it hr the first time,' three years later thgi emerge young adults, stilljull qffun, but ready to meet whatever challenges lyfe may offer in a troubled world.

.jf- Kids say the darn'dest things! might be Mr. Knauer's thoughts as he responds with mixed emotions to a students comment during an early morning class discussion. cleclicaiee stajjf selects personable english teacher as 1962 dI6Cl'Z'CCll66 Perched precariously on his stool in room A-200, Mr. Del Knauer imparts to his stu- dents his love of literature and zeal for learn- ing. His vitality doesn't end in the class- roomg it bubbles over into Briny Birds and the Midnight Oil Burners, clubs of which he is sponsor. Mr. Knauer can be a friend to the students as well as a teacher, because the years have not made him forget what it is to be young. Although he sympathizes with the students, he does not 'give away good grades. He is not content with mediocrity and requires quality work. His students attack his assign- ments with enthusiasm, for under him Eng- lish becomes meaningful and its study be- comes a pleasure. It is with great pride that the 1962 Alla- garoo staff dedicates the fruit of its year's labor to Mr. Del Knauer.
